  • Background: The sagittal alignment of the spine and pelvis is not only closely related to the overall posture of the body but also to the evaluation and treatment of spine disease. In the last few years, the EOS imaging system, a new low-dose radiation X-ray device, became available for sagittal alignment assessment. However, there has been little research on the reliability of EOS. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the intrarater and interrater reliability of EOS for the sagittal alignment assessment of the spine and pelvis. Methods: Records of 46 patients were selected from the EOS recording system between November 2016 and April 2017. The exclusion criteria were congenital spinal anomaly and deformity, and previous history of spine and pelvis operation. Sagittal parameters of the spine and pelvis were measured by three examiners three times each using both manual and EOS methods. Means comparison t-test, Pearson bivariate correlation analysis, and reliability analysis by intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) for intrarater and interrater reliability were performed using R package "irr." Results: We found excellent intrarater and interrater reliability of EOS measurements. For intrarater reliability, the ICC ranged from 0.898 to 0.982. For interrater reliability, the ICC ranged from 0.794 to 0.837. We used a paired t-test to compare the values measured by manual and EOS methods: there was no statistically significant difference between the two methods. Correlation analysis also showed a statistically significant positive correlation. Conclusions: EOS showed excellent reliability for assessment of the sagittal alignment of the spine and pelvis.

  • Unexpected anomalies in the geotechnical investigation at design stage may cause problems during tunnel excavation. Therefore, it is important to predict the ground condition ahead of a tunnel face during tunnel excavation in order to prevent tunnel collapse. Despite the fulfillment of an electrical resistivity survey at the tunnel face, the existing electrical resistivity survey program can produce distorted results by the limitation of tunnel modelling. In this background, this study develops a modelling program for an electrical resistivity survey considering the tunnel shape. Numerical simulation and inverse calculation were performed for the electrical resistivity survey in the tunnel using the developed program. As a result, it was proved that the developed program could predict accurately the anomalous object's location and condition ahead of the tunnel face.

  • On plane strain condition, many researchers have investigated the earth pressure according to the shape of wall, and standardized method has been applied to the design of the retaining wall. But on cylindrical diaphragm wall, at-rest earth pressure has been generally used. Even though this method is on conservative side, it may lead to over-design. In this paper, the application of convergence confinement method to the calculation of the earth pressure acting on the cylindrical diaphragm wall of a shaft was suggested. In addition, a model test was carried out to investigate the distributions of earth pressure. Model test results show that the earth pressures of diaphragm wall are about 1.4 times larger than active earth pressure and about 0.8 times less than at-rest earth pressure.

  • High-quality and high-phytonutrient watermelon fruits have strong market opportunities besides their health related benefits. Hence, investigating quality and nutritional related traits of watermelon genetic resources could provide important baseline data in breeding for increased lycopene content thereby increasing the marketability of watermelon. To this end, we have examined some fruit morphological traits and lycopene content of 105 genetic resources. The morphological characters were recorded on the field and inside laboratory and lycopene was measured using spectrophotometric and HPLC methods. Watermelon fruits have shown a diverse morphological characters. Red and pink fleshed fruits dominated in the entire collections. Fruits with higher thickness of rind were found to exhibit less soluble solid content (SSC). Korean origin fruits were characterized by intermediate SSC while USA, RUS, TJK, TKM, TWN, and URY originated fruits had the highest SSC. The lycopene content varied between 41.37 and 182.82 ㎍/g, 2.81 and 163.72 ㎍/g, and 3.54 and 255.47 ㎍/g using HPLC, UV-Vis, and microplate reader instrumnets, respectively. Red- and pink-fleshed fruits had the highest levels of lycopene content compared to the yellow- and orange-fleshed. Lycopene content had a significant positive correlation with SSC, however, no correlations were detected between lycopene and other quantitative fruit morphological characters.

