UV-curable hydrophilic coating solutions were prepared by mixing colloidal silica dispersed in alcohol with an acrylic monomer, pentaerythritol triacrylate (PETA). Hydrophilic coating films were also prepared by spin coating the hydrophilic coating solutions on PC substrates and UV curing for 10 minutes subsequently. The effect of the amount of colloidal silica in the coating solutions, which was varied from 10 g to 50 g, was investigated on the hydrophilic properties of UV-cured coating films. The results showed that the amount of colloidal silica had a great influence on the hydrophilic properties of UV-cured coating films and the coating film prepared with 30 g of colloidal silica showed a lowest contact angle of $37^{\circ}$ and an excellent pencil hardness of H.
Hydrophilic coating solutions were prepared by reacting a silane coupling agent, aminosilane with colloidal silica (15~20 nm in diameter). Hydrophilic coating films were also obtained by depositing the hydrophilic coating solutions on polycarbonate substrates by dip-coating and subsequently by thermal curing at $120^{\circ}C$. During this process, the effect of types of aminosilane was studied on the properties of coating films. As a result, coating films, prepared with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) as aminosilane, showed contact angles of $25{\sim}44^{\circ}$ and a poor pencil hardness of B. On the other hand, coating films, prepared with 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APTMS) as aminosilane, exhibited contact angles of $26{\sim}37^{\circ}$ and a good pencil hardness of 2H.
Hydrophilic coating solutions were prepared by reacting a silane coupling agent, GPTMS (3-glycidoxypropyl trimethoxysilane) with colloidal silica. Hydrophilic coating films were also obtained by depositing the hydrophilic coating solutions on polycarbonate substrates by spin-coating and subsequently by thermal curing at $120^{\circ}C$. During this process, the effect of average particle sizes of colloidal silica was studied on the properties of coating films. As a result, coating film, prepared from colloidal silica with average particle size of 25 nm, showed a low contact angle of $20^{\circ}$ and a good pencil hardness of H. On the other hand, coating films, prepared from colloidal silica with average particle sizes of 15 nm and 45 nm, exhibited high contact angles of $27^{\circ}$ and $36^{\circ}$ and pencil hardness of H and B, respectively.
In order to improve the hydrophilic property of polymer films, coating solutions which showed a good hydrophilic property, were prepared by the sol-gel method. The coating solutions were prepared by adding different types of silane coupling agents (aminosilane, epoxysilane and acrylsilane) to a colloidal silica (15 nm diameter). The solutions prepared by adding aminosilane resulted in gels which could not be used as coating solutions. On the other hand, the coating solutions prepared by the addition of epoxysilane showed contact angles of $10{\sim}15^{\circ}$ and good hydrophilic property at R=0.10~0.15 (R=silane coupling agent/colloidal silica weight ratio). In addition, the coating solutions prepared by the addition of acrylsilane at R=0.03~0.07, exhibited contact angles of $5{\sim}10^{\circ}$, which means better hydrophilic property than aminosilane or epoxysilane.
A $ZrO_2$ coating solution containing $ZrO_2$ photo-catalysis, which is transparent in visible light, was prepared by the hydrolysis of alkoxide, and thin films on the $SiO_2$ glass substrate were formed in a dipcoating method. These thin films were heat-treated at temperatures ranging from $250^{\circ}C-800^{\circ}C$ and their characteristics were subjected to thermal analysis, XRD, spectrometry, SEM, EDS, contact angle measurement, and AFM. Tetragonal $ZrO_2$ phase was found in the thin film heat treated at $450^{\circ}C$, and anatase $TiO_2$ phase was detected in the thin film heat-treated at $600^{\circ}C$ and above. The thickness of the films was approximately 300 nm, and the roughness was 0.66 nm. Thus, the film properties are excellent. The films are super hydrophilic with a contact angle of $4.0^{\circ}$; moreover, they have self-cleaning effect due to the photo catalytic property of anatase $TiO_2$.

