  • Objective : Ssanggang-tang(SGT) is noted as an effective method to treat hyperlipidemia in China. The main purpose of this study was analysis of the effects of Ssanggang-tang(SGT) on rats induced with caused hyperlipidemia. Methods : We observed 3 experimental groups: normal, control, and SGT. Rats were provided a normal diet in the normal group, and the other groups were provided a hyperlipidemic diet to induce hyperlipidemia. After 2 weeks, SGT was treated in the SGT group. For 6 weeks, values related to hyperlipidemia were observed in the 3 experimental groups. Results : SGT decreased some values related to hyperlipidemia like total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL cholesterol), triglyceride, acetocoenzyme A acetyltransferase(ACAT), and 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase(HMG-CoA reductase). However, it showed no effect on weight change or high density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL cholesterol). Conclusion : These results suggest that SGT might be effective in treatment and prevention of hyperlipidemia.

  • Objectives : This study was performed to investigate the effect of water extracts from Phyllostachys Folium(PF) on hyperlipiderma and liver damage induced by alcohol. Methods : Except for the normal group, we fed rat on 25% alcohol for 55 days. And extract was administrated for the same period. We measured the serum component in rat's blood, body weight and weight of liver. Results : At first, we observed effects of PF on hyperlipidemia induced by alcohol. PF group didn't show significant change of total cholesterol in comparison with those of the control group. PF group showed significant increase of HDL(High-Density lipoprotein) cholesterol in comparison with those of the control group. PF group showed significant decrease of triglyceride in comparison with those of the control group. PF group showed significant increase of body weight in comparison with those of the control group at 4weeks and 8weeks. At second, I observed effects of PF group on liver damage induced by alcohol. PF group showed significant decrease of GOT, GPT, ALP and LDH in comparison with those of the control group. PF group showed significant increase of liver weight in comparison with those of the control group. Conclusions : Reviewing these experimental results, it appears that water extracts from Phyllostachys Folium(PF) have pharmaceutical efficacy on hyperlipidemia and liver damage induced by alcohol. Therefore further additional study should be conducted to elucidate in depth the pharmaceutical efficacy of these.

  • Objectives : Polygoni Multiflori Radix (Jeokhasuo in Korean) is a Oriental traditional herbs widely used in East Asian countries. Overconsumption of fructose results in hypertension, dyslipidemia, obesity and impaired glucose tolerance which have documented as a risk of cardiovascular diseases. This experimental study was designed to investigate the beneficial effects of an ethanol extract from Polygoni Multiflori Radix (PMR) in high-fructose (HF) diet-induced metabolic syndrome rat model. Methods : Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were divided into three groups; Control group, receiving regular diet and tap water, HF group, and HF + PMR group both receiving supplemented with 65% fructose (n=10), respectively. The HF + PMR group initially received HF diet with PMR (100 mg/kg/day) for 8 weeks. Results : PMR significantly prevented the metabolic disturbances such as hyperlipidemia, hypertension and impaired glucose tolerance. Chronic treatment with PMR significantly decreased body weight, fat weight and adipocyte size, suggesting a role of anti-obesity effect. PMR led to improve the hyperlipidemia through the increase in HDL cholesterol level as well as the decrease in triglyceride and LDL cholesterol level. In addition, PMR suppressed adhesion molecules and endothelin-1 (ET-1) expression in aorta resulting in the decrease of hypertension. In muscle tissue, PMR significantly recovered the HF-induced insulin resistance through increase of insulin receptor substrate-1 (IRS-1), p-$AMPK{\alpha}1/2$, and p-Akt expression. PMR improved HF-induced metabolic disorders and its action was caused by energy metabolism-mediated insulin signaling activation. Conclusions : These results demonstrate that PMR may be a beneficial therapeutic for metabolic syndrome through the improvement of hyperlipidemia, obesity, insulin resistance and hypertension.

  • To compare the efficacy of Stephaniae Tetrandrae Rhizoma and Sinomenii Caulis which are medicinal plants used as Bang Kee(防己), the plants were combined with Astragali Radix and Lycopii Herba into 6 different medicinal decoctions. The specimen decoctions prepared were each decoctions of Stephaniae Tetrandrae Rhizoma(St), Sinomenii Caulis(Si), Stephaniae Tetrandrae Rhizoma-Astragali Radix(StA), Stephaniae Tetrandrae Rhizoma-Lycopii Herba(StL), Sinomenii Caulis-Astragali Radix(SiA) and Sinomenii Caulis-Lycopii Herba(SiL). They were dosed to rats with induced hyperlipidemia. In the groups of rats with hyperlipidemia induced by high cholesterol diet, in the group which St was dosed to, there was no significant effect on the level of Tc, TG, HDLc. And in the group which Si was dosed to, the level of Tc, TG dropped and that of HDLc rose. In the groups of rats with hyperlipidemia induced by high cholesterol diet, in the group which StA was dosed to, there was no significant change in the level of Tc, TG, or HDLc. But in the group which SiA was dosed to, the level of Tc and TG dropped and that of HDLc rose. In the groups of rats with hyperlipidemia induced by high cholesterol diet, in the group which StL was dosed to, the level of TG dropped, but there was no significant change in the level of Tc or HDLc. And in the SiL group, there was no significant change in the level of Tc or TG, but the level of HDLc rose. On diseases such as hyperlipidemia, when using drug couple of Bang Kee-Astragali Radix as a treatment, Sinomenii Caulis is recommended rather than Stephaniae Tetrandrae Rhizoma, and when using drug couple of Bang Kee-Lycopii Herba as a treatment, Sinomenii Caulis and Stephaniae Tetrandrae Rhizoma neither showed significant effect. And as Lycopii Herba interrupts the effect of Sinomenii Caulis, drug couple of Sinomenii Caulis-Lycopii Herba is not recommended.

  • To examine the effect of Codium fragile on blood cholesterol and lipid metabolism, hyperlipidemia was induced in experimental animal rats through the administration of a hypercholesterolemic diet. Codium fragile powder was then administered to the rats for 5 weeks, after which, blood biochemical changes such as blood cholesterol, Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST: serum SGOT) and Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT: serum SGPT) enzyme activity, etc. were determined. And histological changes in liver cells were examined using an electron microscope. Codium fragile treatment resulted in a significant reduction of the levels of total cholesterol, blood triglyceride and low-density cholesterol (LDL. Chol) compared to the control rats. In contrast the expression levels of high-density cholesterol (HDL. chol.) were increased. The AST value of the Codium fragile administration group was significantly reduced and the blood ALT value of the Codium fragile group showed a significant decrease in comparison to the negative control group. In summary, this study demonstrated the beneficial possibilities of Codium fragile in improving the abnormality of lipid metabolism caused by liver cell damage and hyperlipidemia.
