Phenomena induced by waves, such as overtopping, sediment transport, vibration/fluctuation and destruction of structures are highly influenced by the directionality of wave propagation. These phenomena are often dominated by non-linearity, and so hydraulic model experiments are widely adopted for stability analysis rather than numerical modeling, Thus, stability ofrubblc mound breakwaters(RMB) due to wavc directionality was experimentally investigated in this study. The incident wave angle $30^{\circ}$ was found more risky on the damage rate of RMB under directional regular waves, and the incident wave angle $40^{\circ}$ was found relatively risky under directional irregular waves. These results clarified the wave directionality effect on the stability ofRMB, These facts were found correspondent to the occurrence of the peak between $20^{\circ}$-$40^{\circ}$ with the directional frequency distribution of lIlO maximum water particle velocity.
Energy loss at manholes, often exceeding friction loss of pipes under surcharged flow, is considered as one of the major causes of inundation in urban areas. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze head loss at manholes, especially in case of surcharged flow. Hydraulic experiments were conducted with three cases. Case A is to test whether the shapes of the manholes influence head loss coefficients. Case B and C were proposed to further reduce head losses by improving the manhole hydraulic efficiency. In case B, the joining part of the pipe at both shapes of manholes is shifted from central part to side part. The test in case C is to check the average head loss coefficient by installing the side benching in square manhole, based on shifted joining part model. The average head loss coefficient for circular and square manhole on case A was 1.6. This did not show much difference of the head loss coefficients in spite of the discharge variation in this case. However, case B and C show large difference between head loss coefficients due to the strong oscillation of water surface and the horizontal swirl motion. The circular and square manholes in case B reduced the head loss by 30% and 6% than ones in case A, respectively. The average head loss coefficient for circular manhole in case B was 1.1. Case C reduced average loss coefficients of the square manhole in case A from 1.6 to 1.1. Accordingly, the circular manhole in case B and the square manhole in case C showed the effective way to reduce the head loss. These head loss coefficients could be available to apply to the urban sewer system with surcharged flow.

The small and medium sized dams have the fill dam type of a lot of occasions, which are often weak in cases of major floods. For this reason, although a countermeasure is in great need, due to the importance of the facilities and financial situations, no direct safety measures have been taken. In this study, in order to minimize construction expenditure for practical safety measures in cases of major floods, the overflow section of spillway has been analyzed focusing on how the overflow capacity will increase in the case of partially rebuilding a part of the overflow section of spillway favorable for hydraulic conditions. The labyrinth weir and movable weir was chosen for reconstruction models of the overflow section. Moreover, for analyzing the after-effects of the reconstruction, a small scale dam was temporarily chosen for various experiments such as the hydraulic model testing and the three dimension numerical evaluation through the use of Flow-3D.

Unlike the commonly used On/Off solenoid, constant attraction force which is independent of plunger displacement is a considerably important characteristic to proportional solenoid of the EPPR Valve. Attraction force uniformity is mainly affected by the internal shape design parameters. Due to a number of shape design parameters, the optimal parameter values are very complex and time consuming to find by trial and error method. Much research has been conducted or are still in progress to find the optimal parameter values by applying various optimization techniques like Genetic Algorithm, Evolution Strategy, Simulated Annealing, or the Taguchi method. In this paper, the design parameters which have primary effects on the attraction force uniformity and the average attraction force are decided by main effects analysis of Design of Experiments. Optimal parameter values are derived using finite-element analysis and a neural network model.
Soil internal erosion is a phenomenon in which fines attached to the solid skeleton are detached by fluid flow, and this continuous fine migration weakens the hydro-mechanical characteristics of the ground structure. This paper proposed governing equations for fine migration in pore spaces and its related scheme for the numerical analysis. Phase diagram for fine particles includes three different states: detached fines in the liquid phase ($c_e$), attached fines in the solid phase (${\sigma}_a$), and pore-clogged fines in the solid phase (${\sigma}_s$). Numerical formulations for finite element method are developed based on the hydraulic governing equations of pore fluid and fine migration. This study proposed a method of estimating model parameters for fine detachment, attachment, and clogging from 1D erosion experiments. And it proposed an analytical formula for hydraulic permeability function considering fine clogging. Numerical analysis of the previous erosion test developed the numerical scheme and verified the adequacy of fine migration models.

