  • This study deals with effect of plasma treatment on the properties of unidirectional ligno cellulosic fabric Hildegardia Populofolia (HDP) fabric. Thermal stability of the fabric was determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Thermo gravimetric analysis (DSC). Morphological properties was analyzed by SEM analysis and found that the surface was rough upon plasma treatment which provides good interfacial adhesion with matrix during composite fabrication. Thermal stability and mechanical properties of the plasma treated fabric slightly increases compare to alkali and untreated fabric. It was observed that tensile properties of the fabric increases upon plasma treatment due to the formation of rough surface. SEM analysis indicates formation of rough surface on plasma treatment which helps in increasing the interfacial interaction between the matrix (hydrophobic) and fabric (hydrophilic).

  • An 80 nm thick zinc aluminate thin film was deposited on a glass substrate via radio-frequency (rf) magnetron sputtering and heat treated to analyze changes in the wetting angles due to a surface modification. The thin films were modified from hydrophilic to hydrophobic by a simple thermal treatment. The surface modification from a heat treatment increased the wetting angles up to 111°, which was explained by the relationship with the excess surface area. The wetting angles of the annealed thin films decreased with increasing exposure time under ambient conditions, which was attributed to the oxygen vacancies in the films that were introduced during deposition. The annealed thin films were treated by ionized oxygen via oxygen plasma. After the oxygen plasma treatment, the decreased wetting angles were maintained at ~95° for 11 days.

  • In this report, high-resolution metal electrode patterning is demonstrated by using selective surface treatment and dip casting for low-cost printed electronic applications. On hydrophobic octadecyltrichlorosilane treated $SiO_2$ surface, deep UV irradiation was performed through a patterned quartz photomask to selectively control the surface energy of the $SiO_2$ layer. The deep UV irradiated region becomes hydrophilic and by dipping into Ag nano-ink, Ag patterns were formed on the surface. Using this patterning technique, line patterns and dot arrays having less than $10{\mu}m$ pitch were fabricated.

  • In order to improve dyeability of poly(ethylene terephthalate)(PET) micro filament fabrics, the effect of the prior oxygen low temperature plasma on the subsequent dyeing(deep dyeing, printing) was examined in various conditions. The apparent concentration of dyed PET micro filament fabrics was increased by $O_{2}$plasma treatment. Higher discharge power levels and higher reactor pressure values created more significant effect. The wettability was significantly increased by $O_{2}$ plasma treatment. Therefore, it is predicted that introducing hydrophilic group on the surface of material can improve the apparent concentration of PET micro filament fabrics.

  • Ultra-thin films of poly[2-[4-(9-(10-phenyl)anthracenyl)phenoxy)hexyloxy]]-1,4-phenylenevinyleylene(PAHPV) were prepare-d on the hydrophilic ITO substrate by Langmuir-Blodgett(LB) technique. ${\lambda}_{max}$ in the photoluminescence spectrum of these films was 458nm at the excitation wavelength of 365nm before thermal treatment, which comes from diphenylanthracene side chain of PAHPV. It was also confirmed with UV-Vis spectrometer that ultra-thin LB films of PAHPV precursor polymer were prepared well. After thermal treatment for conjugation of PAHPV precursor polymer, ${\lambda}_{max}$ in the photoluminescence spectrum of these films changed to 365nm, which means that the conjugation of these PAHPV films was completed.

  • This study examined the surface modification characteristics of NBR using sealing in automobile. Surfaces of NBR were modified by RF power Ar plasma treatment. In experiment, pressure, flux, temperature were fixed and RF bias voltage. Treatment time was changed. In friction test, we used PTFE grease. After modification, surfaces of NBR showed many grooves, hydrophilic functional groups, and lipophilic functional groups. As increasing treating voltage and time, the amount of them was increased. And wetting angle and friction coefficient was decreased with increasing treating voltage and time. However, the pattern of changing friction coefficient was not fixed.

  • Helium-oxygen plasma treatments were conducted to modify poly(trimethylene terephthalate) (PIT) and poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) warp knitted fabrics under atmospheric pressure. Lubricant and contamination removals by plasma etching effect were examined by weight loss $(\%)$ measurements and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. Surface oxidation by plasma treatments was revealed by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses, resulting in formation of hydrophilic groups and moisture regain $(\%)$ enhancement. Low-stress mechanical properties (evaluated by Kawabata evaluation system) and bulk properties (air permeability and bust strength) were enhanced by plasma treatment. Increasing interfiber and interyarn frictions might play important roles in enhancing surface property changes by plasma etching effect, and then changing low-stress mechanical properties and bulk properties for both fabrics.

  • A method of functionalization of multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT) at room temperature using dry ozone gas is described. The resulting MWNT were characterized by Fourier transform infrared, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. Combined to these analyses and solubility in liquids, it could be concluded that the dry ozone gas exposure introduces polar functional groups such as carboxylic groups to MWNT similar to acidic modification of MWNT. Particularly, the stable dispersion of MWNT in water after ozone treatment above a critical level could be obtained, implying potential bio-application. The hydrophilic functional groups on the MWNT introduced by ozone oxidation were helpful in improving the interaction with functional groups in PA6 such as $-NH_2$ and -CONH- resulting in improved mechanical properties.

  • The fundamental parameters controlling ink-jet printing liquids are the viscosity and surface energy. The wetting contact angle determines the spread of a liquid drop on the surface and depends on the relative surface energy. The characteristics of silver ink-jet printing were studied with control of surface energy and head temperature. Polyethylene terephthalate(PET) film and Si-wafer(ptype) were used as substrates and atmospheric plasma was treated to control the surface energy. With silver ink, the hydrophilic surface treatment could reduce the radius of droplets due to the hydrophobic nature of silver ink.

  • Surface modification is very efficient and scalable approach to achieve improved membrane performance. We treated Reverse Osmosis Thin Film Composite (TFC RO) membrane with various concentrations of Polyethylene Glycol (PEG), a hydrophilic polymer after activation with sodium hypochlorite. This treatment resulted in an increment of the water flux by 43% and the salt rejection by 2.36% for the 3000 mg/l PEG-treated membrane. Further, these PEG-treated membranes were exposed to a mixture of 3000 mg/l PEG and 1000 mg/l sodium hypochlorite for 1 hour. Further modification of this membrane by PEG and sodium hypochlorite mixture increased the water permeance up to 133% when compared with the virgin TFC RO membrane. We characterized the treated membranes to understand the changes in wettability by contact angle analysis, changes in surface morphology and roughness by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and atomic force microscope (AFM) analysis.
