As a coating material for loudspeaker dampers, resilient polyurethane/epoxy hybrid resins were synthesized to replace conventional phenol resin and examined the physical properties, which are not only environmentally friendly but also not harmful to human. Five types of polyurethane resins were synthesized in the step-shot method using methylene diisocyanate, three polyols such as poly tetramethylene ether glycol(PTMEG, MW:2000), poly(1,4-buthylene adipate(PBAP, MW:2000), and poly carbonatediol(PCD, MW:2000), and three chain extenders such as ethylene glycol(EG), neopentyl glycol(NPG), and 1,4-buthandiol(1,4-BD). The five types of synthesized polyurethane resins and commercially available bisphenol A type epoxy resin were blended in weight ratios of 90:10, 70:30, and 50:50 to synthesize 15 types of polyurethane/epoxy hybrid resins. Among the polyurethane resins, the one that was synthesized using PCD and 1,4-BD showed excellent tensile strength, 100% modulus, low extension, and relatively high viscosity. Polyurethane/epoxy hybrid resins with higher epoxy resin contents showed better thermal properties and water resistance while those with higher polyurethane contents showed higher flexibility. The polyurethane/epoxy hybrid resin made by blending the polyurethane based on PCD and 1,4-BD with a bisphenol A type epoxy resin in a weight ratio of 70:30 was identified to be the most suitable to be used in speaker dampers.
In recent years, high-rise buildings received a renewed interest as a means by which technical and economic advantages can be achieved, especially in areas of high population density. Taller and taller buildings are being built worldwide. These types of buildings present an asset and typically are built not to fail under wind loadings. The increase in a building's height results in increased flexibility, which can lead to significant vibrations, especially at top floors. Such oscillations can magnify the overall loads and can be annoying to the top floors' occupants. This paper shows that increased stiffness in high-rise buildings may not be a feasible solution and may not be used for the design for comfort and serviceability. High-rise buildings are unique, and a vibration control system for a certain building may not be suitable for another. Even for the same building, its behavior in the two lateral directions can be different. For this reason, the current study addresses the application of hybrid tuned mass and magneto-rheological (TM/MR) dampers that can work for such types of buildings. The proposed control scheme shows its effectiveness in reducing floors' accelerations for both comfort and serviceability concerns. Also, a dissipative analysis carried out shows that the MR dampers are working within the possible range of optimum performance. In addition, the design loads are dramatically reduced, creating more resilient and sustainable buildings. The purpose of this paper is to stimulate, shape, and communicate ideas for emerging control technologies that are essential for solving wind related problems in high-rise buildings, with the objective to build the more resilient and sustainable infrastructure and to optimally retrofit existing structures.

The Structures or buildings nowadays draw more complexity in design due to space limitation and other factor that affect the height and dimensions, that results to instability. So the various methods have been carried out to improve the safety factor from an earthquake or a boom until recently. But, it is very hard to get model precisely because these structures are the non-linear and multi-variable systems. For this reason, we developed the active control system that is applied the adaptive control method on the U type Tuned Liquid Damper(TLD) passive control system. It is proven that the proposed active control strategy of the plate carrying U type TLD system is the more effective control method to suppress the vibration of the structure. The entire hybrid control system is composed of the actuator acted in the opposite direction of the TLD system's motion direction and the active control device with an air pressure adjuster. This paper proposed the adaptive control methods to improve the problem of U type TLD system which is used widely for the passive control of the building. And it is proved by the simulation. In advanced, it is developed the pressure control method that is improved the hybrid controller's performance by using air chamber pressure controller. These methods take the advantage of the decrease of the maximum displacement by using the controller as soon as the impact is loaded. This is a very important element for the safety design and economic design of structures.
Recently, number of smart material are investigated and widely used in civil construction and other industries. Present study investigates the application of smart semi-active piezoelectric friction damper (PFD) made with piezoelectric material for the seismic control of the horizontally curved bridge isolated with lead rubber bearing (LRB). The main aim of the study is to investigate the effectiveness of hybrid system and to find out the optimum parameters of PFD for seismic control of the curved bridge. The selected curved bridge is a continuous three-span concrete box girder supported on pier and rigid abutment. The PFD is located between the deck and abutments or piers in chord and radial directions. The bridge is excited with four different earthquake ground motions with all three components (i.e. two horizontal and a vertical) having different characteristics. It is observed that the use of semi-active PFD with LRB is quite effective in controlling the response of the curved bridge as compared with passive system. The incorporation of the smart damper requiring small amount of energy in addition with an isolation system can be used for effective control the curved bridge against the dynamic loading.
This paper focuses on developing a new configuration on magnetorheological (MR) brake damper as prosthetic knee. Prosthetic knee uses magnetic fields to vary the viscosity of the MR fluid, and thereby its flexion resistance. Exerted transmissibility torque of the knee greatly depends on the magnetic field intensity in the MR fluid. In this study a rotary damper using MR fluid is addressed in which a single rotary disc will act as a brake while MR fluid is activated by magnetic field in different walking gait. The main objective of this study is to investigate a prosthetic knee with one activating rotary disc to accomplish necessary braking torque in walking gait via T-shaped drum with arc surface boundary and implementing of Newton's equation of motion to derive generated torque at the inner surface of the rotary drum. For this purpose a novel configuration of a T-shaped drum based on the effects of a material deformation process is proposed. In this new design, the T-shaped disc will increase the effective areas of influences in between drum and MR fluid together and the arc wall crushes the particles chains (fibrils) of the MR fluid together instead of breaking them via strain in a conventional MR brake. To verify the proposed MR brake, results of the proposed and conventional MR brakes are compared together and demonstrated that the resisting torque of the proposed MR brake is almost two times greater than that of the conventional brake.