Most CFD codes, that mainly adopt the heat partitioning model as the wall boiling model, have shown low accuracies in predicting the two-phase flow parameters of subcooled boiling phenomena under low pressure conditions. In this study, a number of subcooled boiling experiments in vertical channels were analyzed using a thermal-hydraulic component code, CUPID. The prediction of the void fraction distribution using the CUPID code agreed well with experimental data at high-pressure conditions; whereas at low-pressure conditions, the predicted void fraction deviated considerably from measured ones. Sensitivity tests were performed on the submodels for major parameters in the heat partitioning model to find the optimized sets of empirical correlations suitable for low-pressure subcooled flow boiling. The effect of the K-factor on the void fraction distribution was also evaluated.

The waves are most important dynamical factors for the analyses of structural stability and topographical changes on coastal engineering field. However, wind-generated waves are very irregular in shape and transformed through refraction, diffraction and shoaling when they propagate into shallow water where bottom topography and water depth vary significantly. Recently, Vincent and Briggs (1989) reported hydraulic model experiments for the transformation of monochromatic and directionally-spread irregular waves passing over a submerged elliptical mound. They concluded that for the case of combined refraction-diffraction of waves by a shoal, the propagation characteristics of the irregular and equivalent regular wave conditions can be vastly different. On the irregular wave transformation have been made theoretical and numerical studies for several years. Although theoretical and laboratory studies on wave transformation have progressed considerably, field measurement and comparison of numerical results with related theories are still necessary for the prediction of the phenomena in reality. In this study, field measurement of both incident and transformed waves in Youngil Bay were made using various kinds of equipments, and numerical computations were made on the transformed frequency spectra of large waves propagating over the shoal using Chae and Jeong's (1992) elliptic model. It is shown that this model results agree very well with field data, and thus the applicability of the model is now validated.

In this paper, the calculation of the theoretical pressure transfer ratio due to the deformation of the thin-plate spring type check valve applied to the small piezoelectric-hydraulic pump was carried out. A thin-plate check valve is a flexible body that is deformed by an external force. The deformation of the check valve affects the rate at which the chamber pressure is transferred to the load pressure. The theoretical pressure transfer ratio for each model was calculated to compare the difference between the assumption that the thin-plate check valve is a rigid body and that of the flexible body model. The P-delta effect was considered for the calculation of the pressure transfer ratio of the flexible check valve model. In addition, a verification test for the calculated pressure transfer ratio obtained by considering the deformation of the flexible check valve model was carried out. The load pressure was measured by applying a thin-plate and ball-thin plate spring type check valves, respectively. The experimental pressure transfer ratio was calculated using the respective load pressure obtained from the experiments. The validity of the pressure transfer analysis of the check valve, taking into consideration the P-delta effect, was verified by comparing it with the theoretically calculated pressure transfer ratio.

Coastal hazards such as high waves are expected to increase due to global climate change. Therefore, we investigated new armor unit structures for disaster prevention. Recently, a concrete caisson has been used in many breakwaters against high waves in South Korea, but the demand for concrete armor unit has increased due to the high cost and many installation requirements. Though many new armor units have been developed over the world since Tetrapod in 1950, few have been used due to lack of systematical development. The representative armor units in current use have many advantages, but they cannot be applied to waves higher than 8 m. One of the new armor units developed by the design guide based on recent trend and hydraulic model experiments were conducted. The new armor unit was developed as a single layer due to cost effectiveness. However, the thickness is close to 1.5 times by overlapping the alphabet A and V. It showed higher overtopping compared to a double layer because of the thickness and the high packing density. It has a high interlocking vertically but low horizontally. It shows good stability at 9 m in model testing.

Electro-hydraulic sliding deck systems have been developed to reduce the weight for the loading of an agricultural machine. The extension length of the sliding deck was calculated according to the bed's dump angle. The optimum thickness and material were determined using a large and heavy load at acceptable angles. In addition, the degrees of freedom were calculated to obtain the input/output relationship of the system. An equation was derived using a simplified model formula for the extended length of the sliding deck according to the bed's dump angle. Also, the advance length at the maximum and minimum angles of the system was determined using numerical analysis. A down-scaled model of the system was constructed and verified by experiments. The deck was simplified to determine the material and thickness of the sliding deck and for the selection of the two representative materials. The simplified model was tested in deformation tests and stress tests with different thicknesses and materials using a structure analysis program. The analysis results show that ATOS80 is the best among the two materials for reducing the weight of the system.
