  • An increase of the number of the real time applications and the Internet hosts make the Internet architecture changed. Current Internet architecture has some problems to process the real time traffics. To solve these problem, a new Internet architecture is proposed as the Integrated Service model. In the current Internet, as multicast protocols, the QoS multicast and the best-effort multicast have been studied in their separate network environments. But, the Integrated Service Packet Network is a heterogeneous network composed of the QoS delivery domain and the best-effort delivery domain. Thus, those separated multicast protocols have limitations in an ISPN. In this paper, we propose a multicast protocol for the ISPN with the QoS and the best-effort multicasting, and analyze the performance of this protocol. As a result, we find that the packet losses are same for hybrid multicast and best-effort multicast when the bandwidth is sufficient. But, if there exist some background traffics, the hybrid multicast has less packet loss than of the best-effort multicast.

  • In this paper, we propose a multicast routing scheme for an efficient and reliable support of multicast service to mobile hosts in IPv6 based networks. The purpose of this paper is to develop an algorithm to reduce both the number of multicast tree reconstruction and the multicast service disrupt time using the RSVP scheme. The proposed multicast routing scheme is a hybrid method using the advantages of the hi-directional tunneling and the remote subscription proposed by the IETF Mobile IP working group. The proposed scheme satisfies the maximum tolerable transfer delay time and supports the maximum tunneling service. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme has better performance in the number of multicast tree reconstruction and the time of multicast service disrupt than the previous schemes does.

  • This paper describes Internet multicast routing protocols over MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching) networks. Internet multicast routing protocols are divided into 3 categories in terms of tree types and tree characteristics: a shortest path tree, a shared tree and hybrid tree types. MPLS should support various multicast mechanisms because of extremely different IP multicast architectures, such as uni-/bi-directional link, Flooding/prune tree maintenance mechanism, the existence of different tree types with the same group, etc. There are so many problems over MPLS multicast that the solutions can't be easily figured out. In this paper, we make a few assumptions on which the solutions of IP multicast routing protocols over MPLS networks are given. A broadcasting label is defined for the shortest path tree types. Cell interleaving problems of the shared tree types is solved by using block-based transmission mechanism. Finally, the existing hybrid-type multicast routing protocol is reasonably modified to support MPLS multicast.

  • It is important to constantly provide service in real-time multimedia applications using multicast. Transmission path reconstruction occurs in hybrid multicast using Internet Protocol (IP) multicast and ALM in order to adapt the network status to things like congestion. So, there is a problem in which real-time QoS is reduced, caused by an increase in end-to-end delay. In this paper, we want to solve this problem through multi-layer transmission path construction. In the proposed method, we deploy the control server and application layer overlay host (ALOH) in each multicast domain (MD) for hybrid multicast construction. After the control server receives the control information from an ALOH that joins the MD, it makes a group based on the hop count and sends it to the ALOH in each MD. The ALOH in the MD performs the role of sending the packet to another ALOH and constructs the multi-layered transmission path in order of priority by using control information that is received from the control server and based on the delay between neighboring ALOHs. When congestion occurs in, or is absent from, the ALOH in the upper MD, the ALOH selects the path with the highest priority in order to reduce end-to-end delay. Simulation results show that the proposed method could reduce the end-to-end delay to less than 289 ms, on average, under congestion status.

  • This paper proposes a dynamic hybrid patching technique that can improve the performance of VOD systems by adopting the advantages of both greedy patching and grace patching to use a VOD server's limited network-I/O bandwidth. The proposed technique uses grace patching to the requests for the videos, arrival intervals of which are smaller than the size of patching window, and uses greedy patching to the rest requests. In addition, proposed patching technique expands the latest particular patching multicast into a regular multicast for a new request. In result, the patching multicast data for the new request can be the data from the beginning to the skew point of the video and the holding time of a dispatched channel can exceedingly decrease. Simulation results confirm that the proposed technique is better than grace patching in terms of defection rate and average service latency.

  • In designing a video-on-demand (VoD) system, the major challenge may be how to reduce the channels concurrently used maintaining the client's waiting time. For this reason, the various architectures which integrate the multicast streams with the unicast streams were suggested in order to improve channel efficiency in recent years. In combining multicast with unicast, the ways to group the unicast channels together are important so that clients can share the multicast transmission channels. This paper proposes a hybrid video-on-demand system which gathers the unicast channels in new ways and shares multicast transmission channels efficiently by using dynamic channel allocation architecture. The numerical results demonstrate that the proposed architecture in some case achieves performance gain of $551{\%}$ compared to existing architecture. This paper presents procedure of channel release and reuse, performance analysis, and simulation results of the dynamic channel allocation architecture.

  • This paper proposes a cross-layer design combining adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) with truncated hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) for wireless multicast transmission, in order to increase the spectral efficiency while meeting the target quality-of-service (QoS). In the design, we provide the selection criterion of AMC so as to satisfy the target packet error rate (PER) of all users when the multicast data is received through the common channel and the number of retransmission is limited by the delay constraint of the service. The analytically derived results show that the cross-layer design using HARQ provides a better spectral efficiency than the AMC without HARQ by allowing retransmission and code combining. It is also observed that the design for multicast outperforms that for unicast in the mid to high signal-to-noise ratio region.

  • In this paper, we propose a non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) method based on channel alignment to simultaneously transmit multiple unicast and multicast streams in frequency-efficient manner. In this method, all receivers in a multicast cluster use the receive beamforming vectors that align their channels, and the base station uses the aligned channel information to design the transmit beamforming vectors that eliminate interference between multicast clusters. Using the effective receive channel information combined with the transmit beamforming vectors, unicast receivers design their own receive beamforming vectors that eliminate interference between unicast receivers. Since the proposed method effectively eliminates the interference, it achieves a higher sum rate than the existing orthogonal multiple access (OMA) method in high SNR regions. In addition, we present a hybrid method that exploits the benefits of the proposed NOMA method and the existing OMA method. Depending on the channel state, the hybrid method adaptively employs the existing OMA method, which improves the received signal power, in low SNR regions and the proposed NOMA method, which effectively eliminates the interference, in high SNR regions, thereby achieving a good sum rate over the entire SNR region.
