  • A physical model experiment with GPR and 3-D resisitivity survey were conducted to investigate the geoelectrical response of hydrocarbon-impacted zone, so called smeared zone, on the geophysical data. The results from the experiment show that GPR signals were enhanced when LNAPL was present as a residual saturation in the water saturated system (${\varepsilon}_r$ = 21) due to less attenuation of the electromagnetic energy through the medium, compared to when the medium was saturated with only water (${\varepsilon}_r$ = 21). 3-D resistivity data obtained from the former gas station site demonstrate that the highly contaminated zones could be imaged with low resistivities attributed to the biodegradation of petroleum hydrocarbons at the aged, hydrocarbon-impacted sites. The study results also show that the geophysical methods, as a non-invasive sounding technique, can be a very useful tool for mapping hydrocarbon-contaminated zones.

  • The application of hydrocarbon refrigerant mixtures in a hermetic reciprocating compressor for dehumidifier is investigated. The selected refrigerants are R12, R134a, HC-Blend (R290/R600a), CX(R152a/R600a) and OS-l2a. Both theoretical and experimental investigations have been performed for the selected refrigerants. The test results of hydrocarbon refrigerants have been compared to traditional refrigerant(R12) and R134a. The results show that hydrocarbon refrigerant mixtures(HC-Blend, CX and OS-l2a) are very good alternatives in the refrigeration system for R12 and R134a.

  • A back propagation artificial neural network model with one hidden layer is established to correlate the liquid-liquid equilibrium data of hydrocarbon-water systems. The model has four inputs and two outputs. The network is systematically trained with 48 data points in the range of 283.15 to 405.37K. Statistical analyses show that the optimised neural network model can yield excellent agreement with experimental data(the average absolute deviations equal to 0.037% and 0.0012% for the correlated mole fractions of hydrocarbon in two coexisting liquid phases respectively). The comparison in terms of average absolute deviation between the correlated mole fractions for each binary system and literature results indicates that the artificial neural network model gives far better results. This study also shows that artificial neural network model could be developed for the phase equilibria for a family of hydrocarbon-water binaries.

  • Using gas chromatography, the light hydrocarbon emissions were analyzed from SI engine fueled with methane and liquified petroleum gas(LPG), and the effects of fuel and engine operating condition were discussed. For this purpose, 14 species of light hydrocarbon including 1, 3-butadiene were separated, calibrated with standard gas, and measured from undiluted emissions. The brake specific hydrocarbon emission(BSHC) and ozone forming potential(BSO)3 were calculated and discussed with the changes of fuel, engine speed, load, fuel/air equivalence ratio, coolant temperature, and spark timing. As a result, exhaust emission was composed of mainly fuel composed of mainly fuel comp- onent and other olefin components of similar carbon number. The olefin components such as ethylene and propylene determine most of the ozone forming potential. The fraction of fuel component in total hydrocarbon emission was bigger with methane fuel than with LPG fuel. Also fuel fraction increased at high speed or high speed or high temperature of exhaust gas, and to lesser extent with high coolant temperature and retarded spark. However, the effect of equivalence ratio had different tendency according to fuels.

  • Demand for organic analysis increase as industries are growing and many products are spreaded in the daily life. One of many products is oil spill dispersant. It was used for oil accident in the ocean. When oil spill dispersant spread at the ocean, the petroleum in the ocean is dispersed. The oil spill dispersant is made of non ionic surfactant and petroleum oil. The non ionic surfactant disperse petroleum from oil accident. The other part is petroleum oil which has aromatic hydrocarbon. Because the aromatic hydrocarbon is cancerogenic material, it directly injure animals in the ocean. This cause the second pollution in the human body. Many oil accidents still are controlled by oil spill dispersant. Therefore quality control of the oil spill dispersant become important and this also demand for the exact quantitative analysis of aromatic hydrocarbon. Hereupon the first we develop separate petroleum oil from surfactant. The second standardize analytical method of aromatic hydrocarbon in the separated petroleum oil.

  • The chemical compositions of natural gases and isotopic compositions of hydrocarbon gases were analyzed to characterize the properties of the gases which were found in the exploratory wells from offshore Korea, as well as those dissolved in the ground water onshore in the Pohang area. Natural gases from the offshore area mainly consisted of hydrocarbon gases $(97.98{\~}100{\%})$. The gases were composed of methane $(90{\~}96{\%})$ and minor amounts of heavier components up to $C_{6+}$ Hydrocarbon gases extracted from the groundwater in the Pohang area consisted of methane $(27{\~}376420 ppm)$ and ethane $(19{\~}127 ppm)$. The total amount of hydrocarbon gases was related to the lithology and geological factors surrounding the reservoir. The quantity of the hydrocarbon gases tended to Increase in the Tertiary reservoirs and in the reservoirs where the Tertiary formations were thickly distributed. According to the methane contents, composition of hydrocarbon gases, and stable isotope data, gases from offshore wells are identified as thermogenic in origin, generated during catagenesis stage of the oil window. On the otherhand, based on the methane content $(>99.9\%)$ and isotopic composition $(\delta^{13} C^;\; -73.1{\sim}\;-43.22{\%}_{\circ})$, it is interpretated that the gases from the Pohang area are predominantly composed of biogenic origins, which were generated by the methanogenic bacterial processes under low temperatures and anoxic conditions.

