Improvement of Formability in the Multi-Stage Sheet Pair Hydroforming Process (박판 페어 하이드로포밍 공정의 성형성 향상을 위한 다단 성형 공정의 개발)

  • In the automotive industry hydroforming of sheet metal pairs have received special attention because materials for various sheet metal components of vehicles have changed into the high strength steel, aluminum, and titanium blank having low formability. Uniform deformation over the whole region is a main advantage in the sheet hydroforming process. Because upper and lower parts could be produced simultaneously with one tool, hydroforming of sheet metal pairs is competitive in reducing the lead-time and development cost. In this paper, the multi-stage hydroforming process of sheet pair is proposed in order to increase the formability of a structural part like the oil pan shape. The upper die for forming oil pan shape is divided into two parts which can move separately. By the finite element simulation, the design parameters such as geometry of the tool and detailed specification of hydraulic pump were calculated and verified. For the strict comparison of the proposed process, the blank holding force is kept to a constant value during deformation by hydraulic valve. The deformed shape and strain distribution of the manufactured parts with the proposed process are compared with the results of simulation. In the multi-stage hydroforming process, maximum thickness strain was improved by more than 30 percent.

  • The distributor for hydraulic pumps or motors, particularly radial piston motors, include rotary member which has equally both surface shape for dynamic balance and two fixed members, located in both side of rotary member, which have equal surface shape for dynamic balance and circular ring which use to retain predetermined clearance between two fixed members. Rotary member must have valve part for flow-distribution and can have hydrostatic bearing for excellently dynamic balance. At least two annular steps located on said pressure plate which use in compensation of bolt expansion.

  • In order to enable fail-safe operation the electro-hydrostatic actuators can be dualized. When a symmetrical actuator is combined in series with an asymmetrical actuator with single rod cylinder, the flow rates of their cylinders are unmatched. If their position controller has same configuration, one of their pumps can supply too much flow rate under particular load conditions, which should be bypassed into low pressure side e.g. by a relief valve. In this paper it is shown how the hydraulic circuit for the asymmetrically combined electro-hydrostatic actuator can be designed without sacrificing power consumption.

  • This study is a first step toward reducing surge pressure, and it has another purpose, which is to developing an analysis model which can closely analyze a hydraulic circuit and be used in design. For development of analysis model, SimulationX, a commercial program, is used. The study progress methods are as follows. By analyzing the structure and operating mechanisms of each part of the hydraulic system of the pump truck and referring its parameters, develop a single component model. Assemble the developed single component model, and make an overall analysis the model. By comparing the similarities between the developed model and the actual system's test results, validate the reliability of the analysis model.

  • The basic elements in a rotary-type scroll compressor are two identical spiral scrolls containing refrigerant gas. The pressure variations in the compression pockets of a scroll compressor change the forces acting on the orbiting scroll, and these forces affect the dynamic behavior of the compression mechanism parts. To achieve high efficiency, using a self-sealing mechanism as a tip seal mechanism is very effective. Tip seals, which are placed on top of the scroll wraps, accomplish thrust sealing. This study calculates the friction force between the tip seal and the side plate of a scroll compressor using the numerical model considered in the Reynolds equation. The calculated friction force is verified by an experiment using a pin-on-disk apparatus. A hydraulic servo valve that controls the pressure of the oil hydraulic cylinder applies the normal load for the test, and a DC servo motor controls the sliding velocity of the disk. The friction force and normal load are measured by the force sensors attached to the supporting parts. The results show that the theoretical and experimental results are similar and that the friction is influenced by the viscosity of the oil and the sliding velocity of the scroll.

  • Three small-break loss-of-coolant accident (SBLOCA) tests with safety injection pumps were carried out using the integral-effect test loop for SMART (System-integrated Modular Advanced ReacTor), i.e., the SMART-ITL facility. The types of break are a safety injection system line break, shutdown cooling system line break, and pressurizer safety valve line break. The thermal-hydraulic phenomena show a traditional behavior to decrease the temperature and pressure whereas the local phenomena are slightly different during the early stage of the transient after a break simulation. A safety injection using a high-pressure pump effectively cools down and recovers the inventory of a reactor coolant system. The global trends show reproducible results for an SBLOCA scenario with three different break locations. It was confirmed that the safety injection system is robustly safe enough to protect from a core uncovery.

