A study on Graham Greene's 'trilogy': Religious reality confronted on conflict and future-oriented faith exploration (그레이엄 그린의 '삼부작' 주제연구: 종교적 갈등의 현실과 미래지향적 신앙의 탐색)

  • R.W.B. Lewis called Greene's three novels - Brighton Rock, The Power and the Glory and The Heart of the Matter - Greene's 'trilogy'. Greene was paid full attention by many readers and many critics after publishing these Catholic novels. The themes and plots of his Catholic novels are unique and beyond those of traditional Catholicism. Greene is always willing to stand on the edge of reality. He always conflicts with the reality and eagerly searches for a higher, more spiritual dimension. If we view Greene's protagonists from an open-minded viewpoint, Pinkie of Brighton Rock will be saved at the mercy and grace of God in spite of being evil. Whiskey Priest of The Power and the Glory is worthy of being called a saint in spite of his drunkenness and adultery. Scobie of The Heart of the Matter will be within God's grace in spite of his suicide. The reason all protagonists are saint-like is clear and simple because they all have faith and sacrifice themselves to obey God's first commandment, to love others. To summarize the theme of Greene's 'trilogy', we can say that love is the most valuable in the world. God has mercy for all human beings. The protagonists love God and they love others. In fact, Greene's faith is found in his love of human beings and God.

A Study on Kyaikkatha: An Early Urban Settlement in Lower Myanmar

  • Sittaung-Thanlwin region in Lower Myanmar is an ecological niche for human settlement. Evidences of human activities in the region are seen through various archaeological sites or settlements along the coastal area between the rivers Sittaung and Thanlwin (Salween). In Lower Myanmar, scholar, U Aung Myint, discovered one major site Kyaikkatha and other small scale sites, namely, Sittaung, Kawhtin, Kadaikgyi, Kadaikkalay, Katkadit, Kelatha (little Zothoke), Ayetthama, Winka, Zothoke (big Zothoke), Lagonbyi (Sampannago), Wagaru, Laming and Ye in present day Mon State. In 1980, U Aung Myint undertook an exploration program at Kyaikkatha. After the exploration, an excavation team conducted systematic digging at Kyaikkatha in March 1986. Excavation continued occasionally at Kyaikkatha throughout the years between 1995 and 2000. It is known that Kyaikkatha, the old city, reveals a kind of monumental civilization exposing four religious structures (a stupa and three monasteries). This essay looks into the distribution of features within Kyaikkatha and infers on its social, political, and religious organization. This essay is also about a new discovery of an early urban settlement located at the apex of the Gulf of Muttama (Martaban) where a lost city of Suvannahumi flourished in the ancient days. By means of aerial photographic observations, the site had been noticed recently, which was by followed some excavations. More systematic and detail surveying may be needed to know more about the site and its features for comparison to other similar settlements of through-out mainland South East Asia.

A Study on a Virtual Object Exploration Using a Force Reflection Virtual Teleoperation System (힘 반향 가상원격조작 시스템을 이용한 가상 물체 탐색에 관한 연구)

  • This paper develops a master manipulator which can reflect a force from a slave manipulator effectively. It many have a big workspace, can represent a human operators manipulation perfectly, and is composed of a position control part, an orientation control part and an end effector control part. This paper also develops a graphic simulator using the Visual C++ and OpenGL in the Window operating system. It can be used to make a virtual slave manipulator and set a virtual working environment, and provide a visual information from a desired view point. A virtual teleoperation system is developed by connecting the developed master manipulator to the graphic simulator using an interfacing hardware bilaterally. It is used for performing a virtual object exploration experiment. In the experiment, two virtual objects are used. They are virtual wall and virtual hexahedron which have 0.7N/mm and 2.2 N/mm stiffness respectively. The experiments are performed under six different working conditions. The experiment results will show the effectiveness of the reflected force from the slave manipulator for improving the efficiency and stability of the teleoperation task.

Difficulty Evaluation of Game Levels using A Path-Finding Algorithm (경로 탐색 알고리즘을 이용한 게임 레벨 난이도 평가)

  • The difficulty of the game is closely related to the fun of the game. However, it is not easy to determine the appropriate level of difficulty of the game. In most cases, human playtesting is required. But even so, it is still hard to quantitatively evaluate difficulty of the game. Thus, if we perform quantitative evaluation of the difficulty automatically it will be very helpful in game developments. In this paper, we use a path finding algorithm to evaluate difficulty of exploration in a game level. Exploration is a basic attribute in common video games and it represents the overall difficulty of the game level. We also optimize the proposed evaluation algorithm by using previous exploration histories when available area in an game level is dynamically expanded and the new search is required.

