  • Recently, micro hydropower attracts attention because of its clean, renewable and abundant energy resources to develop. However, suitable turbine type is not normalized yet in the range of micro hydropower and it is necessary to study for the effective turbine type. Moreover, relatively high manufacturing cost by the complex structure of the turbine is the highest barrier for developing the micro hydropower turbine. Therefore, a cross-flow turbine is proposed for micro-hydropower in this study because of its simple structure and high possibility of applying to low head. The purpose of this study is to further simplify the turbine structure and improve the performance, A guide vane is removed and the runner chamber is made compact using a new air supply method. • Recently, small hydropower attracts attention because of its renewable, clean and abundant energy resources to develop. Therefore, a tubular type hydro turbine is proposed for small hydropower in this study because the turbine has relatively simple structure and high possibility of applying to small hydropower. The purpose of this study is to investigate the performance characteristics of the turbine by field test. Field test iss conducted using one tubular turbine system as well as serial arrangement system by two tubular turbines taking into consideration of actual operation conditions. The results show that efficiency of test turbine changes considerably by the runner vane angle. Best efficiency of one turbine arrangement is higher than that of two turbine serial arrangement.

  • Recently, small hydropower attracts attention because of its clean, renewable and abundant energy resources to develop. However, suitable turbine type is not determined yet in the range of small hydropower and it is necessary to study for the effective turbine type. Moreover, relatively high manufacturing cost by the complex structure of the turbine is the highest barrier for developing the small hydropower turbine. Therefore, a cross-flow turbine is adopted because of its simple structure and high possibility of applying to small hydropower. The purpose of this study is to examine the optimum configuration of nozzle shape to further optimize the cross-flow hydraulic turbine structure and to improve the performance. The results show that pressure on the runner blade in Stage 1 and velocity at nozzle outlet have close relation to the turbine performance.

  • Currently in Korea, the lack of facilities and technical criteria for the performance test of small hydropower degrades the efficiency of the domestic small hydropower turbine, and makes it difficult to objectively evaluate the performance of hydro turbine. Therefore Korean institute of water and environment in K-water planned making a basis of performance test of small hydropower by using our flowmeter calibration system the largest one in Korea. We planned the maximum measurable power of hydro turbine will be 200 kW in our system. Improving the efficiency of small hydropower system can achieve the additional development benefit about 1.5 billion won per year.

Hydraulic turbine power plants operating at appointed load shall be operate stable in terms of pressure, discharge, rotational speed and torque. A performance guarantees for hydro turbines shall be contain, as a minimum, guarantees covering power, discharge and specific hydraulic energy, efficiency, maximum momentary overspeed and maximum momentary pressure and maximum steady-state runaway speed, as well as guarantees related to cavitation. But, present in Korea, the absence of testing laboratories and technical criteria for the performance test of small hydropower degrades the efficiency of the domestic hydropower machines, and makes it difficult to objectively evaluate the performance of hydro turbine. • Small hydropower is a reliable energy technology to be considered for providing clean electricity generation. Producing electrical energy by small hydropower is the most efficient contribution to renewable energy. Cross-flow turbine is adopted primarily because of its simple structure and high possibility of applying to small hydropower. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of inlet nozzle shape on the performance and internal flow of a cross-flow turbine for small hydropower by CFD analysis. Moreover, the shape effect of draft tube has been investigated according to modified shapes of the length and the diffuse angle. The results show that relatively narrow and converging inlet nozzle shape gives better effect on the performance of the turbine.

  • For the case of high head and critical low flow rate range of micro hydropower resources, it requires very low specific speed turbines which are lower than conventional impulse turbine's specific speed. In order to satisfy the request for very low specific speed turbine with high efficiency, a new positive displacement turbine is developed. The performance characteristics of the new turbine is tested and compared with a conventional impulse turbine, which is used for automatic water faucet system. The purpose of present study is to develop an high performance turbine that can be used to extract micro hydropower potential of a water supply system. The test results show that the positive displacement turbine is much more efficient than the conventional turbine and it can sustain high efficiency under the wide range of operating conditions. The pressure pulsations at the inlet and outlet of the positive displacement turbine can be considerably minimized by using simple pressure damper.