  • Hydrostatic transmission (HST) comprises rotary parts, shafts, valve plate, swashplate, and servo pistons. Ensuring structural stability of each part of an HST has a significant impact on product safety. In this study, the structural stability of HST in agricultural machinery and industrial vehicles was analyzed using ANSYS software. For conservative evaluation, high-pressure conditions (35.5 MPa and 2 MPa pilot pressure) were applied as load conditions. The number of grids used in the calculations ranged from 0.4 to 0.8 million depending on modeling requirements. Structural analysis was performed for essential parts and safety factor was analyzed. All major parts of HST had a safety factor of ≥ 1.5. Thus, they were judged to be structurally safe. This study provides important information for designing an HST system.

An evaluation of the pipe failure impact in a water distribution system considering subsystem isolation (상수관 파괴시 관망의 부분적 격리를 고려한 피해범위 산정)

  • To evaluate the pipe failure impact, current methodologies consider only a broken pipe as the impacted area. However, these approaches are accurate if the broken pipe is the only area isolated from tile system. Depending on the number and locations of on-off valves, more pipes which are adjacent to a broken pipe may be isolated. Using the concept of Segment suggested by Walski, the methodology evaluating the pipe failure impact incorporated with on-off valve locations has been suggested by Jun. However, a segment cannot account for all possible pipe failure impacted areas since it does not consider additional failures, namely the network topological failure and the hydraulic pressure failure. For this reason, a methodology which can consider the network topology and hydraulic pressure limitation as well as on-off valve locations is suggested. The suggested methodology is applied to a real network to verify its applicability As results, it is found that a single pipe failure can affect huge areas depending on the configuration of on-off valves and the network topology. Thus, the applicability of the suggested methodology for evaluating the pipe failure impacts on a water distribution network is proved.

Improved Design of Hydraulic Circuit of Front-end Loader for Bump Shock Reduction of an Agricultural Tractor (농업용 트랙터의 프론트 로더 충격 저감을 위한 유압 회로의 설계 개선)

  • A front-end loader (FEL) mounted on an agricultural tractor is one of the most commonly used implements to mechanize routine agricultural tasks. When the FEL is used with a loaded bucket, careful operation is required to maintain safety and avoid spillage when the tractor passes a bump because a change in the gravity center of the tractor due to varied loadings can affect the stability of the tractor. Use of a boom suspension system consisting of accumulators and orifice dampers can be instrumental in reducing pitching vibrations while increasing the handling performance of the FEL-mounted tractor. The objective of this research was to reduce bump shocks by adding an orifice and a flow control valve to the original hydraulic circuit composed solely of accumulators. A simulation study was performed using the SimulationX program to investigate the effects of an accumulator and an orifice-throttle damper on bump shocks. Results showed that the peak pressure on a boom cylinder and the vertical acceleration of a bucket were significantly affected by use of both an accumulator and an orifice damper. In a field test conducted with a 75-kW tractor, the peak pressure of the boom cylinder, and the root mean square (RMS) vertical acceleration of the bucket and seat were reduced by on average, 23.0, 42.2, and 44.9% respectively, as compared to those measured with the original accumulator system, showing that an improved design for the accumulator hydraulic circuit can reduce bump shocks. Further studies are needed to design a tractor suspension system that includes the effects of cabin suspension and tires as well as dynamic analysis.

  • To run the algorithm for identifying the segments of a pipe network, the relative positional relation between nodes, pipes, and valves should be prepared as input information of a segment search algorithm. In order to more accurately identify the segments of real pipe network, pipe network GIS/CAD database that contains all isolation valves is more suitable than modeled pipe network information used for a hydraulic analysis program. In this study, we developed an algorithm that can establish the relative positional relations among node-pipe-valve suitable for pipe network segment search algorithms using GIS/CAD data of a real water supply network, and developed a MATLAB program that can implement it. The effectiveness of the developed MATLAB program was confirmed by applying it to a portion of a real municipal pipe network.