Many types of tuned mass dampers (TMDs), such as active TMDs, multiple TMDs, hybrid TMDs etc., have been studied to effectively reduce the dynamic responses of a structure subjected to various types of dynamic loads. In this study, we replace a passive damper by a semi-active tuned mass damper to improve the control performance of conventional TMDs (STMD). An idealized variable damping device is used as semi-active dampers. These semi-active dampers can change the properties of TMDs in real time based on the dynamic responses of a structure. The control performance of STMD is investigated with respect to various types of excitation by numerical simulation. Groundhook control algorithm is used to appropriately modulate the damping force of semi-active dampers. The control effectiveness between STMD and a conventional passive TMD, both under harmonic and random excitations, is evaluated and compared for a single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) structure. Excitations are applied to the structure as a dynamic force and ground motion, respectively. The numerical studies showed that the control effectiveness of STMD is significantly superior to that of the passive TMD, regardless of the type of excitations.

The most effective passive vibration control and seismic resistance options in a reinforced concrete (RC) high-rise building (HRB) are the base isolation and the tuned mass damper (TMD) system. Many options, which may be suitable or not for different soil types, with different types of bearing systems, like rubber isolator, friction pendulum isolator and tension/compression isolator, are investigated to resist the base straining actions under five different earthquakes. TMD resists the seismic response, as a control system, by reducing top displacement or the total movement of the structure. Base isolation and TMDs work under seismic load in a different way, so the combination between base isolation and TMDs will reduce the harmful effect of the earthquakes in an effective and systematic way. In this paper, a comprehensive study of the combination of TMDs with three different base-isolator types for three different soil types and under five different earthquakes is conducted. The seismic response results under five different earthquakes of the studied nine RC HRB models (depicted by the top displacement, base shear force and base bending moment) are compared to show the most suitable hybrid passive vibration control system for three different soil types.

This paper presents an optimal design method of a hybrid structural control system considering multi-hazard. Unlike a typical structural control system in which one system is designed for one specific type of hazard, a simultaneous optimal design method for both active and passive control systems is proposed for the mitigation of seismic and wind induced vibration responses of structures. As a numerical example, an optimal design problem is illustrated for a hybrid mass damper(HMD) and 30 viscous dampers which are installed on a 30 story building structure. In order to solve the optimization problem, a self-adaptive Harmony Search(HS) algorithm is adopted. Harmony Search algorithm is one of the meta-heuristic evolutionary methods for the global optimization, which mimics the human player's tuning process of musical instruments. A self-adaptive, dynamic parameter adjustment algorithm is also utilized for the purpose of broad search and fast convergence. The optimization results shows that the performance and effectiveness of the proposed system is superior with respect to a reference hybrid system in which the active and passive systems are independently optimized.

In this paper, an experimental real-time hybrid method, which implements the earthquake response control of a building structure with a TLD(Tuned Liquid Damper) by using only a TLD as an experimental part, is proposed and is experimentally verified through a shaking table test. In the proposed methodology, the whole building structure with a TLD is divided into the upper TLD and the lower structural parts as experimental and numerical substructures, respectively. The control force acting between their interface is measured with a shear-type load-cell which is mounted on the shaking table. The shaking table vibrates the upper experimental TLD with the response calculated from the numerical substructure, which is subjected to the excitations of the measured interface control force at its top story and an earthquake input at its base. The experimental results show that the conventional method, in which both a TLD and a building structure model are physically manufactured and are tested, can be replaced by the proposed methodology with a simple experimental installation and a good accuracy for evaluating the control performance of a TLD.
Base isolation is a quite practical control strategy for enhancing the response of structural systems induced by strong ground motions. Due to the dynamic effects of base isolation systems, reduction in the interstory drifts of the superstructure is often achieved at the expense of high base displacement level, which may lead to instability of the structure or non-practical designs for the base isolators. To reduce the base displacement, several hybrid structural control strategies have been studied over the past decades. This study investigates a particular strategy that employs Tuned Mass Dampers (TMDs) for improving the performance of base-isolated structures and unlike previous studies, specifically focuses on the effectiveness of this hybrid control strategy in structures that are equipped with nonlinear base isolation systems. To consider the nonlinearities of base isolation systems, a Bouc-Wen model is selected and nonlinear dynamic OpenSees models are used to perform several time-history simulations in time and frequency domains. Through these numerical simulations, the effects of several parameters such as the fundamental period of the structure, dynamic properties of the TMD and isolation systems and properties of the input ground motion on the behaviour of TMD-structure-base isolation systems are examined. The results of this study provide a better insight into the performance of linear shear-story structures with nonlinear base isolators and show that there are many scenarios in which TMDs can still improve the performance of these systems.
