  • Objectives : The objective of this paper is to discuss the importance of obtaining informed consent for conducting epidemiological studies and public health activities, based on the Report of the UNESCO's Working Group on Informed Consent. Methods : The Report of the UNESCO's Working Group on Informed Consent was reviewed and discussed in connection with the ethical considerations of public health activities and epidemiological research. Results : It was at the Nuremberg Trial for the German war criminals of the Second World War that the principle of 'consent' was first stated as a consequence of the medical abuses carried out during the War. As a result of the Trial, the Nuremberg Code came out in 1947. Since then, various international declarations or ethical principles on 'informed consent' have been developed and published. These ethical principles on 'informed consent' have mostly to do with the clinical research that involves human subjects, and not with epidemiological studies and public health activities. However, UNESCO recently issued a comprehensive Report on Informed Consent based on the Universal Declaration on Bioethics and Human Rights adopted in 2005, and this included detailed guidelines on informed consent in epidemiological studies and public health activities. Conclusions : Universal Declaration on Bioethics and Human Rights emphasizes the principle of autonomy to protect the human rights of the human subjects involved in any public health activities and epidemiological research. As a practical guideline, obtaining informed consent is strongly recommended.

  • Driving simulators have been developed for evaluating users' reaction to various driving situations. Dynamic simulators have, however, limitations of the motion feedback in space. Therefore, this paper presents a driving simulator and suggests a human sensibility ergonomics (kansei engineering) method to be used in improving sense of motion through a vehicle simulator. Human sensibility ergonomics(kansei engineering) is defined as translating technology of the customer' feeling about a new product into design elements. Constituents of the simulator were defined and the virtual world was generated by the object modeling technique. Senses perceived were classified into feelings of velocity, acceleration, rotation, and vibration based on the human sensibility associated with driving. And the most frequent verbal expressions were collected from 17 male subjects to define complex human sensibility.

  • This study presents a human sensibility evaluation method using neural network and multiple-template method on electroencephalogram(EEG). We used a multi-layer perceptron type neural network as the sensibility classifier using EEG signal. For our research objective, 10-channel EEG signals are collected from the healthy subjects. After the necessary preprocessing is performed on the acquired signals, the various EEG parameters are estimated and their discriminating performance is evaluated in terms of pattern classification capability. In our study, Linear Prediction(LP) coefficients are utilized as the feature parameters extracting the characteristics of EEG signal, and a multi-layer neural network is used for indicating the degree of human sensibility. Also, the estimation for human comfortableness is performed by varying temperature and humidity environment factors and our results showed that the proposed scheme achieved good performances for evaluation of human sensibility.

  • We present a new method for an automated markerless system to describe, analyze, and classify human gait motion. The automated system consists of three stages: I) detection and extraction of the moving human body and its contour from image sequences, ii) extraction of gait figures by the joint angles and body points, and iii) analysis of motion parameters and feature extraction for classifying human gait. A sequential set of 2D stick figures is used to represent the human gait motion, and the features based on motion parameters are determined from the sequence of extracted gait figures. Then, a k-nearest neighbor classifier is used to classify the gait patterns. In experiments, this provides an alternative estimate of biomechanical parameters on a large population of subjects, suggesting that the estimate of variance by marker-based techniques appeared generous. This is a very effective and well-defined representation method for analyzing the gait motion. As such, the markerless approach confirms uniqueness of the gait as earlier studies and encourages further development along these lines.

  • This paper proposes a method to select essential elements in a human evaluation model using the Choquet integral based on fuzzy measures and applies the model to the evaluation of human interface. Three kinds of concepts, Increment Degree, average of Increment Degree, Necessity coefficient, are defined. The proposed method selects essential elements by the use of the Relative necessity coefficient. The proposed method is applied to the analysis of human interface. In the experiment, (1) a warning sound, (2)a color vision, (3) the size of working area, (4) a response of confirmation, are considered as human interface elements. subjects answer the questionnarie after the experiment. From the data of questionnaire, fuzzy measures are identified and are applied to the proposed model. effectiveness of the proposed model is confirmed by the comparison of human interface elements extracted from the proposed model and those from the questionnarie.

  • The goal of the military medicine is not as same as that of the civil medical practice, and consequently the characteristics of military biomedical researches have their own uniqueness. In front of the prerogative of national defense, some of the human rights ordinarily ensured in normal researches with human subjects are not to be fully guaranteed. The hierarchic system of the military would complicate the issue when the soldiers are enrolled as human subject for the research. Some researches could be classified as a military secret, therefore, the confidentiality issues need to be well addressed. Institutional Review Board and review procedure should be modified for the military purposes. So, it is necessary to establish the appropriate regulatory system for the military biomedical researches with human subject to manage the complicated issues involved in them.

  • Recently, several studies have been conducted to lower the cost of transport of human by adding external joint stiffness elements. However, it has not been clearly elucidated whether adaptation time is required for human subjects to adapt to the added external joint stiffness. In this study, carbon plates in the form of shoe midsoles were added to the metatarsophalangeal joint, and the lower limb joint torque and mechanical energy consumption were compared before and after a total of 5 sessions (2.5 weeks) of running. A total of 11 young healthy participants exhibited higher elastic energy storage in carbon plates in the fifth session compared to the first session, and lower power in the ankle joint. This suggests that a single training session may be insufficient to validate the efficiency effect of added joint stiffness, and the human body seems to increase the elastic energy stored in the assistive joint stiffness and its reutilization.

  • The human error or error involved with human is still the major portion of the causes of marine casualties and attracting a great concern in ship operation. However, there are not so many researches conducted to investigate or develop methodologies for analyzing such causes of human error in maritime industry, which may be caused by the variety of factors affecting the performance of ship operation and the characteristics of human being. This paper aims to study the methodologies used in investigating human factors or errors in maritime field through the investigation of researches performed so far. The methodology for human factors can be usually classified into one of three types; descriptive studies, experimental research and evaluation research. Also there are many different kinds of applied researches for some specific subjects. Prior to the investigation of the root cause of marine accident related with human error, clear concept of the human factors and systematic taxonomy shall be established. Moreover, it is very important considerations in case of casualty inspection on human factors that the inspector on the accident shall have adequate knowledges, understandings on the concept of human factors including the way of research more than those of methodologies and techniques.