  • Ras-related (Rab) proteins, integral members of the monomeric G-protein family, play a pivotal role in regulating intracellular vesicular transport. These proteins contribute to male reproductive processes, specifically in acrosome formation, exocytosis, and sperm motility. Although a prior study indicated a correlation between Rab3A and sperm motility, including motion kinematic parameters such as mean dance, this association has only been explored within a limited sample size. Therefore, further verification is required to confirm the correlation between Rab3A and sperm motility parameters. In the present study, Rab3A expression, sperm motility, and motion kinematic parameters were analyzed in 150 boar spermatozoa. Additionally, correlations between Rab3A expression and sperm kinematic characteristics were evaluated statistically. The results revealed significant associations between Rab3A protein expression levels and various motion kinematic parameters. Specifically, Rab3A levels exhibited positive correlations with average path velocity (p<0.05), mean amplitude of lateral head displacement (p<0.05), and curvilinear velocity (p<0.01). Consequently, it is proposed that Rab3A protein plays a crucial role in male fertility through its correlation with sperm kinematic characteristics, making it a potential marker for sperm motility-related assessments.

  • Air samples were collected at various altitudes (from 165 to 1153 m) to observe vertical distribution of particulate PAHs concentrations using a very compact and light particle sampling package developed by Eun et al.(2013). TD-GC-MS developed by Hwang et al.(2014) was applied to PAHs analysis for effective analysis of PAHs contained trace amounts in the samples. The ranges of total PAHs concentrations were from 6.95 to $96.0ng\;m^{-3}$ on the ground and from 3.75 to $21.74ng\;m^{-3}$ at high altitude, respectively. All of particulate PAHs concentrations measured on the ground were higher than those measured at high altitude, while, the profile of individual PAH compounds between the ground and high altitude samples were similar. It means the distribution of particulate PAHs concentrations at high altitude were affected by the emission of PAHs emitted from ground.

  • Most of the surveys of periphyton carried out for environmental and ecosystem health assessment of streams have considered the impact made on their fixative substrates (stones, rocks, sand, silt, clay and other abiotic matters), but there has been virtually no research that considered moving substrates. This study attempted to make an analysis and assessment of the habitat environments of the microalgae attached to the skin surfaces of fish living in small streams, with a focus on their species composition and community structure. The dominant fish in the this survey were Zacco temmincki and Zacco platypus, which are usually found in the streams, and rivers, and they accounted for 62% and 19%, respectively, in relative abundance. Substrates of fish, a representative organism with the trait of moving a long distance, show a marked contrast with those of organisms fixed at a certain place. Characteristics of both the upstream and the downstream reach well reflected in the microalgae attached to the skin surface of fishes, of which diatoms took the major composition. The result of this observation is considered to be useful to provide basic data in assessment of stream health. Also it may be suggested as a biological tool for the assessment of aquatic environment in the future.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the perceptions of the foodservice industry workers in regard to the use of seasonings and sweeteners in the restaurants. Questionnaires were distributed to 902 foodservice workers of various restaurants. Participants were questioned on their perceptions of both natural and artificial seasonings & sweeteners. Furthermore, they were asked to respond to questions regarding the need of public education and information about the use of seasonings and sweeteners, along with the demographic information. The results showed that 65.7% of respondents used both the artificial seasoning and artificial sweeteners, while 9.9% of respondents used only natural seasonings and sweeteners. The restaurant employees answered that they have tried to reduce the use of artificial seasonings and sweeteners(3.69/5 point). Some of the respondents reported that they have tried to increase the used of natural seasonings and sweeteners(3.54/5 point). There were significant differences in the respondents' perceptions and attitudes on the seasonings and sweeteners by the restaurant type(p<0.05). The respondents perceived the need for education on the safety of artificial seasonings and sweeteners(3.71/5point) and the production process of natural seasonings(3.75/5 point). There was no significant difference in the respondents' perceptions on the need for education of the seasonings and sweeteners by the restaurant type. The findings suggest that education regarding the use of artificial seasoning and artificial sweeteners, as well as cooking methods that use natural seasonings, is needed to reduce the use of artificial seasonings and sweeteners in restaurants.
