  • This paper is a numerical study on the correlation of leakage by the variation of operating temperature and orifice diameter applying to hydrostatic bearing in hydraulic actuator. Compared with Brackbill and Kandlikar experimental paper to verify the validity of the numerical analysis technique of the present study, we derive the result that the results of experiments and numerical analysis to match very well. CFD analysis program were analyzed using a commercial code FLUENT V14.5. Inlet and outlet, were applied pressure conditions, the main variables of the analysis is temperature and the orifice inner diameter. The analysis results, pressure value has decreased as the oil temperature and the orifice diameter increases.

  • This numerical study is to investigate the seepage characteristics of the side of the structure in the event of leakage from the structural connection part of the drainage structure installed through the enlarged levee, and to analyze the effect of piping on the stabilization of the levee by the lateral penetration behavior. To take into account lateral seepage behavior, 2D and 3D numerical analyses were performed on the same model, and the effect of lateral seepage was analyzed to assess the validity of the numerical analysis. As a result, when leakage occurs and a lateral seepage is considered with the gate located on the riverside land, the maximum pore water pressure near the leakage point of the structure has been reduced by half compared to the normal seepage state where no leakage occurred. Excessive variation in the pore pressure was shown at the lower part of the structure, especially if lateral seepage is not considered. As a water level rises to the high water level, it shows the hydraulic gradient was larger than the critical hydraulic gradient, which will be vulnerable to long-term piping. If a gate is located in the inland and side seepage is not considered, the effect of the seepage water such as hydraulic gradient and seepage velocity is underestimated compared with the case of considering side seepage. The maximum hydraulic gradient is relatively small when lateral seepage is neglected if a gate is located in the riverside land and there was might be a risk of piping or loss of material. In addition, the period exceeding the critical hydraulic gradient was interpreted as a short time zone. As a result, it is considered that the possibility of piping can be underestimated if side seepage is ignored.

  • Lubrication characteristics between a cylinder block and a valve plate for high speed bent-axis type hydraulic pump play an important role in volumetric efficiency and durability of pump. In this paper, a finite element method is presented for the computation of the pressure distribution between a cylinder block and a valve plate for high speed bent-axis type hydraulic pump. Also, a Runge-Kutta method is applied to simulate the cylinder block dynamics of three-degrees of freedom motion. From the results of computation, we can draw two major conclusions. One is related to the fluid film characteristics between a cylinder block and a valve plate and the other is related to the average leakage that is determined by the pressure gradient and the clearance near the discharge port. The numerical results of cylinder block dynamics were compared with the experimental results using eddy-current type gap sensors those are fixed at a pump housing.

  • Since groundwater flow in fractured rocks is controlled by the distribution of fractures irregu1arly developed in space, it is not possible to understand the hydraulic characteristics of fractured aquifers using Theis equation which is applicable only to homogeneous isotropic confined aquifer. This study deals with the theoretical background of the fractal groundwater flow model with leakage, the methodology of calculation of the hydraulic parameters, and the application of the developed model to field data. From the result of the application of the fractal model to two field data in Hongcheon and Yusung areas, we obtained a good match between theoretical curves and observed curves, with the same hydraulic parameters at the pumping well and the observation well. In the two pumping test analyses, we have determined 1.9 of the fractal dimension. This means that the dimension of groundwater flow at these two sites is slightly smaller than radial flow.

  • Among the currently available types of fuel, LNG emits a relatively small amount of nitrogen oxide and carbon dioxide when it burns in the engine. However, since LNG is a flammable material, leakage during bunkering can lead to accidents, such as fires. Therefore, it is necessary to install a remote operation emergency shut-down (ESD) valve to block the flow and leakage of LNG in an emergency situation that occurs during bunkering. The ESD valve uses a hydraulic driving device consisting of a hydraulic control valve and a hydraulic motor to control globe valve disc displacement, which regulates the flow path for LNG transfer. At this time, there are various nonlinearities in hydraulic driving devices; hence, it is necessary to design a controller with robust control performance against these uncertainties. In this study, modeling of the ESD valve was carried out, and a sliding mode controller to control the displacement of the globe valve disc was designed. As a result, it was confirmed that the designed control performance could be achieved by overcoming nonlinearity characteristics using the designed controller.

  • The failures such as leakage and burst stemmed from the repetitive motions of bending and stretching of the assembly of hydraulic hose in construction machines, agriculture machines, vehicles, and industrial heavy machines can induce big troubles. Therefore, the hydraulic hose itself eventually requires an estimation of life to operate the hydraulic system safely. In this research, we have qualitatively selected the efficient test items by the analysis of the life and potential failures of hydraulic hose. We have used more than seven of hydraulic hoses simultaneously for the research. We have applied impulse pressure and half omega flexing motions to the accelerated life testing Test results have been expressed by employing weibull plot.

  • Minimum clearance between the U-cup seal groove of a piston and a cylinder bore to ensure against extrusion of the U-cup ring and leakage of working fluids is an important design parameter for a seal designer in hydraulic cylinder applications. Therefore, typical U-cup seal of a hydraulic actuator has been analyzed as a function of a sealing gap using the nonlinear FEM software MARC. In this study, the useful design data were presented as a function of the sealing gap and the sealed hydraulic pressure.

  • Double Plug is constructed for preventing mixing of two different oils between two compartments in the underground oil storage cavern. And the gas and oil tightness of double plug is tested from the measurement of water leakage from double plug after the completion of double plug water filling. If water leakage is underestimated, it can increase construction cost and if water leakage is overestimated, it can increase operating cost. Therefore, optimum water leakage should be estimated to cut down the cost. In this study, hydraulic stability analysis was conducted to consider permeable properties of rock mass around double plugs and a water leak rate from double plug was estimated from the hydraulic stability analysis and case study. Finally, the reliability of estimation of water leak rate was proven by comparing estimated water leak rate with measured data.

  • Bio-degradable hydraulic oil using polyolester base oil is formulated for the applications of heavy duty hydraulic machineries. It has proved quality and market price competitiveness by assessment of reliability test in vehicle manufacturer and specific vehicle related institute. Contribution of bio-degradable oil keep the working environment clean and increase export competitiveness in European market. Leakage or waste of mineral types of hydraulic oils in heavy duty machineries causes pollution of river, ocean, underground water. Drinkable-water pollution is serious problem in Europe. In some European countries, using bio-degradable hydraulic oils become an obligation in heavy duty machineries. New product of bio-degradable oils satisfy the European regulations(OECD 302B) and shows excellent performance in compare with European products.

  • In order to reduce energy consumption, secondary controlled system has been applied to many types of equipments. In lifting equipments or press machines using hydraulic cylinder, a hydraulic transformer is used as a control component instead of a valve for motion control and a component for recovering potential energy of load. The transformer is combination of a variable displacement pump/motor as a secondary controlled element and a fixed displacement pump/motor. Based on the nominal model derived from mathematical model, the feedback type two-degree-of-freedom controller is designed and implemented. From simulation results, the disturbances including nonlinear friction torque, leakage flow and load force can be compensated and good positioning accuracy is obtained. It show that the proposed controller is effective.
