  • By examining the experimental results, the critical mean velocity which initiates the movement of riprap is increased with the riprap size in mean diameter, the mean diameter over water depth (d/h), Froude number (Fr), and turbulent shear velocity over critical mean velocity (u*/${\nu}$) which have great correlations among them so these parameters are adopted governing hydraulic stability for riprap. The hydraulic stability equation for riprap is developed by regression analysis. The developed equation is expanded from 0.36~0.73 m/s of experimental range to 0~5.0 m/s for the application in engineering discipline. So many useful relations among those parameters including critical mean velocity are derived by expanding to high Reynolds regions. Mean diameter calculation results by expanding to high Reynolds regions coincide with the calculations of ASCE and USBR at the range of 0~3.0 m/s and the calculation result of ASCE at the range of 3.0~5.0 m/s. The results by developed formulae coincide well with the formulae of ASCE in general and also the results by recently developed existing formulae of hydraulic stability for riprap. Thus, the developed equation has the high applicability in engineering discipline to evaluate the hydraulic stability for riprap.

  • This paper presents a procedure of calculating a safety factor of the unsaturated slope suffering from the rainfall infiltration. The process of infiltration into a slope due to rainfall and its effect on the behavior of the soil slope are examined by using a two dimensional finite element flow-deformation coupled analysis. A factor of safety is calculated at various elapsed times after the commencement of rainfall as in the following procedure. First, stresses are estimated at each Gaussian point from the coupled finite element analysis. Then, the global stress smoothing method is applied to get a continuous stress field. Based on this stress field, a factor of safety is calculated for a specified slip surface by a stress integration scheme. Then, a search strategy is used to find out a critical slip surface which is associated with the minimum factor of safety. Some numerical examples are analyzed in order to study the effect of hydraulic conductivity on the slope stability during rain-induced infiltration. According to the results, local failure zone can be formed near the slope surface due to inhomogeneous distribution of hydraulic conductivity If the failure zone is once formed, then the region extends until a large amount of slide activates. Therefore the local failure can be neglected no longer in the stability analysis.

  • Current code procedures for stress and stability analysis of new and existing concrete-gravity dams are primarily based on conventional methods of analysis. Such methods can be applied in a straightforward manner but there has been evidence that they may be inaccurate or, possibly, not conservative. This paper presents finite element modeling and analysis procedures and makes recommendations for local failure criteria at the dam-rock interface aimed at predicting more accurately the behavior of dams under hydraulic and anchoring loads.

  • Shallow slope failures in residual soil during periods of prolonged infiltration are common over the world. One of the key factors that dominate slope stability is hydrological response associated with infiltration. Hence, the soil-water profile during rainfall infiltration into unsaturated soil must me examined to evaluate slope stability. However, the hydraulic response of unsaturated soil is complicated by inherent uncertainties of the soil hydraulic properties. This study presents a methodology for assessing the effects of parameter uncertainty of hydraulic properties on the response of a analytical infiltration model using first-order reliability method. The unsaturated soil properties are considered as uncertain variables with means, standard deviations, and marginal probability distributions. Sensitivities of the probabilistic outcome to the basic uncertainties in the input random variables are provided through importance factors.

  • This study was designed to carry out studies on critical seepage velocity and critical hydraulic gradient using a piping test targeting SM and ML which are widely distributed ahead of and behind the depth of E.L(-)10m in Saemangeum area in order to examine stability of embankment built on the ground vulnerable to piping. The effects of relative densities on critical hydraulic gradient and critical velocity were also compared and analyzed using empirical formula and theoretical formula, and relative densities were set up as respectively 9%, 25%, 50%, and 75% for this experiment. As a result, for critical hydraulic gradient, most of specimens detected piping at lower values than the empirical formula of Terzaghi(1922). It is, therefore, considered that the empirical formula devised by Kalin(1977) or Hayashi(1978) is more reasonable to be conservative. It was also found that critical velocity decreased as relative density increased, and critical velocity predicted was mostly lower than the theoretical formula.

  • In this study, a hydraulic press structure has been investigated in order to enhance the precision machining and the productivity, which are generally damaged by the structural deformation from the pressure and the vibrations originated from the centrifugal forces from the rotating parts of the machine. Computer simulation based on the finite element method has been utilized for the analysis of static and dynamic characteristics to investigate each component's critical points, and to further improve the static and dynamic stabilities of a hydraulic press structure. The result shows that the deformations and the vibrations of the machine could be reduced 35% without increasing the weight of the machine.

  • A typical gantry crane is generally used to lift and transport objects in various workplaces. Most of the supporting structures in a gantry crane are fixed on the ground while the moving hoist is running overhead along the girder. There are some disadvantages to its long installation time and high installation cost. Therefore, a hydraulic based gantry crane was studied to solve the issues of typical gantry cranes. The supporting structure of the proposed gantry crane consisted of a hydraulic cylinder and telescopic boom. The dimension of the proposed gantry crane can be decreased due to its simplified structure. The analytical and theoretical methods were used to verify the structural stability of the proposed crane. The most severe load condition was considered for the analysis, and the stress and deflection of the structure are analyzed. The simulation results were as expected from the theoretical analysis. Finally, the structural and dynamic safety of the proposed hydraulic based gantry crane was validated. The obtained results can be used as guidelines in the design process of the hydraulic based gantry crane.

  • A numerical study has been peformed for evaluation of convection schemes for thermal hydraulic analysis in a liquid metal reactor Four convection schemes, HYBRID, QUICK, SMART and HLPA included in the CFX-4 code are considered. The performances of convection schemes are evaluated by applying them to the five test problems. The accuracy, stability and convergence are tested. It is shown that the HYBRID scheme is too diffusive, and the QUICK scheme exhibits overshoots and undershoots, and the SMART scheme shows convergence oscillations, and the HLPA scheme preserves the boundedness without causing convergence oscillations. The accuracies of SMART, QUICK and HLPA schemes are comparable. Thus, the use of HLPA scheme is highly recommended for thermal hydraulic analysis in a liquid metal reactor.

  • In the tidal compartment, the hydraulic head is affected by the stage of tidal rivers. For groundwater or construct works, head variation of groundwater should be considered in zone of this aquifer. A numerical analysis is performed which has an 1-dimemsional explicit finite difference scheme to show the head variation of groundwater with tidal stage and hydraulic conductivity, etc. The stability of the numerical scheme is validated by using the analytic solution. The head variation of groundwater is observed for various tidal amplititude and hydraulic conductivity, mean hydraulic gradient and pumping at any point. The range of influence corresponding to the parameters used in this study is about 60m. This value is not beyond a wave length (equation omitted). There was a pumping at a constant rate out of aquifers affected by tide and not affected by tide. Because pumping head in aquifer affected by tide is short, the expense of electric power is economized in this zone. These results are applicable to trace of contaminant transport, efficient operation of groundwater, and examination of the safety and stability of works in the tidal compartment.

  • Double Plug is constructed for preventing mixing of two different oils between two compartments in the underground oil storage cavern. And the gas and oil tightness of double plug is tested from the measurement of water leakage from double plug after the completion of double plug water filling. If water leakage is underestimated, it can increase construction cost and if water leakage is overestimated, it can increase operating cost. Therefore, optimum water leakage should be estimated to cut down the cost. In this study, hydraulic stability analysis was conducted to consider permeable properties of rock mass around double plugs and a water leak rate from double plug was estimated from the hydraulic stability analysis and case study. Finally, the reliability of estimation of water leak rate was proven by comparing estimated water leak rate with measured data.
