  • This paper proposes a method which visualizes MRI head data in 3 dimensions with direct volume rendering. Though surface rendering is usually used for MRI data visualization, it has some limits of displaying little speckles because it loses the information of the speckles in the surfaces while acquiring the information. Direct volume rendering has ability of displaying little speckles, but it doesn't treat MRI data because of the data features of MRI. In this paper, we try to visualize MRI head data in 3 dimensions as follows. First, we separate the brain region from the head region of MRI head data, next increase the pixel level of the brain region, then combine the brain region with the increased pixel level and the head region without brain region, last visualizes the combined MRI head data with direct volume rendering. We segment the brain region from head region based on histogram threshold, morphology operations and snakes algorithm. The proposed segmentation method shows 91~95% similarity with a hand segmentation. The method rather clearly visualizes the organs of the head in 3 dimensions.

  • This study specifies the definition and characteristics of fake fashion by categorizing cases through an analytical framework that uses the concept of simulacre, which is one of the theories that explains the reproduction of images and symbols in a modern consumer society. The presentation stages of modern fake fashion based on Baudrillard's concept of simulacre are as follows: Stage 1 focuses on the realistic imitation of the original, Stage 2 maintains a similarity with the original while transforming through the distortion of shape or visual perception, Stage 3 is the reality of the original which has become significantly vague and actively involves the designer's creativity, and Stage 4 forms a new value and an independent aura beyond reproducing the original. The presentation techniques of modern fake fashion viewed in the concept of simulacre can be classified into optical illusions by reproduction, use of a fake object, use of unusual shapes, and re-signifying through borrowing. As a result of applying the collected cases to the analytical framework, image reproduction in Stage 1 with imitative nature is a counterfeit that cannot be regarded as fake fashion, and fake fashion in Stage 4 (that can be referred to as simulacre) is fashion with symbolic and multiple meanings with new and creative designs. Modern fake fashion analyzed in the concept of simulacre transforms or reproduces the preexisting original with the purpose of merely creating original designs as well as acts as a new symbolic signal that creates a new aura and sets a trend with a message.

  • The spatial distribution of geographical distances at five natural populations of Camellia japonica in Busan, Korea was studied. The four plots (Mollundae, Gadeok-do, Du-do, and Jwiseum) of C. japonica were uniformly distributed in the forest community and only one plot (Amnam-dong) was aggregately distributed in the forest community. Morisita index is related to the patchiness index showed that the plot $20m{\times}50m$ had an overly steep slope when the area was larger than $20m{\times}20m$, which indicated that the degree of aggregation increased significantly with increasing quadrat sizes, while the patchiness indices did not change from the plot $5m{\times}10m$ to $10m{\times}10m$. The spatial structure was quantified by Moran's I, a coefficient of spatial autocorrelation. Ten of the significant values (76.9%) were positive, indicating similarity among individuals in the first 4 distance classes (80 m), i.e., pairs of individuals with dissimilarity characteristics can separate by more than 100 m.

  • Ti-6Al-4V alloy have been used for dental implant because of its excellent biocompatibility, corrosion resistance, and mechanical properties. However, the integration of such implant in bone was not in good condition to achieve improved osseointergraiton. For solving this problem, calcium phosphate (CaP) has been applied as coating materials on Ti alloy implants for hard tissue applications because its chemical similarity to the inorganic component of human bone, capability of conducting bone formation and strong affinity to the surrounding bone tissue. Various metallic elements, such as strontium (Sr), magnesium (Mg), zinc (Zn), sodium (Na), silicon (Si), silver (Ag), and yttrium (Y) are known to play an important role in the bone formation and also affect bone mineral characteristics, such as crystallinity, degradation behavior, and mechanical properties. Especially, Zn is essential for the growth of the human and Zn coating has a major impact on the improvement of corrosion resistance. Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) is a promising technology to produce porous and firmly adherent inorganic Zn containing $TiO_2(Zn-TiO_2)$coatings on Ti surface, and the a mount of Zn introduced in to the coatings can be optimized by altering the electrolyte composition. In this study, corrosion behavior of Ti-6Al-4V alloy after plasma electrolytic oxidation in solutions containing Ca, P and Zn were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), AC impedance, and potentiodynamic polarization test. A series of $Zn-TiO_2$ coatings are produced on Ti dental implant using PEO, with the substitution degree, respectively, at 0, 5, 10 and 20%. The potentiodynamic polarization and AC impedance tests for corrosion behaviors were carried out in 0.9% NaCl solution at similar body temperature using a potentiostat with a scan rate of 1.67mV/s and potential range from -1500mV to +2000mV. Also, AC impedance was performed at frequencies ranging from 10MHz to 100kHz for corrosion resistance.

