Intelligent Space is a space where many sensors and intelligent devices are distributed. Mobile robots exist in this space as physical agents, which provide human with services. To realize this, human and mobile robots have to approach each other as much as possible. Moreover, it is necessary for them to perform interactions naturally. It is desirable for a mobile robot to carry out human affinitive movement. In this research, a mobile robot is controlled by the Intelligent Space through its resources. The mobile robot is controlled to follow walking human as stably and precisely as possible. In order to follow a human, control law is derived from the assumption that a human and a mobile robot are connected with a virtual spring model. Input velocity to a mobile robot is generated on the basis of the elastic force from the virtual spring in this model. And its performance is verified by the computer simulation and the experiment.
In this paper, wireless interface of the motion between human and robot is implemented. The idea is that if a human who is equiped with device including accelerometer and rate-gyro sensor move his/her arm, then the robot follows human motion. The robot is designed as wheeled type mobile robot with two link arms. The robot´s basic movements such as forward, backward, left, right movement can be controlled from foot sensor which human steps on. Arm movements can be controlled by arm motion of human motion. In order to detect human motion, sensor data analysis from gyro and accelerometer has to be done. Data from sensors are transferred through wireless communication to activate the robot.
This paper treats the estimation of human impedance and their application to collaboration work robot. Initially, we performa an experiment at whcich teh human becomes a slave and the robot behaves like a master having F/T sensor on its end. the human impedance expressed interms of mass, damping, and stiffness properties are estimated based on the force data measured by F/T sensor and the positiion data of the robot. To show the effectiveness of the estimated human impedance, we perform the second experiment at which the roles of the human and the robot are reversed. It is shown that the robot using the estimated human impedance follows the trajectory commanded by human very smoothly.
The importance of the interaction capability of a robot increases as the application of a robot is extended to a human's daily life. In this paper, a portable mediate interface Handybot is developed with various interaction channels to be used with an intelligent home service robot. The Handybot has a task-oriented channel of an icon language as well as a verbal interface. It also has an emotional interaction channel that recognizes a user's emotional state from facial expression and speech, transmits that state to the robot, and expresses the robot's emotional state to the user. It is expected that the Handybot will reduce spatial problems that may exist in human-robot interactions, propose a new interaction method, and help creating rich and continuous interactions between human users and robots.
This paper presents the interactive behavior modeling method based on POMDP (Partially Observable Markov Decision Process) for HRI (Human-Robot Interaction). HRI seems similar to conversational interaction in point of interaction between human and a robot. The POMDP has been popularly used in conversational interaction system. The POMDP can efficiently handle uncertainty of observable variables in conversational interaction system. In this paper, the input variables of the proposed conversational HRI system in POMDP are the input information of sensors and the log of used service. The output variables of system are the name of robot behaviors. The robot behavior presents the motion occurred from LED, LCD, Motor, sound. The suggested conversational POMDP-based HRI system was applied to an emotional robot KIBOT. In the result of human-KIBOT interaction, this system shows the flexible robot behavior in real world.
Although human-sized bipedal humanoid robots have been developed as the ideal form of human-friendly robots, studies of humanoid robots from the user perspective and of actual interaction between humanoid robots and the public in daily environments are few. This paper presents a long-term public demonstration that encouraged interaction between a humanoid robot and unspecified individuals. We have collected a significant amount of subjective evaluation data from the public by performing a storytelling demonstration that enhanced people's empathy towards the robot. The evaluation model consists of the robot's human friendliness, which involves its impression on humans, interaction with humans, and imitation of human motions and the robot's human appearance which involves gender, age, height, and body type. This study shows that there is no significant difference in human-friendliness between gender groups (male and female), while there is a significant difference between age groups (children and adults). In human appearance, it appears that there is no significant difference between either gender groups or age groups, except for the case of the robot's height.
For efficient interaction between humans and robots, robots should be able to understand the meaning and intention of human behaviors as well as recognize them. This paper proposes an interactive human intention reading method in which a robot develops its own knowledge about the human intention for an object. A robot needs to understand different human behavior structures for different objects. To this end, this paper proposes a hierarchical behavior knowledge network that consists of behavior nodes and directional edges between them. In addition, a human intention reading algorithm that incorporates reinforcement learning is proposed to interactively learn the hierarchical behavior knowledge networks based on context information and human feedback through human behaviors. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated through play-based experiments between a human and a virtual teddy bear robot with two virtual objects. Experiments with multiple participants are also conducted.
In this paper, We design and implement a humanoid robot, With Educational purpose, which can collaborate and communicate with human. We present an affective human-robot communication system for a humanoid robot, D2, which we designed to communicate with a human through dialogue. D2 communicates with humans by understanding and expressing emotion using facial expressions, voice, gestures and posture. Interaction between a human and a robot is made possible through our affective communication framework. The framework enables a robot to catch the emotional status of the user and to respond appropriately. As a result, the robot can engage in a natural dialogue with a human. According to the aim to be interacted with a human for voice, gestures and posture, the developed Educational humanoid robot consists of upper body, two arms, wheeled mobile platform and control hardware including vision and speech capability and various control boards such as motion control boards, signal processing board proceeding several types of sensors. Using the Educational humanoid robot D2, we have presented the successful demonstrations which consist of manipulation task with two arms, tracking objects using the vision system, and communication with human by the emotional interface, the synthesized speeches, and the recognition of speech commands.
An intelligent robot, which has been developed recently, is no more a conventional robot widely known as an industrial robot. It is a computer system embedded in a machine and utilizes the machine as a medium not only for the communication between the human and the computer but also for the physical interaction among the human, the computer and their environment. Recent advances in computer technology have made it possible to create several of new types of human-computer interaction which are realized by utilizing intelligent machines. There is a continuing need for better understanding of how to design human/robot interface(HRI) to make for a more natural and efficient flow of information and feedback between robot systems and their users in both directions. In this paper, we explain the concept and the scope of HRI and review the current research trends of domestic and foreign HRL. The recommended research directions in the near future are also discussed based upon a comparative study of domestic and foreign HRI technology.
For effective human-robot interaction, robots need to understand the current situation context well, but also the robots need to transfer its understanding to the human participant in efficient way. The most convenient way to deliver robot's understanding to the human participant is that the robot expresses its understanding using voice and natural language. Recently, the artificial intelligence for video understanding and natural language process has been developed very rapidly especially based on deep learning. Thus, this paper proposes robot vision to audio description method using deep learning. The applied deep learning model is a pipeline of two deep learning models for generating natural language sentence from robot vision and generating voice from the generated natural language sentence. Also, we conduct the real robot experiment to show the effectiveness of our method in human-robot interaction.
