  • Deformation on shapes of the hydrogen absorption metal in this paper was investigated on hydrogen absorption-desorption cycling. In order to study this problem, the cold rolled palladium plate and the cold extrusion palladium bar as specimens had been used. By using the electrochemical method, the palladium specimens were cyclically hydrogenated in the 0.1 mol H$_2$SO$_4$ electrolyte. As results, it is noted that the thickness of the plate specimen gradually increased in increasing hydrogenation cycles whereas the width and the length decreased. But both the diameter and the length of the bar specimen increased with increasing hydrogenation cycles. Also, grains in the plate specimen were greatly deformed after hydrogenation cycling whereas internal grains in the bar specimen were pulverized. And deterioration of the hydrogen absorption rate of the bar specimen was lager than the plate specimen.

  • Castor oil can be used as a useful raw material for chemical industries such as intermediates of surfactants through hydrogenation reaction. In this study, effects of the preparation method and pretreatment condition on the nickel catalyst for the hydrogenation of castor oil were investigated. The nickel catalyst was supported on the silica carrier by the precipitation method with different Ni contents, solution pH values, and precipitants. Repeated pretreatments of oxidation and reduction cycles were then carried out. The activity of the nickel catalyst was measured by comparing the iodine value of the castor oil. The dispersion of nickel on the catalyst was analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), $N_2$ adsorption-desorption, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The activity of nickel catalyst was also compared by CO oxidation experiments. The redispersion of nickel occurred on the silica by repeated oxidation and reduction cycles, and this effect contributed to promoting the castor oil hydrogenation activity.

  • The effect of pressure cycling of $Zr_{0.9}Ti_{0.1}Cr_{0.7}Fe_{1.3}$ on the hydrogenation properties was investigated using the P-C-Isotherm curves and hydrogen absorption rate curves in the isotherm condition. The reversible hydrogen absorption capacity was decreased about 45 % after 3300 cycles. In the case of activated sample, the rate controlling steps of hydriding reaction changed from the surface reaction to the hydrogen diffusion process through hydride phase sequentially as reaction proceeded. After 3300 cycles, the sequential change of rate controlling step was same as activated one. However, the hydrogen absorption rate significantly decreased. It is suggested that the degradation of $Zr_{0.9}Ti_{0.1}Cr_{0.7}Fe_{1.3}$ can be interpreted with the formation of $ZrFe_3$ phase at the particle surface.

  • Ti-Cr alloys consist of BCC solid solution, C36, C14 and C15 Laves phase at high temperature. Among others, the BCC solid solution phase was reported to have a high hydrogen storage capacity. However, activation, wide range of hysteresis at hydrogenation/dehydrogenation, and degradation of hydrogen capacity due to hydriding/dehydriding cycles must be improved for its application. In this study, to improve such problems, we added a Nb. For attaining target materials, Ti-10Cr-xNb(x=1, 3, 5wt.%) specimens were prepared by arc melting. The arc melting process was carried out under argon atmosphere. As-received specimens were characterized using XRD(X-ray diffraction), SEM(Scanning Electron Microscopy) with EDX(Energy Dispersive X-ray) and TG/DSC(Thermo Gravimetric Analysis/Differential Scanning Calorimetry). In order to examine hydrogenation behavior, the PCI(pressure-Composition-Isotherm) was performed at 293, 323, 373 and 423K.

  • The intrinsic degradation behavior of $(V_{0.53}Ti_{0.47})_{0.925}Fe_{0.075}$ alloy with BCC structure and the two plateau regions (the low and high plateau region) has been investigate during the temperature-induced hydrogen absorption-desorption cycling (thermal cycling). After 400 thermal cycles between room temperature and $600^{\circ}C$ under 10atm $H_2$, the total reversible hydrogen absorption capacity decreased by about 40%. From thermal desorption analysis it was found that the degradation behavior at each plateau region was different. In addition, XRD analysis showed that the crystal structure of the sample in de-hydrided state was changed from BCC to BCT after degradation, and that of the sample in hydrided state it was maintained as FCC although peaks were broadened after degradation. From the result of static isothermal hydrogenation treatment it were found that crystal structure change from BCC to BCT was caused by the thermal energy. TEM analysis showed that the peak broadening was due to the formation of an amorphous phase in FCC matrix.

  • Electrochemical scanning tunneling microscopy was employed to study the evolution of surface morphology during electrochemical preparation of Si(111)-H from Si(111) oxide. Anodic dark current of cyclic voltammogram in 0.2M $NH_4F$ solution (pH 4.7) decreased as the number of cycles increased and remained nearly constant after the second cycle. Then, the Si(111) oxide was entirely stripped, which was followed by H termination on the Si(111) surface. Hydrides at kink and step sites were etched more rapidly than on the terrace, which remained triangle pits with [112] oriented steps where existed stable monohydride. Then, triangle pits deepened. During chronomamperometry at 0.4V anodic dark current shoulder appeared and decreased slowly, indicated the stripping of Si(111) oxide and the formation of stable (112) oriented steps with monohydride. Additionally, the etching mechanism of Si(111)-H in 0.2M $NH_4F(pH 4.7)$ solution at +0.4V was discussed.
