The visual sensing of human hands plays an important part in many man-machine interaction/interface systems. Most existing visionbased hand detection techniques depend on the color cues of human skin. The RGB color image from a vision sensor is often transformed to another color space as a preprocessing of hand detection because the color space transformation is assumed to increase the detection accuracy. However, the actual effect of color space transformation has not been well investigated in literature. This paper discusses a comparative evaluation of the pixel classification performance of hand skin detection in four widely used color spaces; RGB, YIQ, HSV, and normalized rgb. The experimental results indicate that using the normalized red-green color values is the most reliable under different backgrounds, lighting conditions, individuals, and hand postures. The nonlinear classification of pixel colors by the use of a multilayer neural network is also proposed to improve the detection accuracy.
Understanding of human emotion has a high importance in interaction between human and machine communications systems. The most expressive and valuable way to extract and recognize the human's emotion is by facial expression analysis. This paper presents and implements an automatic extraction and recognition scheme of facial expression and emotion through still image. This method has three main steps to recognize the facial emotion: (1) Detection of facial areas with skin-color method and feature maps, (2) Creation of the Bezier curve on eyemap and mouthmap, and (3) Classification and distinguish the emotion of characteristic with Hausdorff distance. To estimate the performance of the implemented system, we evaluate a success-ratio with emotional face image database, which is commonly used in the field of facial analysis. The experimental result shows average 76.1% of success to classify and distinguish the facial expression and emotion.
Alpha-hydroxy acid(AHA) are used in cosmetic products as a pH adjuster, mild exfoliant and humectant-skin conditioner. Cosmetics containing higher concentration (30%) and lower pH (3.0) of AHA can cause side effects if it is applied without the prescription. For providing information on the safety of AHA and on human risk assessments we studied skin irritation effect of glycolic acid, one of the most commonly used AHA in guinea pigs. The skin irritation by glycolic acid was increased in a dose(10% to 70%), acidity (pH 2.5 to 5.5.) and length of exposure dependent manner (for up to 14 days), respectively. The combination treatment with UVB (0.4 or 3.0 J/$cm^2$) increased glycolic acid-induced skin irritation. Histological examination showed that hyperplasia of non-inflammatory cells in the epidermis of skin treated with high dose of glycolic acid (pH 3.0). There results show that glycolic acid increased skin irritation in a dose, length of exposure and pH dependent manner, respectively, in guinea pig, and the combination with UVB increased glycolic acid-induced skin irritation. The cell proliferation of non-inflammatory cell may be involved in high doses of glycolic acid-induced skin irritation. Long-term application of more than 30% of glycolic acid (pH 3.0) may cause skin irritation.

This paper describes a new algorithm for pixel-based skin color detection to differentiate human form in color images by the ratio of R to H. In order to detect skin color efficiently, we examine the distribution of the R, G and B color elements combining to constitute the skin color in various color images. It shows that R is located in a narrower area than G and B on the RGB color space. And skin color is more related to R than G and B. Meanwhile, when the color image is transformed to the HSI color space, the S is variously changed in accordance with skin colors. The I is changed in accordance with the quantity and angle of light. But the H is less influenced by other conditions except for color. On the basis of the aforementioned study, we propose that the threshold for skin color detection is decided by the ratio of R to H. The proposed method narrows down the range of threshold, detects more skin color and reduces mis-detection of skin color in comparison to detection by R or H. In experimentation. it shows that the proposed algorithm overcomes changes of brightness and color to detect skin color in color images.

Chemicals for cosmetics, including skin, the skin absorbs some of the research in the field of science or pharmacy recently, about the environment and the health of the heightened interest in skin absorption, and many other human attributes and absorption evaluation studies are underway in various areas. In this study, The effects of commercial permanent wave products to skin which are composed with cysteine and bases using rat. Results are as follows; the content of penetration 4 hours later with steady state and no significant changeable after 20 hours later. In cysteine groups lag time and permeability coefficient of young skin is 3.32hr and $0.102{\mu}g/cm^2{\cdot}hr$, lag time and permeability coefficient of old skin is 4.04hr and $0.106{\mu}g/cm^2{\cdot}hr$. In conclusion of study lag time and permeability coefficient in old skin and wounded skin are faster than healthy skin. We notified that fine rinkle and rash of skin were changeable in the case of treating with permanent wave drugs than normal skin.
The skin experiences constant physical stimuli, such as stretching. Exposure to excessive physical stimuli stresses the skin and can accelerate aging. In this study, we applied a method that allowed human fibroblasts and keratinocytes to be perfused with media to form 3D skin equivalents that were then uniaxially 10%-stretched for 12 h per day (at either 0.01 or 0.05 Hz) for up to 7 days to form wrinkled skin-on-a-chip (WSOC). There was more wrinkling seen in skin equivalents under 0.01 Hz uniaxial stretching than there was for non-stretched skin equivalents. At 0.05 Hz, the stratum corneum almost disappeared from the skin equivalents, indicating that stretching was harmful for the epidermis. At both frequencies, the production of collagen and related proteins in the skin equivalents, such as fibronectin 10 and keratin, decreased more than those in the non-stretched equivalents, indicating that the dermis also suffered from the repeated tensile stress. These results suggest that WSOCs can be used to examine skin aging and as an in vitro tool to evaluate the efficacy of anti-wrinkle cosmetics and medicines.