In this study, HEMA-based hydrophilic copolymers were synthesized and dielectric constant (K) of the polymer thin films were investigated by change hydroxyl group (-OH) ratio in the polymer chain. The different hydroxyl group ratios were characterized by FT-IR and its thin films were obtained by spin coating. As a result, due to the moisture absorption of the hydrophilic thin film, the dielectric constant has been increased as was expected. The highest dielectric constant (K=4.19, @1MHz) was observed at 40% hydroxyl group ratio among the several polymers.

In the field of material science, the interests and efforts to modify the surface of materials in agreement with the need of usage have been extensively increasing. he modification to improve the wettability of surface is very important is terms of adhesion, printing, etc. It is very difficult to modify metal surface into hydrophilic one. therefore, surfactant coating has been generally used in many cases. However, surfactant has disadvantages such as environmental problem, soluble in water. in this study, hydrophilic polymer films as alternative of surfactant were deposited on metal substrate by DC plasma polymerization. Hydrophilic polymer films deposited by DC plasma show many merits such as good wettability, stone adhesion to substrate, high resistance to most chemicals. Monomer gas and reactive gas were used as source plasma polymerization. Plasma polymerized films were fabricated with process parameters of deposition time, ratio of gas mixture, current, pressure, etc. Effects of these variables on wettability of plasma polymer films will be discussed. With XPS and FT-IR analyses of plasma polymeric films, the relation between wettability and chemical state of polymer films by DC plasma was investigated.

[ $TiO_{2}-solution$ ] was aaded in $SiO_{2}-solution$ by various composition. $SiO_{2}-TiO_{2}$ thin films were obtained by the dip-coating method on the $SiO_{2}$ glass substrates, and then heat-treated at various temperature. Nano-size $TiO_{2}$ particles dispersed $SiO_{2}-TiO_{2}$ films showed absorption peak by quantum size effect at short wavelength region $350{\sim}400nm$, which made them good candidates for non-linear optical materials and photo-catalytic materials. The thickness of $SiO_{2}-TiO_{2}$ films were $300{\sim}430nm$. The contact angle of $SiO_{2}-TiO_{2}$ films for water was $5.3{\sim}47.9^{\circ}$, and therefore it is clear that $SiO_{2}-TiO_{2}$ films have super hydrophilic properties and the self-cleaning effects.

In this paper, we present a novel hydrophilic coating material (Wellture Finetech, Korea) which can be utilized as a coating layer for anti-contamination for electrical and electronic system. The coating material was deposited on 4 inch silicon wafer with several different film thickness. The film thickness was controlled by spin coating speed. After curing of the film, we have scratched by permanent marker to check self-cleaning property of the film. Also we have executed several mechanical tests of the films. As the spin coating speed is increased, the film thickness was thinned from 230 nm to 125 nm. Contact angle of the film was lowered from $30^{\circ}$ to $12^{\circ}$ as the spin coating speed is increased from 700 to 2,500 rpm. On permanent marker scratched film surface coated at 1,000 rpm, we have poured regular city water to investigate self cleaning property of the film. The scratches were gradually separated from the film surface due to super-hydrophilicity of the film. Hardness of spin coated film was 9H measured by ASTM D3363 method. and adhesion of all film was 5B tested by ASTM D3359 method. Also, to get exact hardness value of the film, we have utilized a nano-indenter. As spin speed is increased, the hardness of film was increased from 3 GPa to 5 GPa.

In order to improve the anti-fogging property of polymer films, organic-inorganic hybrid coating solutions which have good hydrophilic property and transmission in the range of visible light were synthesized by the sol-gel method. The coating solutions were prepared by adding glycidoxypropyl trimethoxysilane(GPS) to a colloidal silica(15 nm) suspension(Ludox). GPS as silane coupling agent forms strong bonds to the colloidal silica and surrounding polymer matrix and links two different materials together. Solutions prepared by addition of GPS at the acidic condition resulted in coatings that were less prone to cracking, while those at the basic condition caused coatings with more cracking. These resulted in better hydrophilic property and transmission in the range of visible light for the solution prepared at the acidic condition(pH 2). Compared with coatings under acidic conditions, coatings prepared at basic conditions showed worse hydrophilic property and transmission in the range of visible light.
