The Future of NVH Research - A Challenge by New Powertrains

  • Sound quality and NVH-issues(Noise, Vibration and Harshness) of vehicles has become very important for car manufacturers. It is interpreted as among the most relevant factors regarding perceived product quality, and is important in gaining market advantage. The general sound quality of vehicles was gradually improved over the years. However, today the development cycles in the automotive industry are constantly reduced to meet the customers' demands and to react quickly to market needs. In addition, new drive and fuel concepts, tightened ecological specifications, increase of vehicle classes and increasing diversification(increasing market for niche vehicles), etc. challenge the acoustic engineers trying to develop a pleasant, adequate, harmonious passenger cabin sound. Another aspect concerns the general pressure for reducing emission and fuel consumption, which lead to vehicle weight reductions through material changes also resulting in new noise and vibration conflicts. Furthermore, in the context of alternative powertrains and engine concepts, the new objective is to detect and implement the vehicle sound, tailored to suit the auditory expectations and needs of the target group. New questions must be answered: What are appropriate sounds for hybrid or electric vehicles? How are new vehicle sounds perceived and judged? How can customer-oriented, client-specific target sounds be determined? Which sounds are needed to fulfil the driving task, and so on? Thus, advanced methods and tools are necessary which cope with the increasing complexity of NVH-problems and conflicts and at the same time which cope with the growing expectations regarding the acoustical comfort. Moreover, it is exceedingly important to have already detailed and reliable information about NVH-issues in early design phases to guarantee high quality standards. This requires the use of sophisticated simulation techniques, which allow for the virtual construction and testing of subsystems and/or the whole car in early development stages. The virtual, testing is very important especially with respect to alternative drive concepts(hybrid cars, electric cars, hydrogen fuel cell cars), where complete new NVH-problems and challenges occur which have to be adequately managed right from the beginning. In this context, it is important to mention that the challenge is that all noise contributions from different sources lead to a harmonious, well-balanced overall sound. The optimization of single sources alone does not automatically result in an ideal overall vehicle sound. The paper highlights modern and innovative NVH measurement technologies as well as presents solutions of recent NVH tasks and challenges. Furthermore, future prospects and developments in the field of automotive acoustics are considered and discussed.

자동차 내장재의 화재위험성에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Fire Risk of Car Interior Materials)

  • 본 연구에서는 자동차 내장재에 적용되고 있는 플라스틱 합성물질의 화재위험성을 알아보기 위하여 콘칼로리미터를 이용한 열방출특성, 연기밀도시험기를 이용한 연기발생특성 및 독성지수시험기를 이용한 유 독성을 측정하였다. 자동차 내장재를 구성하고 있는 주요 부위별로 3종류씩 총 12개의 시편을 준비하여 실험하였다. 콘칼로리미터 실험결과, PVC sheet 및 PVC leather가 약 2초의 가장 빠른 착화시간을 보였으며, 12개의 시편 중 8개의 시편이 10초 이내의 착화시간을 나타냈다. 최대열방출률은 232~635$kW/m^2$ 정도로서 나일론과 PE로 구성된 플로우매트가 $635kW/m^2$의 가장 큰 최대열방출률을 보였다. Rubber로 구성된 보조매트는 최대열방출률은 가장 낮았지만 총열방출은 가장 큰 값을 보였다. 연기밀도시험기 실험 결과, rubber로 구성된 보조매트는 약 924의 가장 큰 연기밀도값을 보였으며, 초기연기발생량을 확인할수 있는 VOF4값은 PVC leather로 구성된 시트가 가장 큰 값을 나타냈다. 독성지수시험기 실험결과, 대부분의 시편에서 이산화탄소의 치사농도를 초과하였고, PVC를 포함하고 있는 시편에서 염화수소 및 브롬화수소의 검출수치가 비교적 높게 나타났으며, 치사농도를 초과하였다. 13가지 특정가스의 치사농도와 발생농도를 이용한 독성지수는 PVC sheet가 상대적으로 가장 높은 것으로 나타났으며, 모든 시편의 독성지수 1을 초과하는 결과를 보였다.

  • Microalgae can offer an attractive way of generating renewable and sustainable biodiesel. Biodiesel derived from microagae can have lower impact on the environment and food supply than biodiesel produced from crops. But biodiesel derived from microagae have poor fuel properties at low temperature depending on their species. In this study, it was investigated that fuel characteristics of biodiesel derived from Tetraselmis sp. and cold weather performance of biodiesel blend (BD3, 3 vol.% biodiesel - 97 vol.% diesel). The startability and operability of the passenger car in BD3 was good at $-20^{\circ}C$.