Recently, along with the remarkable increase in interest in microbiome cosmetics, the application of microbiome extracts in the complex efficacy as anti-aging, brightening etc. has become very important. In this study, Bifidobacterium bifidum (B. bifidum), which has excellent anti-wrinkle efficacy among the microbiome, was selected through an in vitro test using cells and 3D human skin equivalents. And the anti-wrinkle efficacy of cosmetics containing B. bifidum was evaluated by clinical test. Thereafter, the cytotoxicity, anti-oxidation, anti-inflammatory and anti-wrinkle efficacy of the of the bifida fermented filtrate were tested. An emulsion containing bifida fermented filtrate at a concentration of 5% (v/v) with no cytotoxicity and excellent efficacy was prepared with the placebo emulsion. The clinical test was conducted on a total of 21 women at 2 weeks comparing the bifida emulsion and placebo emulsion. Wrinkles around the eyes were instrumentally evaluated using Antera 3D. The wrinkle reduction rate of the Bifida emulsion group compared with the placebo emulsion group differed by 5.6%. Overall, the selection of microbiome using 3D human skin equivalents and the efficacy study of cosmetics with the microbiome extracts would be actively studied to the development of microbiome cosmetics and skin microbiome mechanisms.

The purpose of this study is to clarify the floor temperature on the human body and to estimate thermal comfort zone in a heated room. In order to evaluate the effects of floor heating, a series of experiments were carried out using Korean subjects. The following experiments were conducted: 1) to obtain the effective radiation area and configuration factors of the person in the sitting posture on a floor to get the mean radiant temperature, 2) to measure contacted area of the person to the floor to calculate conduction heat rate, 3) to measure convective heat transfer coefficient of the body and 4) to know the thermal comfort zone of indoor environment heated by ON-DOL. Subjects were exposed to the following conditions: combinations of air temperature $20^{\circ}C$, $22.5^{\circ}C$, $25^{\circ}C$, and floor temperature $20^{\circ}C$, $22.5^{\circ}C$, $25^{\circ}C$, $27.5^{\circ}C$, $30^{\circ}C$, $32.5^{\circ}C$, $35^{\circ}C$, $37.5^{\circ}C$, $40^{\circ}C$ under still air and 50% relative humidity in the controllable artificial climate chamber. To evaluate the effect of heat conduction between the body and a floor modified mean skin temperature was defined. Weighting coefficient to calculate mean skin temperature were modified with the contacted area. The experiments revealed a positive correlation between the modified operative temperature and the modified mean skin temperature. The modified mean skin temperature can indicate the effect of heat conduction between body and a floor surface.
An experimental study was performed for the preparation of living skin-equivalent by the using collagen gel contraction with human fibroblasts as neodermls and cultured human keratinocytes as neoderm is . The results were as follows ; 1) The rate of collagen gel contraction was dependent on the number of fibroblasts into the lattice and collagen contraction was progressed according to the increment of the number of the cells. 2) The rate of collagen gel contraction was progressed according to the decrement of the contraction of the collagen. 3) The rate of gel contraction was progressed according to the increment of serum concentration in the fixed concentration of the fibroblasts and collagen. 4) The lattice contraction was decreased according to the increment of the population doublings of the fibroblasts. 5) Macroscopically, the artificial dermis was gray white in color and tissue-like consistency and elas- ticity. 6) Microscopically, three dimensionally contracted artificial dermis showed more dense fibroblasts and its newly formed collagen fibrils in the matrix than one dimensionally contracted one. 7) Finally prepared skin-equivalent showed good attachment of living stratified keratinocytes to the dermal equivalent microscopically. It has been proposed that newly formed skin-equivalent is suitable for the graft of extensively and deeply burned patients. Shortening of the manufacturing period of skin-equivalent and development of conservation technique as a readily usable state are to be solved for our ongoing works.
The dermal papilla is known to playa major role in influencing the form and dynamics of the hair follicle, which probably involves regulatory substances crossing the basal lamina. But little is known about the junctions between the dermal papilla and the surrounding epithelial cells of the hair bulb, or between the connective tissue and the epithelial cells on the outside of the hair follicle. This study was performed to identify the ultrastructural differences between dermoepidermal junction of the skin and connective tissue-epithelial junctions on the outside of the hair follicle and around the dermal papilla of normal anagen hair follicles in the human fetal scalp skin. Electron microscopic findings of dermoepidermal junction in scalp skin showed that basal lamina was very irregular and undulated, and it contained many attachment plaques of hemidesmosomes with sub-basal dense plates, tonofilaments, and anchoring filaments. Also invaginations of plasma membrane of basal keratinocytes were seen. There were clear differences both on the outside of the follicle and around the dermal papilla as compared with similar junction in the skin. In particular, neither hemidesmosomes nor tonofilaments, as seen in dermoepidermal junction, were observed in the dermal papilla. Also attachment plaque, sub-basal dense plate and anchoring filaments were not observed at the junction on the outside of the follicle and the dermal papilla. There were some differences between connective tissue-epithelial junctions on the outside of the hair follicle and around the dermal papilla, ie, smoothness of basal lamina and orthogonal arrangement of collagen fibers were seen in the outside of hair follicle, but not in the dermal papilla. These results indicate that the mechanical connection between the hair follicle and the connective tissue component is much weaker than that between the corresponding components in skin, and it reflects the dynamic processes during the anagen phase of the hair follicle compared to the relatively permanent state of the epidermis.
