  • There are several different types of continuously variable transmission(CVT) such as toroidal drive, belt drive, hydrostatic drive, hydro-mechanical drive. The toroidal CVT is an alternative to the manual transmission, HST, power-shift gear trans-missions or other CVTs. The driver of the CVT tractor doesn't have to operate a shia lever since the CVT controller automatically controls the speed of tractor. Thus, it is much easier to operate the CVT tractor. The fuel efficiency of CVT tractor can be increased since the controller responds quickly to the change in external load on the wheel during field operation. This study was conducted to develop the hardwares and softwares for the toroidal CVT controller which control the variator and the range clutches. The hardware consisted of a measurement system, hydraulic system and computer. And the PID controller was developed using the simulation model of the CVT control system. Through the simulation, the control coefficients for the PID controller were selected. Finally, the performance of the CVT control system was evaluated by step response test and torque response test. The settling time of the CVT control system appeared to be fast enough for field operations.

  • In this study, the results of experimental investigation on the water discharge capability of sluice caisson for tidal power plant were presented. In particular, the focus of the study was placed on the examination of change in water discharge capability of a sluice caisson according to the installation of rubble mound. For this purpose, a hydraulic experiment was carried out in an open channel flume with a great care to the measurement of discharge and water level in the flume since they greatly affects the estimation of the discharge capability of each sluice caisson. In the analysis, the experimental data of four different sluice models were used, which showed that the installation of rubble mound affects in different manner depending on each sluice caisson model. When each of the four sluice models were placed on the rubble mound respectively, the water discharge increased for one sluice caisson, whereas decreased for other three sluice caissons. Further detailed analysis is needed to quantitatively estimate the influence of installation of rubble mound on the water discharge capability of a sluice caisson.

  • Seoul subway system has been constructed to solve traffic difficulties of Seoul metropolitan, and now is the major public transportation. However, the more line has added in the system the deeper the bottom of the tunnel base. And a huge amount of groundwater along the line has seeping into the tunnel. Several subway stations has pumping system to extract the groundwater to the outside and consequently, groundwater table along the line has declined gradually. Groundwater table has dropped about 40 meters at some areas, There was some study for the proper usage of the abstracted groundwater and the project to use the groundwater has launched already by the local government. However. more serious problem is expected on quality degradation of soil and groundwater as the decline of groundwater table along the subway line. This study suggests that the detailed groundwater environmental study should be made as soon as possible for this. If there is any pollution leaking at the surface area of the groundwater depression, the pollution will be seep into the subway tunnel in some day even though the time will be different with the soil material and hydraulic characteristics of the aquifer. And the polluted area of the soil and groundwater would be enlarged along the pathway The study on possibility of the soil subsidence and reducing surface water flow in small creek were also needed. This study suggest one of the counter measurement that restoring the declined groundwater table after groundwater environmental study

  • The CUPID code is a transient, three-dimensional, two-fluid, thermal-hydraulic code designed for a component-scale analysis of nuclear reactor components. The primary objective of this study is to assess the applicability of CUPID to single-phase turbulent flow analyses of $2{\times}2$ rod bundle subchannel. The bulk velocity at the inlet varies from 1.0 m/s up to 2.0 m/s which is equivalent to the fully turbulent flow with the range of Re=12,500 to 25,000. Adiabatic single-phase flow is assumed. The velocity profile at the exit region is quantitatively compared with both experimental measurement and commercial CFD tool. Three different boundary conditions are simulated and quantitatively compared each other. The calculation results of CUPID code shows a good agreement with the experimental data. It is concluded that the CUPID code has capability to reproduce the turbulent flow behavior for the $2{\times}2$ rod bundle geometry.

