In developing the HMI(Human-Machine Interface) evaluation system for the IVNS(In-Vehicle Navigation System), design guidelines and evaluation methods are the most crucial problems for its use and efficiency. As the part of this system, focused on the final product of the database, subjective mental workload assessment is seriously considered to evaluate the driver's own driving task using the IVNS. This paper suggests the methodology for the ergonomic assessment of the IVNS that corresponds to the subjective measurement of the driver's mental workload by rating his or her own driving task. For this approach, Revision of NASA-Task Load Index(RNASA-TLX) was developed which translated and revised the version of NASA-TLX that is generally accepted an efficient and powerful method for evaluating the in-vehicle information systems. To verify the RNASA-TLX, an experiment was conducted in a real road situation, because the result of the laboratory approach is uncertain and has the differences from the real road test.
Objective: The aim of this study was to develop the assistive device for accelerator and brake pedals using bio-signals from the prefrontal lobe in the driving simulator and evaluate its performance. Background: There is lack of assistive devices for the driving in peoples with disabilities in Korea. However, if bio-signals and/or brain waves are used at driving a car, the people with serious physical limitations can improve their community mobility. Method: 15 subjects with driver's license participated in this study for experiment of driving performance evaluation in the simulator. Each subject drove the simulator the same course 10 times in three separated groups which use different interface controllers to accelerate and brake: (1) conventional pedal group, (2) joystick group and (3) bio-signal group(horizontal quick glance of the eyes and clench teeth). All experiments were recorded and the driving performances were evaluated by three inspectors. Results: Average score of bio-signal group for the driving in the simulator was increased 3% compared with the pedal group and was increased 9% compared with the joystick group(p<0.01). The subjects using bio-signals was decreased 44% in number of deduction compared with others because the device had the built-in modified cruise control. Conclusion: The assistive device for accelerator and brake pedals using bio-signals showed significantly better performance than using general pedal and a joystick interface(p<0.01). Application: This study can be used to design adaptive vehicle for driving in people with disabilities.

Conclusion: A study for the coordination of muscle activity, control of motion and prevention of injury should be sought by developing shoes of eco-friendly materials, and scientific evidence such as physical aspects, materials, floor shapes and friction should be supported. Second, a study on elite athletes in various sports is needed based on functional shoes using new materials to improve their performance along with cooperation in muscle activities and prevention of injury. Third, various information and energy production are possible in real time through human behavioral information, and the application of Human Machine Interface (HMI) technology through shoe-sensor-human interaction should be explored.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate smart secondary controls using iPad for the drivers with physical disabilities in the driving simulator. Background: The physically disabled drivers face problems in the operation of secondary control devices that accept a control input from a driver for the purpose of operating the subsystems of a motor vehicle. Many of conventional secondary controls consist of small knobs or switches that physically disabled drivers have difficulties in grasping, pulling or twisting. Therefore, their use while driving might increase distraction and workload because of longer operation time. Method: We examined the operation time of conventional and smart secondary controls, such as hazard warning, turn signal, window, windshield wiper, headlights, automatic transmission and horn. The hardware of smart secondary control system was composed of iPad, wireless router, digital input/output module and relay switch. We used the STISim Drive3 software for driving test, customized Labview and Xcode programs for interface control of smart secondary system. Nine subjects were involved in the study for measuring operation time of secondary controls. Results: When the driver was in the stationary condition, the average operation time of smart secondary devices decreased 32.5% in the normal subjects (p <0.01), 47.4% in the subjects with left hemiplegic disabilities (p <0.01) and 38.8% in the subjects with right hemiplegic disabilities (p <0.01) compared with conventional secondary devices. When the driver was driving for the test in the simulator, the average operation time of smart secondary devices decreased 36.1% in the normal subjects (p <0.01), 41.7% in the subjects with left hemiplegic disabilities (p <0.01) and 34.1% in the subjects with right hemiplegic disabilities (p <0.01) compared with conventional secondary devices. Conclusion: The smart secondary devices using iPad for people with hemiplegic disabilities showed significant reduction of operation time compared with conventional secondary controls. Application: This study can be used to design secondary controls for adaptive vehicles and to improve the quality of life of the people with disabilities.

Monitoring and control of the greenhouse environment play a decisive role in greenhouse crop production processes. The network system for greenhouse control was developed by using recent technologies of networking and wireless communications. In this paper, a remote monitoring and control system for greenhouse using a smartphone and a computer with internet has been developed. The system provides real-time remote greenhouse integrated management service which collects greenhouse environment information and controls greenhouse facilities based on sensors and equipments network. Graphical user interface for an integrated management system was designed with bases on the HMI and the experimental results showed that a sensor data and device status were collected by integrated management in real-time. Because the sensor data and device status can be displayed on a web page, transmitted using the server program to remote computer and mobile smartphone at the same time. The monitored-data can be downloaded, analyzed and saved from server program in real-time via mobile phone or internet at a remote place. Performance test results of the greenhouse control system has confirmed that all work successfully in accordance with the operating conditions. And data collections and display conditions, event actions, crops and equipments monitoring showed reliable results.

New equipment that is useful for driving is developing every day. Navigation is one of the most popular equipment among them. Telematics market including navigation is getting bigger and bigger. However, traffic accident from using telematics equipment is also increasing. Drivers may lose glance using navigation, and driver's workload will also grow by driver's distraction. This thesis is base on the study about the influence on the drivers' workload by using the telematics equipment. Previous study of drivers' workload used psychological method and behavior test method, but it was less connection with telematics equipment. The main object of this thesis is measuring the workload according to the telematics usage by HMI (Human Machine Interface) in the virtual reality. Therefore, we developed GPS simulator, and made an experiment of whether using the navigation or not on the highway and an experiment of the location of navigation in downtown. The result of these experiments is that workload when driver used navigation was higher than when driver didn't use navigation. In addition, workload was different according to the location, and HUD (Head-Up Display) was especially higher than other locations but also its information delivery ability was the best.

Recently, many human-friendly communication methods have been studied for human-machine interface(HMI) without using any physical devices. One of them is the vision-based gesture recognition that this paper deals with. In this paper, we define some gestures for interaction with objects in a predefined virtual world, and propose an efficient method to recognize them. For preprocessing, we detect and track the both hands, and extract their silhouettes from the low-resolution hand images captured by a webcam. We modeled skin color by two Gaussian distributions in RGB color space and use blob-matching method to detect and track the hands. Applying the foodfill algorithm we extracted hand silhouettes and recognize the hand shapes of Thumb-Up, Palm and Cross by detecting and analyzing their modes. Then, with analyzing the context of hand movement, we recognized five predefined one-hand or both-hand gestures. Assuming that one main user shows up for accurate hand detection, the proposed gesture recognition method has been proved its efficiency and accuracy in many real-time demos.

In this paper, the diagnostic expert system for silicone oil-filled transformer is developed using dissolved gas analysis(DGA). There are many diagnostic methods for diagnostic oil-immersed transformer. But DGA is used to the proposed expert system since it has been verified that DGA is very efficient diagnostic method for transformer. In addition, it is resonable that fuzzy rule, degree of inclusion and fuzzy measure must be considered to handle the uncertainty nature of gas boundary and rules. The proposed expert system consists of knowledge base module, inference engine module and human-machine interface(HMI) module. The knowledge base module consists of the knowledge using the rule. The inference engine module is used to the fuzzy rule. The history of the transformer gas data is managed by the database. the effect of the proposed expert system is verified by case studies.