Role of the Amino Acid Residues in the Catalysis of Catechol 2,3-dioxygenase from Pseudomonas putida SU10 as Probed by Chemical Modification and Random Mutagenesis

  • The catechol 2,3-dioxygenase (C23O) encoded by the Pseudomonas putida xylE gene was over-produced in Escherichia coli and purified to homogeneity. The activity of the C23O required the reduced form of the Fe(II) ion since the enzyme was highly susceptible to inactivation with hydrogen perocide but reactivated with the addition of ferrous sulfate in conjunction with ascorbic acid. The C23O activity was abolished by treatment with the chemical reagents, diethyl-pyrocarbonate (DEPC), tetranitromethane (TNM), and 1-cyclohexy1-3-(2-morpholinoethyl) car-bodiimidemetho-ρ-toluenesulfontate (CMC), which are modifying reagents of histidine, tyrosine and glutamic acid, respectively. These results suggest that histidine, tyrosine and glutamic acid residues may be good active sites for the enzyme activity. These amino acid residues are conserved residues may be good active sites for the enzyme activity. These amino acid residues are conserved residues among several extradion dioxygenases and have the chemical potential to serveas ligands for Fe(II) coordination. Analysis of random point mutants in the C23O gene derived by PCR technique revealed that the mutated positions of two mutants, T179S and S211R, were located near the conserved His165 amd Hos217 residues, respectively. This finding indicates that these two positions, along with the conserved histidine residues, are specially effective regions for the enzyme function.

경기도 대기질 개선 정책의 온실가스 동시 저감 및 그에 따른 공편익 효과 분석 (Greenhouse Gas Reduction by Air Quality Management Policy in Gyeonggi-do and Its Co-benefit Analysis)

  • In recent years, national and local government's air quality management and climate change adaptation policy has been significantly strengthened. The measures in the two policies may be in a relationship of trade-off or synergy to each other. Greenhouse gases and air pollutants are mostly emitted from the same sources of using considerable amounts of fossil fuels. Co-benefits, in which either measure has a positive effect on the other, may be maximized by reducing the social costs and by consolidating the objectives of the various policies. In this study, the co-benefits were examined by empirically analyzing the effects of air pollutants and greenhouse gas emission reduction, social cost, and cost effectiveness between the two policies. Of the total 80 projects, the next 12 projects generated co-benefits. They are 1) extend restriction area of solid fuel use, 2) expand subsidy of low-$NO_x$ burner, 3) supply hybrid-vehicles, 4) supply electric-vehicles, 5) supply hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, 6) engine retrofit, 7) scrappage of old car, 8) low emission zone, 9) transportation demand management, 10) supply land-based electric of ship, 11) switching anthracite to clean fuel in private sector, 12) expand regional combined-energy supply. The benefits of air pollutants and greenhouse gas-related measures were an annual average of KRW 2,705.4 billion. The social benefits of the transportation demand management were the highest at an annual average of KRW 890.7 billion, and followed by scrappage of old cars and expand regional combined-energy supply. When the social benefits and the annual investment budgets are compared, the cost effectiveness ratio is estimated to be about 3.8. Overall, the reduction of air pollutants caused by the air quality management policy of Gyeonggi-do resulted in an annual average of KRW 4,790.2 billion. In the point sources management sector, the added value of $CO_2$ reduction increased by 4.8% to KRW 1,062.8 billion, while the mobile sources management sector increased by 3.6% to KRW 3,414.1 billion. If social benefits from $CO_2$ reduction are added, the annual average will increase by 7.2% to KRW 5,135.4 billion. The urban and energy management sectors have shown that social benefits increase more than twice as much as the benefits of $CO_2$ reduction. This result implies that more intensive promotion of these measures are needed. This study has significance in that it presents the results of the empirical analysis of the co-benefits generated between the similar policies in the air quality management and the climate change policy which are currently being promoted in Gyeonggi-do. This study suggested that the method of analyzing the policy effect among the main policies in the climate atmospheric policy is established and the effectiveness and priority of the major policies can be evaluated through the policy correlation analysis based on the co-benefits. It is expected that it could be a basis for evaluation the efficiency of the climate change adaptation and air quality management policies implemented by the national and local governments in the future.
