  • For the robot manipulator in performing precision tasks, it is indispensable that the robot utilize the various sensors for intelligence. In this paper, the hybrid position/force control method is implemented with a force/torque sensor, two personal computers, and a PUMA 560 manipulator. Two application S/W packages for edge following and peg-in-hole tasks are developed by the proposed force control algorithm. The related experimental results are then presented and discussed,

  • An approach to robot hybrid position/force control, which allows force manipulations to be realized without overshoot and overdamping while in the presence of unknown environment, is given in this paper. The manin idea is to used dynamic compensation for known robot parts and fuzzy compensation for unknown environment so as to improve system performance. The fuzzy compensation is implemented by using rule based fuzzy approach to identify the unknown environment. The establishment of proposed control system consists of following two stages. First, similar to the resovled acceleration control method, dynamic compensation and PD control based on known robot dynamics, kinematics and estimated environment stiffness is introduced. To avoid overshoot the whole control system is constructed with overdamping. In the second stage, the unknown environment stiffness is identified by using fuzzy reasoning, where the fuzzy compensation rules are obtained priori as the expression of the relationship betweenenvironment stiffness and system. Based on the simulation result, comparison between cases with or without fuzzy identifications are given, which illustrate the improvement achieced.

  • The problem of compliant motion control using a redundant manipulator is addressed in this article. Specifically, a hybrid-control type and impedance-control type controllers are extended to general redundant manipulators based on the kinematically decomposed and geometrically compatible modeling of its joint space. In the case of the hybrid controller, it leads to the linear and decoupled closed-loop dynamics in the three motion spaces, that is the motion-controlled, force-controlled, and the null motion-controlled spaces of the redundant manipulator. When the proposed impedance controller is applied, the decoupled impedance models in three motion spaces are obtained. The superiority of the proposed controllers is verified with the numerical experiments.

  • An adaptive tracking controller is presented for the vibration reduction of flexible manipulator employed in hazardous area by combining input shaping technique with sliding-mode control. The combined approach appears to be robust in the presence of severe disturbance and unknown parameter which will be estimated by least-square method in real time. In a maneuver strategy, it is found that a hybrid trajectory with a combination of low frequency mode and rigid-body mode results in better performance and is more efficient than the traditional rigid body trajectory alone which many researchers have employed. The feasibility of the adaptive tracking control approach is demonstrated by applying it to the simplified model of robot system. For the applications of the proposed technique to realistic systems, several requirements are discussed such as control stability and large system order resulted from finite element modeling.

  • The present paper studies a robot manipulator's contact tasks on the uncertain flexible objects. The flexible object's distributed parameter model is approximated into a lumped "position state-varying" model. By using the well-known nonlinear feedback compensation, the robot's control space is decomposed into the position control subspace and the object's torque control subspace. The optimal state feedback is designed for the position loop, and the robot's contact force is controlled through controlling the resultant torque on the object using model-reference simple adaptive control. Experiments of a PUMA robot interacting with an aluminum plate show the effectiveness of this control approach. approach.

  • In this paper, compliant motion control of a manipualator in manipulator is proposed by using the self-tuning adaptive controller. Compliant motion is needed in order to applicated to complicated and accurate fields such as assembly operation in which several parts are matched. For a control method of compliant motion hybrid control is used so forces and position control are proposed selectively through a closed feedback loop. By contacting with environment, the uncertainties higher. Self-tuning controller which adapts to variable dynamic response is applied to compliant motion control in order to satisfy the desired operation. The applicability of the suggested algorithm was confirmed by simulation of the contour tracking task of four joint manipulator.

  • For free motions, vibration suppression of flexible manipulators has been one of the hottest research topics. However, for constrained motions, a little effort has been devoted for vibration suppression control. Using the dependency of elastic deflections of links on contact force under static conditions, vibrations for constrained planar two-link flexible manipulators have been suppressed successfully by controlling the contact force. However, for constrained spatial multi-link flexible manipulators, the vibrations cannot be suppressed by only controlling the contact force. So, the aim of this paper is to clarify the vibration mechanism of a constrained, multi-DOF, flexible manipulator and to devise the suppression method. We apply a concise hybrid position/force control scheme to control a flexible manipulator modeled by lumped-parameter modeling method. Finally, a comparison between simulation and experimental results is presented to show the performance of our method.

  • Up to now, hybrid torque/position control of robot manipulator have been researched under the assumption that link mass and/or load are known. This paper proposes a torque and position control method under unknown mass of links or load of a robot manipulator and the method extend control in joint space to control in operational space. In the method, known parameters are used to estimate unknown parameter. We illustrate the theory with some simulations and show that the result is effective.

  • In this paper, we propose a new motion and force control methodology for constrained robots as an approach of hybrid discrete-continuous dynamical system. The hybrid dynamic system modeling of robotic manipulation tasks with constraints is presented, and the hybrid system control architecture for unconstrained and constrained motion system with parametric uncertainties is synthesized. The optimal reference stiffness of robot manipulator is generated by the hybrid automata as a discrete state system and the control behavior of constrained system which has poor modeling information and time-varying constraint function is improved by the constrained robots as a continuous state system. The performance of the proposed constrained motion control system is successfully evaluated via experimental studies to the constraint tasks.