  • Experimental results for heat transfer characteristic and pressure gradient of hydrocarbon refrigerants (R-290, R-600a, R-1270) and HCFC refrigerant (R-22) during condensation inside horizontal double pipe heat exchangers are presented. The test sections which have one tube diameter of 12.70 mm with 0.89 mm, 9.52 mm with 0.76 mm, 6.35 mm with 0.13 mm wall thickness are used for this investigation, respectively. The local condensing heat transfer coefficients of hydrocarbon refrigerants were higher than those of R-22. The average condensing heat transfer coefficient increased with the increase of the mass flux. It showed the higher values in hydrocarbon refrigerants than R-22. Hydrocarbon refrigerants have higher pressure drop than R-22 in 10.92 mm, 8 mm and 6.1 mm inner diameters. These results from the investigation can be used in the design of heat transfer exchangers using hydrocarbons as the refrigerant for the air-conditioning systems.

  • Fundamental parameters describing overall operational characteristics of active cooling systems of a hypersonic flight vehicle are mainly classified into endothermic hydrocarbon fuels, regenerative cooling channels, and materials and system structures. Of primary importance is the improvement of endothermic performance of hydrocarbon aviation fuels in a series of studies developing efficient regenerative cooling systems. In a previous study, therefore, an extensive technical analysis has been carried out on thermal decomposition characteristics of liquid hydrocarbon fuels. As a subsequent study, catalytic cracking and steam reforming technologies have been reviewed to find a way for the improvement of endothermic reaction performance of hydrocarbon aviation fuels.

  • Low temperature diesel combustion was achieved via a combination of late injection timing ($8.5^{\circ}$ CA BTDC to $0.5^{\circ}$ CA BTDC) and heavy exhaust gas recirculation (37% to 48%) with ultra low sulfur Swedish diesel fuel in a 1.7L common rail direct injection diesel engine. When injection timing is retarded at a certain exhaust gas recirculation rate, the particulate matter and nitrogen oxides decease simultaneously, while the hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide increase. Hydrocarbon speciation by gas chromatography using a flame ionization detector reveals that the ratio of partially burned hydrocarbon, i.e., mainly alkenes increase as the injection timing is retarded and exhaust gas recirculation is increased. The two most abundant hydrocarbon species are ethene which is a representative species of partially burned hydrocarbons, and n-undecane, which is a representative species of unburned hydrocarbons. They may be used as surrogate hydrocarbon species for performing a bench flow reactor test for catalyst development.

  • Heavy hydrocarbon reforming is a core technology for "Dirty energy smart". Heavy hydrocarbons are components of fossil fuels, biomass, coke oven gas and etc. Heavy hydrocarbon reforming converts the fuels into $H_2$-rich syngas. And then $H_2$-rich syngas is used for the production of electricity, synthetic fuels and petrochemicals. Energy can be used efficiently and obtained from various sources by using $H_2$-rich syngas from heavy hydrocarbon reforming. Especially, the key point of "Dirty energy smart" is using "dirty fuel" which is wasted in an inefficient way. New energy conversion laboratory of KAIST has been researched diesel reforming for solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) as a part of "Dirty energy smart". Diesel is heavy hydrocarbon fuels which has higher carbon number than natural gas, kerosene and gasoline. Diesel reforming has difficulties due to the evaporation of fuels and coke formation. Nevertheless, diesel reforming technology is directly applied to "Dirty fuel" because diesel has the similar chemical properties with "Dirty fuel". On the other hand, SOFC has advantages on high efficiency and wasted heat recovery. Nippon oil Co. of Japan recently commercializes 700We class SOFC system using city gas. Considering the market situation, the development of diesel reformer has a great ripple effect. SOFC system can be applied to auxiliary power unit and distributed power generation. In addition, "Dirty energy smart" can be realized by applying diesel reforming technology to "Dirty fuel". As well as material developments, multidirectional approaches are required to reform heavy hydrocarbon fuels and use $H_2$-rich gas in SOFC. Gd doped ceria (CGO, $Ce_{1-x}Gd_xO_{2-y}$) has been researched for not only electrolyte materials but also catalysts supports. In addition, catalysts infiltrated electrode over porous $La_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}Ga_{0.8}Mg_{0.2}O_3-{\delta}$ and catalyst deposition at three phase boundary are being investigated to improve the performance of SOFC. On the other hand, nozzle for diesel atomization and post-reforming for light-hydrocarbons removal are examples of solving material problems in multidirectional approaches. Likewise, multidirectional approaches are necessary to realize "Dirty energy smart" like reforming "Dirty fuel" for SOFC.
