Quantitative Study of the Reformation of Excess Sludge by Intense Aeration Under Nutrient-poor Conditions

  • In the course of anaerobic storage of excess sludge, odors due to chemicals such as hydrogen sulfide are produced. These odors cause many problems. Many methods have been developed to eliminate odors, but all current methods are not only costly, but also largely inef­fective. In this paper, we investigate the process of transformation of sludge microorganism cul­tures through intense aeration under nutrient-poor conditions, in terms of the selective adjust­ment and control of microorganism culture. The aerated sludge is subsequently returned to the adjusting pool, where the microorganisms inhibit odors, thus the excess sludge itself will act as an odor inhibitor. The process can be verified in terms of viability, in that the degradation capac­ity of the sludge was maintained after the intensely-aerated sludge was returned to the treat­ment system.

  • The present study was performed to develop the removal system of the offensive gases, including hydrogen sulfide of acid gas, ammonia or amice of base gas, from the nightsoil treatment plant. In order to remove the offensive gases, the Fe-EDTA system liquid phase catalytic oxidation method with the bubble lift column reactor was employed. From the results obtained, it was confirmed that the offensive gases can be deodorized simultaneously and also hydrogen sulfide of acid gas, ammonia of base gas completely removed at pH 6.45. In addition, as input gases feed rate the efficiency of acid gas did not change but the efficiency of base gases decreased to approximately 90 % at pH 6, 0. From the result of particle size analyzer, it was found that the particle sizes including sulfur and other impurites grew up to $21{\mu}m$ over 72hour reaction time.

  • As the distributed generation becomes more reliable and economically feasible, it is expected that a higher application of the distributed generation units would be interconnected to the existing grids. This paper describes the results for the mechanical and environmental tests of pretreatment system material. Mechanical Characteristics make differences between parent / weldment, Notch existence / non-existence and air/$H_2O$ conditions. As a result, the life of pipe lines needs to maintain and fit for the operating period. Based on actual situations, the tension test of pipe welding-parts is carried out varying the exposure time of hydrogen sulfide and the fatigue resistance test is also performed inserting a notch into the pipe welding part, being exposed to the hydrogen sulfide environment for 720 hours.

  • Hydrogen sulfide, ammonia and benzene which are generated from natural leather industry were simultaneously removed using biofilter including benzene degrading microbial consortia and sulfur oxidizer Thiobacillus sp.IW. The removal efficiency of benzene was maintained 90% in average for single and mixed gas treatment and that of ammonia was 99%, whereas at of hydrogen sulfide was relatively lower 85%.

  • Lab-scale biofilter was studied for the simultaneous removal of ammonia and hydrogen sulfide in gas mixtures. Compost and polyurethane foam were used as packing materials (50 : 50) and activated sludge from a wastewater treatment plant was innoculated initially. When tested under varying inlet concentrations and empty bed residence time(EBRT), up to 80 ppmv of ammonia and 40 ppmv of hydrogen sulfide could be removed completely at an EBRT of 30 sec. The pH was found to be the key factor governing the biofilter performance.

  • 고온에서 황화수소(H$_{2}$S)를 제거하기 위한 흡착제를 개발할 목적으로 ZnO에 $Fe_{2}O_{3}$를 5~50 atomic %까지 첨가시켜 제조한 다공성 흡착제와 황화수소와의 반응(sulfidation)을 thermogravimetric analyzer (Shimadzu DT-30)로 수행하였으며, 고정층세서 zinc ferrite 흡착제의 흡착능을 측정하였다. 반응온도는723$^{\circ}$K~973$^{\circ}$K범위이며, 반응기체는 황화수소(2vol.%)와 질소와 혼합기체로서 total gas flow rate는 200ml/min으로 고정시켰다. Grain Model을 사용하여 실험데이터를 분석한 결과 전화율이 낮을 때 zinc ferrite와 황화수소 반응의 율속단계는 화학반응이었고 황화수소 농도에 대해 1차 반응이었다. 실험한 흡착제 중 10 atomic %의 $Fe_{2}O_{3}$를 첨가하여 제조한 zinc ferrite형 흡착제가 반응속도, 흡착능, 그리고 재생성면에서 우수한 흡착제로 밝혀졌다.

  • 석탄유도가스에 포함된 황화수소를 제거시킬 흡착제를 개발하기 위하여 알칼리 토금속, 천이원소 및 아연의 이온반경보다 이온반경이 작은 금속산화물을 산화아연에 첨가시켜 다공성 흡착제를 제조하였다. 600$\circ$C에서 이들 첨가시료를 2.09vol.% 황화수소와 질소가스 혼합기체로 반응시켜 초기속도를 측정하고, 같은 온도에서 사용된 흡착제를 공기로 재생시켰다. 사용된 금속산화물 첨가 흡착제중에서 CaO, TiO$_2$, $Fe_2O_3$, CuO, $Ga_2O_3$ 및 Si$_2$O가 ZnO 흡착제의 초기속도를 증가시켜 첨가제로 사용할 수 있음을 보였다.

A Study on Statistics for Accidents in Confined Space in Korea (밀폐공간 질식재해 통계현황 분석)

  • The total number of confined space accident cases from 1999 to 2007 in Korea were 220, causing 353 injuries and 212 casualties. Out of 220 cases, 44(20.0%) occurred in sewage treatment facilities and 40(18.2%) occurred in both manholes and containers. When the main causes of confined space accidents were classified, oxygen deficiency accounted for 69 cases(31.4%), carbon monoxide, 48(21.8%), hydrogen sulfide, 40(18.2%), and organic solvent, 32(14.5%). Improvement of occupational accident statistics is necessary in order to report accurate and precise data for confined space accidents. The structure of confined space must be considered when selecting gas to be measured.

  • Biofiltration of polluted gas streams contained $H_2S$ was studied. The experiments were performed in a laboratory-scale reactor with a porous ceramic media inoculated with sulfur oxidizing bacterium, TAS which was isolated from activiated sludge. The concentration of $H_2S$ in the inlet gas varied from 109 to 3,841 ppm, at the various space velocities(SV) of 50 $h^{-1}$ to 250 $h^{-1}$. Various tests have been conducted to evaluate the effects of such parameters as pH, concentration of sulfate ion and retention time on the pressure drop and maximum elimination capacity. The removal efficiency of $H_2S$ decreased as the $H_2S$ concentration or gas velocity increased in the inlet gas. Pressure drop was insignificant in this system. The maximum elimination capacity could reach up to 16.35g-S/kg-dry packing material/day.

  • This paper presents an effective cooling dehumidification method to remove odorous gas from food-wastes. The odorous gases, such as Styrene, Ammonia, Hydrogen sulfide and Acetaldehyde, are produced in environments where temperature is $50\sim80^{\circ}C$ and humidity is $40\sim70%$. Under such conditions, experiments are performed reiteratively using experiment equipments. The effect of the cooling dehumidification is measured via measuring instrument, and this research is focused on improving efficiency. The effect of cooling dehumidification using measuring instrument is validated. At $80^{\circ}C$, four type of gases that was mentioned previously showed generally better cooling efficiency with a good result for a component concentration. Among them, hydrogen sulfide gas demonstrated the highest reduction of 50%.
