  • In the present study, a numerical simulation for the diffusion of hydrogen jet in a enclosure was performed to aid the leakage test of the hydrogen for the safety of the hydrogen vehicle. The temporal and spatial distributions of the hydrogen concentration in the test chamber are predicted from the present numerical analyses. Flammable region of 4-74% and explosive region of 18-59% hydrogen by volume was identified from the present results. Factors influencing the diffusion of the hydrogen jet were examined to evaluate the effectiveness of forced ventilation for relieving the accumulation of the leaked hydrogen gas in the chamber, which include location of open windows, size of leakage nozzle, and leakage rate among others. The distribution of the concentration of the leaked hydrogen for various cases can be used as a database in various applications for the hydrogen safety.

  • Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is used to reduce number of experiments. The CFD tools are widely used for engine design and flow pattern analysis to reduce experiments. In this study the performance of a PEMFC single cell was analyzed by using STAR-CD, product of CD-ADAPCO. The effect of cell design and flow pattern on the performance of a PEMFC was analyzed with the 3-D simulation. As a result the performance of rectangular cell was the higher than that of square cell, while the flow direction scarcely affected on the performance of a PEMFC. Also the current density according to different excess ratio of air flow rate was compared and analyzed. The difference between maximum and minimum current density of flip-flow was lower than that of co-flow.

  • The Li-ion battery is considered to be one of the potential power sources for electric vehicles. In fact, the efficiency, reliability, and cycle life of Li-ion batteries are highly influenced by their thermal conditions. Therefore, a novel thermal management system is highly required to simultaneously achieve high performance and long life of the battery pack. Basically, thermal modeling is a key issue for the novel thermal management of Li-ion battery systems. In this paper, as a basic study for battery thermal modeling, temperature distributions inside the simple Li-ion battery pack (comprises of nine 18650 Li-ion batteries) under a 1C discharging condition were investigated using measurement and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation approaches. The heat flux boundary conditions of battery cells for the CFD thermal analysis of battery pack were provided by the measurement of single battery cell temperature. The temperature distribution inside the battery pack were compared at six monitoring locations. Results show that the accurate estimation of heat flux at the surface of single cylindrical battery is paramount to the prediction of temperature distributions inside the Li-ion battery under various discharging conditions (C-rates). It is considered that the research approach for the estimation of temperature distribution used in this study can be used as a basic tool to understand the thermal behavior of Li-ion battery pack for the construction of effective battery thermal management systems.

A Comparative Study for Steam-Methane Reforming Reaction Analysis Model (수증기-메탄개질반응 해석모델의 비교연구)

  • Hydrogen is considered as a fuel of the future for its renewability and environmental compatibility. The reforming of hydrocarbon fuels is currently the most important source of hydrogen, which is expected to continue for next several decades. In this study, extensive CFD simulations on the steam-methane reforming process were conducted to study the performance of four reaction models, i.e. three Arrhenius-type models and a user-defined function (UDF) model. The accuracies of different reaction models for various operating temperatures and steam carbon ratios (SCRs) were evaluated by comparing their CFD results with zero-dimensional intrinsic model of Xu and Froment. It was found that the UDF model generally produced more accurate results than Arrhenius-type models. However, it was also shown that Arrhenius-type models could be made sufficiently accurate by choosing appropriate reaction coefficients, and thus could also be useful for the simulation of the steam-methane reforming process.

  • Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) has low operating temperature and high efficiency. And PEMFC consists of many components as bipolar plate, gas diffusion layer, membrane etc.. Flow-field in bipolar plate roles path for transporting reactants to membrane. Therefore a design of flow-field has an effect on PEMFC's performance. In this study, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations were performed for comparing mixed multiple serpentine (MMS) flow-field and multiple serpentine (MS) flow-field. And we studied an effect according to change mixing region design in MMS flow-field. Finally the applicability of results is verified by performing CFD simulation about fixed MMS flow-field which is combined good designs.

Effects of the Internal Structure on the Distribution Performance of a Refrigerant Distributor (냉매분배기 분배성능에 미치는 내부 형상인자의 영향)

  • The distribution performance of refrigerant distributors in air conditioner evaporators was examined numerically and experimentally. Internal flow analysis of the distributor by CFD found that the distance from the socket to the cone, the angle of the cone and the base area of the cone were the most important factors affecting refrigerant distribution ability and vortex creation. To enhance distribution performance, two distributors with improved internal structures were designed. To test these new structures, distribution performance was also analyzed by CFD and an empirical experiment was carried out using the water-nitrogen. Experimental results on the distribution fraction of each distributor hole showed a good agreement with the results of the CFD analysis. Thus, the new design of the distributors enhanced distribution performance of the refrigerant distributors.

  • In this study, effects of flow types and size of molten carbonate fuel cells (MCFCs) were investigated using CFD simulation. In the simulation, the current collector of MCFCs were assumed to be an porous media. With the area of $0.09m^2$, the effect of flow types such as Co-flow, Counter-flow, Cross-flow were studied. After that the effect of the size and flow direction was studied. Among three-flow types, MCFCs with co-flow type shows more uniform distribution and current density distribution.

  • Recently, as the fine dust is increased and the emission regulations of diesel engines are strengthened, interest in diesel soot filtration devices is rapidly increased. In particular, there is a demand for technology development for higher efficiency of diesel exhaust gas after-treatment devices. As part of this, many studies conducted to increase the exhaust gas treatment efficiency by improving the flow uniformity of the exhaust gas in the DPF and reducing the pressure drop between the inlet and outlet of disel particle filter (DPF). In this study, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation was performed when exhaust gas flows into the canning reduction device equipped with a 13" asymmetric DPF in order to maintain the flow uniformity in the diesel exhaust system and reduce the pressure. In particular, a study was conducted to find the geometry with the smallest pressure drop and the highest flow uniformity by simulating the DPF I/O ratio, exhaust gas temperature, inlet-outlet pressure and flow uniformity according to the geometry and hole size of distributor.

  • To improve the safety, the fuel cell operate inside a pressurized enclosure which contains inert gas so called protective gas. The protective gas not only prevents the mixture of hydrogen and oxygen, but also removes the water in the vessel with the condenser. This study presents the details of the flow optimization in order to reduce the humidity in the fuel cell housing. The protective gas flow in the fuel cell container is studied by Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) simulations. This study focuses on optimizing the geometry of an protective gas circulation system in fuel cell module to reduce the humidity in the vessel. CFD analysis was carried out for an existing model to understand the flow behavior through the fuel cell system. Based on existing model CFD results, geometrical changes like inlet placement, optimization of outlet size, modification of fuel cell module system are carried out, to improve the flow characteristics. The CFD analysis of the optimized model is again carried out and the results show good improvement in protective gas flow behavior.
