The flow characteristics around a rudder in open water condition is analyzed by the computational method. Reynolds averaged Navier-Stoke's equation is utilized for the computation. The computational hydrodynamic force coefficients are verified through comparing with the experimental results. The information of these flow characteristics is necessary to predict cavitation and maneuvering performances, to estimate steering gear capacitance, and to get the bending moment which is useful for the structural analysis. The pressure distribution, the three-dimensional flow separation, and the tip vortices are investigated. The pattern of the three-dimensional flow separation is analyzed utilizing a topological rule. The tip vortices are also investigated through a visualization technique.
Hydrodynamic pressure fluctuations and their roles on the design of hydraulic structures has been the subject of many investigations. The studies showed that turbulent pressure fluctuations may cause serious damages to hydraulic structures. In case of high velocity flows, separation of flow from the boundary also causes the local pressure to drop and as a result, the resultant pressure fluctuations may trigger cavitation. Sever hydrodynamic pressures are also associated with the vibration of structures. Therefore, in this work, experiments were performed to determine the intensity of pressure fluctuations and their distribution along the bed of a ski-jump flip bucket. Experiments were completed on a physical model at the Institution of Water Research of Iran. The results consist of the statistical characteristics of pressure fluctuations, its maximum, minimum, and r.m.s values along the bed of the bucket. The spectral analysis of pressure fluctuations which is useful for the instability analysis of such structures is also provided. It is hoped that the present results will help the designer of such structures.

In this study an attempt has been made to study the hydrodynamic performance of pumpjet propulsor. Numerical investigation based on the Reynolds Averaged NaviereStokes (RANS) computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method has been carried out. The structured grid and SST ${\kappa}-{\omega}$ turbulence model have been applied. The numerical simulations of open water performance of marine propeller E779A are carried out with different advance ratios to verify the numerical simulation method. Results show that the thrust and the torque are in good agreements with experimental data. The grid independent inspection is applied to verify accuracy of numerical simulation grid. The numerical predictions of hydrodynamic performance of pumpjet propulsor are carried out with different advance ratios. Results indicate that the rotor provides the main thrust of propulsor and the balance performance of propulsor is generally satisfactory. Additionally, the curve of propulsor efficiency is in good agreement with experimental data. Furthermore, the pressure distributions around rotor and stator blades are reasonable. Beyond that, the existence of tip clearance accounts for the appearance of tip vortex that leads to a further loss in efficiency and a probability of cavitation phenomenon.

This paper provides quantification of the effects of the turbulence model and grid refinement on the analysis of tip vortex flows by using the RANS(Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes) method. Numerical simulations of the tip vortex flows of the NACA $66_2$-415 elliptic hydrofoil were conducted, and two turbulence models for RANS closure were tested, i.e., the Realizable $k-{\varepsilon}$ model and the Reynolds stress transport model. Numerical results were compared with available experimental data, and it was shown that the data for the Reynolds stress transport model that were computed on the finest grid system had better agreement in reproducing the development and propagation of the tip vortex. The Realizable $k-{\varepsilon}$ model overestimated the turbulence level in the vortex core and showed a diffusive behavior of the tip vortex. The tip vortex cavitation on the hydrofoil and its trajectory also showed good agreement between the current numerical results that were obtained using the Reynolds stress transport model and the results observed in the experiment.
Recently, butterfly valves are used as control valves for industrial process. However, there are not so many reports on cryogenic butterfly valves in spite of broad application in LNG storage station and LNG carriers. Present study is focused on the investigation of the detailed hydrodynamic and aerodynamic characteristics of cryogenic butterfly valves to contribute to the operation during the handling on LNG transportation system, and to the practical utilization in design of butterfly valves and actuators. The results show that large recirculation vortices in the region downstream of the valve are founded and the cavitation flows are intensively generated on the surface of valve disc at the relatively small opening angle. The aerodynamic characteristics, lift, drag and torque, acting on the valve disc are calculated. The pressure distribution and the pressure loss coefficient of the cryogenic butterfly valve show almost similar pattern with those of the butterfly valve which is used on the normal temperature.
Underwater robots are generally used for the construction of seabed structures, deep-sea ecosystem research, ocean energy development, etc. A ducted marine propulsor is widely used for the thruster of an underwater robot because of its collision protection, efficiency increase, cavitation reduction, etc. However, the flow of a ducted propeller is very complex because it involves strong flow interactions between the blade impeller and duct. The present work aimed to design a ducted propeller using 2-D strip theory and CFD analysis. The hydrodynamic forces (i.e. and ) were computed to set the local angle of attack in a spanwise direction of the propeller blade. After the propeller design, performance coefficients such as the thrust, torque, and efficiency were computed to check whether the designed performance was achieved. To validate the present analysis, the thrust was compared with experimental data and good agreement was obtained.
The incompressible Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) equations are solved using the standard $\textsc{k}-\varepsilon$ turbulence model and a finite volume method(FVM)with an O-type grid system. The computed results for its performance test are in good agreement with the published experimental data. The present method is applied to the study on the leading edge radius of a hydrofoil section Calculated results suggest that the leading edge radius has some effects on cavitation performances of a 2-D foil. A natural leading edge radius for the NACA66 section is determined from this study.
To investigate the jet effect on circulation control, a segment of model was prepared and inserted horizontally across the test section of the cavitation tunnel. The hydrodynamic forces acting on the model were measured under the 2 dimensional flow behavior. Circulation flow control requires higher flow rate of water jet than boundary layer control does. Jet injection is effective in increasing lift coefficient and the increments reach to 160% in a certain combination of parameters such as an angle of attack, jet flow rate and flap angle. The blown water jet not only reduces form drag but also thrust effect, which is sometimes greater than the form drag in specific conditions.
The use of "clean fuels" such as butane, propane, and mixtures of these (LPG) is an attractive way to reduce exhaust emissions. In this study internal flow of the pintle type injector for LPG engine is studied. The breakup of liquid jet is the result of competing, unstable hydrodynamic forces acting on the liquid jet as it exits the nozzle. The nozzle geometry and up-stream injection conditions affect the characteristics of flow inside the nozzle, such as turbulence and cavitation bubbles. A set of calculations of the internal flow in a pintle type nozzle were performed using a two dimensional flow simulation under different nozzle geometry and upstream flow conditions. The calculation showed that the turbulent intensity and discharge coefficient are related to needle leading angle(.alpha.) and needle lift.edle lift.