  • The present study is devoted to the validation of a new method for in line electrokinetic characterisation of deposits on membrane surfaces. This method is based upon simultaneous measurements of transversal streaming potential and permeates flux at constant pressure before and during the deposit formation. Dead-end filtration experiments were conducted with negative flat membranes forming a narrow slit channel, negative hollow fiber membranes and mono-dispersed suspensions of (negatively charged) polystyrene latex and (positively charged) melamine particles at various concentrations. It was observed that the overall streaming potential coefficient increased in absolute value with the deposited latex quantity, whereas it decreased and changed of sign during the filtration of melamine suspensions. By considering a resistance-in-series model, the streaming potential coefficient of the single deposit ($SP_d$) was deduced from the electrokinetic and hydraulic measurements. The independence of $SP_d$ with respect to growth kinetics validates the measurement method and the reliability of the proposed procedure for calculating $SP_d$. It was found that $SP_d$ levelled off much more quickly when filtration was performed through the slit channel. This different behaviour could result from a non-uniform distribution of the deposit thickness along the membrane given that the position of measuring electrodes is different between the two cells.

  • In order to investigate the influence of feed water inequity on the settling performance for parallel arranged upflow sedimentation basin in domestic G_WTP(Water Treatment Plant), CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulation were employed and ADV(Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter) measurements were carried out. From the results of both CFD simulations and ADV measurements, the differences among inlet flow rates to each inlet structure make turbulent energy dissipation uneven overall sedimentation basin. Especially local velocities in the near of both side wall were observed over the design overflow rate(74.4 mm/min). Also, it was confirmed that this inequity of inlet flow would exert an serious influence on the turbidity of settled water which is out from 8 troughs. Even though experimental velocities in full scale basin about 20% higher than the simulated, the results of ADV measurement were in good accordance with those of CFD simulations.

  • Construction of underground structure requires higher standard of planning and design specifications than in surface construction. However, high construction cost and difficult working environment limit design level and construction quality. One of the most sensitive factors to be considered are infiltration and external pore-water pressures. Development of pore-water pressure may accelerate leakage and cause deterioration of the lining. In this paper, the development of pore-water pressure and its potential effect on the linings are investigated using physical model tests. A simple physical equipment model with well-defined hydraulic boundary conditions was devised. The deterioration procedure was simulated by controlling both the permeability of filters and flowrate. Development of pore-water pressure was monitored on the lining using pore pressure measurement cells. Test results identified the mechanim of pore-water pressure development on the tunnel lining which is the effect of deterioration of drainage system. The laboratory tests were simulated using coupled numerical method, and shown that the deterioration mechanism can be reproduced using coupled numerical modelling method.

  • When pile foundation constructed by driving method, it is desirable to perform monitoring and estimation of pile drivability and bearing capacity using some suitable tools. Dynamic Pile Monitoring yields information regarding the hammer, driving system, and pile and soil behaviour that can be used to confirm the assumptions of wave equation analysis. Dynamic Pile Monitoring is performed with the Pile Driving Analyser. The Pile Driving Analyser (PDA) uses wave propagation theory to compute numerous variables that fully describe the condition of the hammer-pile-soil system in real time, following each hammer impact. This approach allows immediate field verification of hammer performance, driving efficiency, and an estimate of pile capacity. The PDA has been used widely as a most effective control method of pile installations. A set of PDA test was performed at the site of Donghea-1 Gas Platform Jacket which is located east of Ulsan. The drilling core sediments of location of jacket subsoil are composed of mud and sand, silt. In this case study, the results of PDA test which was applied to measurement and estimation of large diameter open ended steel pipe pile driven by underwater hydraulic hammer, MHU-800S, at the marine sediments were summarized.

  • The present study investigates convective heat/mass transfer and flow characteristics in wavy ducts of primary surface heat exchanger. Experiments using a naphthalene technique are carried out to determine the local transfer characteristics for flow in the corrugated wall duct. The aspect ratios of the rectangular duct cross-section are 7.3, 4.7 and 1.8 with a corrugation angle of $145^{\circ}$. The Reynolds numbers, based on the duct hydraulic diameter, are ranged from 1000 to 5000. The local heat/mass transfer measurement is conducted in the spanwise directions. The results show that Tayler-Gortler vortices exist on the pressure surface. Flow separation on the suction surface appears at a high Reynolds number resulting in a sharp decrease in the local transfer rates, but relatively high transfer rates are obtained in the reattachment region.
