  • Fundamental parameters describing overall operational characteristics of active cooling systems of a hypersonic flight vehicle are mainly classified into endothermic hydrocarbon fuels, regenerative cooling channels, and materials and system structures. Of primary importance is the improvement of endothermic performance of hydrocarbon aviation fuels in a series of studies developing efficient regenerative cooling systems. In a previous study, therefore, an extensive technical analysis has been carried out on thermal decomposition characteristics of liquid hydrocarbon fuels. As a subsequent study, catalytic cracking and steam reforming technologies have been reviewed to find a way for the improvement of endothermic reaction performance of hydrocarbon aviation fuels.

  • In this study, conceptual design of the RBCC (Rocket Based Combined Cycle) engine was performed for the hypersonic propulsion system development. For the flight mission, RBCC engine takes off at sea level and accelerates up to Mach 8 at the altitude of 30km. By the flight speed characteristics, operating pattern of the engine is categorized into 3 modes : Ejector jet (~Mach 3), Ramjet (Mach 3~6), Scramjet (Mach 6~8). According to the engine mode characteristics, RBCC engine design and analysis was performed.

  • The aerothermodynamic characteristics of SCRamjet engine for the airbreathing populsion system of the next generation flight vehicle are described. As the flow is passing by, combustion caused the total pressure loss and the Mach number decrease, but nozzle exit velocity is large enough to produce net thrust. To simulate supersonic combustion test, preliminary design of ground-based blowdown type supersonic combustion tunnel is attained. Minimum allowable operating pressure and mass flow rate are calculated for the design Mach number of 2.5 at the test section of a supersonic combustion tunnel.

  • This paper describes development status and program of ATREX engine as a propulsion system of future spaceplane. Development activities using ATREX-500 engine from 1990 were finished in 2003 with large number of outcomes. We made system-level validation of the hydrogen fuel turbojet engine with air precooling device under sea level static condition. As a next step, we started design of the flight-type ATREX engine with large thrust and lightweight.

  • Recently, plasma injection has been suggested as a means to enhance and control combustion rates of propellant materials. It is also of interest for applications in fields such as rocket propulsion, electrothermal-chemical (ETC) launchers, and hypersonic mass acceleration technology. In order to characterize the plasma fundamental measurements such as the plasma excitation temperature and electron number density are essential. (omitted)

  • DARPA's hypersonic propulsion program VULCAN is aimed for development of Mach 4+ capable engine by combining current production turbofan engine such as F119 with CVC (Constant Volume Combustion) engine. Final goal is a TBCC(Turbo-based Combined Cycle) engine by combining with dual mode ramjet/scramjet engine. CVC is a common designation of new concept of high efficiency engines, such as Pulse Detonation Engine (PDE) or Continuous Detonation Engine (CDE), which use the detonation as a combustion mechanism. Present paper introduces the internationally collaborative research activities carried out in Aerospace Combustion and Propulsion Laboratory of the department of Aerospace Engineering of the Pusan national University.

  • K-$\omega$ model is used for simulation of flowfield around the cylinderical afterbody. In addition to two-equation turbulence model, modification terms for the compressibility effects are applied to the simulation. Although the estimations of the skin friction and the surface pressure distribution at hypersonic ramp flowfield were satisfactory, the result of the simulation with the modifications for this flowfield is worse than that of the original K-$\omega$ model. The compressiblility modification terms do negative effects on the estimation. The basic research on the turbulence model for the compressible flowfield has to be further conducted.

  • Korea Aerospace Research Institute started on design and development of a hypersonic air-breathing engine test facility from 2000 and completed the test facility installation in July 2009. This facility, designated as Scramjet engine test facility(SeTF), is a blow-down type high enthalpy wind tunnel which has a pressurized air supply system, air heater system, free-jet test chamber, fuel supply system, facility control/measurement system and exhaust system. In this paper, details of the specifications, and configuration of the SeTF are described. For verifying characteristics of the SeTF, wind tunnel tests are now on progress and some of the data are also described.

  • Hypersonic aircraft technologies have been developed with increase in flight speeds. As hypersonic flight speeds increase, heat loads on an aircraft and it's engine increase. Researches on cooling technologies using endothermic fuels are progressing in the USA, France, and Russia to treat the heat loads. Endothermic fuels are liquid hydrocarbon aircraft fuels which are able to absorb the heat loads by undergoing endothermic reactions, such as thermal and catalytic cracking. In this study, methylcyclohexane, n-octane, and n-dodecane were selected as model endothermic fuels and experiments in endothermic properties were implemented. Experimental conditions were supercritical phase of each model fuels in which actual endothermic fuels were exposed. The object of this study is to identify endothermic properties of the model endothermic fuels and to predict endothermic properties of actual fuels such as kerosene fuels.

  • Supersonic/Hypersonic wind tunnel is a facility which is intended to test and to observe the physical phenomena around a model by creating supersonic flow in the test section. In designing an airplane, the wind tunnel test is demanded to analyzing aerodynamic characteristics of the model without making a prototype. In this research, the model aerodynamic facility(MAF) is modified for the purpose of increasing running time and its functionality. New pneumatic valves for remote control was installed for safety requirement, and new air tanks was installed on MAF as well. A pipe system is also modified to use those new valves and tanks, and the ceiling and side glasses of the test section are switched to ones with the larger surface area. After the MAF modification, a test is performed at Mach 2, 3 and 4. In this test, shadow graph technique, one of the flow visualization methods, is used to visualize supersonic flow field. The pressure in the settling chamber and working section at Mach 2, 3 and 4 was measured in each case. As a result, the possible model size and running time are obtained.