  • In 2019, the Aerospace Medical Association of Korea celebrated its 30th anniversary. On the other side of the world, it was also the 62nd anniversary of Russian launch Sputnik 1 of the world's first artificial satellite on October 4, 1957. In additionally, the world, especially the United States was shocked, when on November 3, 1957, Sputnik 2 blasted into Earth orbit with a dog named "Laika"; it was the role of veterinarian's activities for aerospace medical research and exploration. Veterinarians (Vets) are responsible for the health of all the animals for aerospace medicine whether on the ground or in space. Vets can enhance animal and public health and this knowledge of Vets and astronauts can extend their mission durations, go to nearby Earth Asteroids, Mars and other heavenly bodies to study their living and non-living characteristics. This review article is the brief history of the original growth of the veterinarian's activities for the aerospace medical research, in order to stimulate future strategies for improvements in the space life sciences and exploration.

  • In network human-robot interaction, human can access services of a robot system through the network The communication is done by interacting with the distributed sensors via voice, gestures or by using user network access device such as computer, PDA. The service organization and exploration is very important for this distributed system. In this paper we propose a new agent-based framework to integrate partners of this distributed system together and help users to explore the service effectively without complicated configuration. Our system consists of several robots. users and distributed sensors. These partners are connected in a decentralized but centralized control system using agent-based technology. Several experiments are conducted successfully using our framework The experiments show that this framework is good in term of increasing the availability of the system, reducing the time users and robots needs to connect to the network at the same time. The framework also provides some coordination methods for the human robot interaction system.

Digital enhancement of pronunciation assessment: Automated speech recognition and human raters

  • This study explores the potential of automated speech recognition (ASR) in assessing English learners' pronunciation. We employed ASR technology, acknowledged for its impartiality and consistent results, to analyze speech audio files, including synthesized speech, both native-like English and Korean-accented English, and speech recordings from a native English speaker. Through this analysis, we establish baseline values for the word error rate (WER). These were then compared with those obtained for human raters in perception experiments that assessed the speech productions of 30 first-year college students before and after taking a pronunciation course. Our sub-group analyses revealed positive training effects for Whisper, an ASR tool, and human raters, and identified distinct human rater strategies in different assessment aspects, such as proficiency, intelligibility, accuracy, and comprehensibility, that were not observed in ASR. Despite such challenges as recognizing accented speech traits, our findings suggest that digital tools such as ASR can streamline the pronunciation assessment process. With ongoing advancements in ASR technology, its potential as not only an assessment aid but also a self-directed learning tool for pronunciation feedback merits further exploration.

  • This paper is a proposal of Sentinel Asia for Environment (SAFE). The essential to this project is to help environmental agencies in Asia to set up an environmental monitoring system with satellite observation data. It is focused on an environmental issues originated from anthropogenic events detected as land cover and land use change in Asians' daily human life including; agriculture, global warming gas, urban environment and forest resources. It is leaded by Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) along with University of Tokyo and Asian Institute of Technology in Thailand under the umbrella of Sentinel Asia which is dedicated to disaster monitoring issues. It is expected to initiate a information outgoing through WWW for Asian countries to set up their national land information system focusing on environmental changes.

  • A new way to integrate various geophysical information for evaluation of RQD was developed. In this study, we did not directly define the RQD value where borehole data are not sampled. Instead, we infer the probability of RQD values with prior probability from borehole direct data, and secondary supporting probability from resistivity and seismic tomography data. For the integration, we applied the geostatstical indicator kriging to get prior probability of RQD value, and indicator kriging with soft data to get the supporting probability from resistivity and seismic data. And we finally use the permanence ratio rule to integrate these information. The finally obtained result was also analyzed to fully utilize the probabilistic features. We show the probability of wrongly classifying the RQD evaluation and vice versa. This result may be used for decision making process based on the geophysical exploration.

Investigation of the Characteristic Nighttime Temperature of Potential Caves on Mars

  • By providing an environment where energetic particles and micrometeorites can not penetrate, caves on Mars may serve as a human shelter in future Mars explorations. More than 1,000 cave entrance candidates have been detected; however, their physical characteristics that can be utilized in detecting more candidates have not been explored in detail. In this paper, we explore the nighttime temperature of 100 cave entrance candidates and their surrounding areas to investigate 1) the nighttime temperature tendencies relative to their surrounding areas and 2) the extent of these temperature differences. We find that 79% of the cave entrance candidates exhibit higher temperatures than the surrounding areas, and 59% show a temperature difference over 20K, suggesting that the cave entrances may generally show higher temperatures than the surrounding areas during the nighttime.