  • Glycyrrhizae radix, commonly known as licorice, is a perennial herb belonging to Leguminosae and also includes various components such as, glycyrrhizin, liquiritin, liquiritigenin and isoliquiritigenin etc. Licorice has been widely used in East Asia as a medicine having pharmacological effects like antioxidants, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer and immune modulatory activities. Among various licorice, Glycyrrhiza (G.) uralensis G. glabra and G. inflata are used for pharmaceutical purposes in Korea. However, cultivation of licorice has some problems such as low quality, low productivity, and early leaf drop. Korea Rural Development Administration developed new cultivars Wongam and Sinwongam, which are improved in cultivation and quality. To register the newly developed cultivar (s) on Ministry of Food and Drug Safety in Korea as a medicine, it is necessary to prove the similarity and difference through the comparative studies between already-registered species and new cultivars. Some fungi and bacteria usually in the human oral cavity and intestines exist as harmless state in human body. Also, the skin and genital infections by fungi can lead to toxic systemic infections and are accompanied by flushing, rashes, burning or painful sensation. The influences of licorice varieties on fungi and bacteria might be an evidence to prove the outstanding effect of newly developed licorice variety. In this study, the antifungal and antibacterial activity was investigated using newly developed licorice varieties Wongam, and Sinwongam against various fungi and bacteria. These results means newly developed licorice could be used as a replacement of already-registered species in terms of antifungal and antibacterial application.

  • The heterogeneous Onju citrus genes (A=20.57, C=32.71, G=30.01, U=16.71%) and coffee genes (A=20.66, C=31.76, G=30.187, U=16.71%) have the same genetic ratio of 95% or more. It is known that gene compatibility is generally not possible with this group. However, it can be grafted if the conditions of Chargaff rule and Shannon Entropy are met with gene functional-similarity of more than 95%, and it becomes a new breed of Coffrange. We calculated the world's first BCJM matrix for DNA-RNA and published it in US patents and international journals. All animals and viruses are similar to human genes. Based on this, it was announced in June in the British matrix textbook by solving the genetic characteristics of COVID-19 and the human body. In plants, it is treated with BCJM-Transposon treatment, a technique that easily changes gene location. Simulation predicted that the matrix could be successful with Cut & Paste and Transpose.

  • The genus Babesia includes parasites that can induce human and animal babesiosis, which are common in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. The gut microbiota has not been examined in hamsters infected by Babesia duncani. Red blood cells infected with B. duncani were injected into hamsters through intraperitoneal route. To evaluate the changes in gut microbiota, DNAs were extracted from small intestinal contents, acquired from hamsters during disease development. Then, the V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene of bacteria was sequenced using the Illumina sequencing platform. Gut microbiota alternation and composition were assessed according to the sequencing data, which were clustered with >97.0% sequence similarity to create amplicon sequence variants (ASVs). Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes were made up of the major components of the gut microbiota in all samples. The abundance of Bacteroidetes elevated after B. duncani infection than the B. duncani-free group, while Firmicutes and Desulfobacterota declined. Alpha diversity analysis demonstrated that the shown ASVs were substantially decreased in the highest parasitemia group than B. duncani-free and lower parasitemia groups. Potential biomarkers were discovered by Linear discriminant analysis Effect Size (LEfSe) analysis, which demonstrated that several bacterial families (including Muribaculaceae, Desulfovibrionaceae, Oscillospiraceae, Helicobacteraceae, Clostridia UGG014, Desulfovibrionaceae, and Lachnospiraceae) were potential biomarkers in B. duncani-infected hamsters. This research demonstrated that B. duncani infectious can modify the gut microbiota of hamsters.

  • Swine influenza (SI) is an important respiratory disease in pigs and epidemic worldwide, which is caused by influenza A virus (IAV) belonging to the family of Orthomyxoviridae. As seen again in the 2009 swine-origin influenza A H1N1 pandemic, pigs are known to be susceptible to swine, avian, and human IAVs, and can serve as a 'mixing vessel' for the generation of novel IAV variants. To this end, the emergence of swine influenza viruses must be kept under close surveillance. Herein, we report the isolation and phylogenetic study of a swine IAV, A/swine/Korea/21810/2021 (sw21810, H3N2 subtype). BLASTN sequence analysis of 8 gene segments of the isolated virus revealed a high degree of nucleotide similarity (94.76 to 100%) to porcine strains circulating in Korea and the United States. Out of 8 genome segments, the HA gene was closely related to that of isolates from cluster I. Additionally, the NA gene of the isolate belonged to a Korean Swine H1N1 origin, and the PB2, PB1, NP and NS genes of the isolate were grouped into that of the Triple reassortant swine H3N2 origin virus. The PA and M genes of the isolate belonged to 2009 Pandemic H1N1 lineage. Human infection with mutants was most common through contact with infected pigs. Our results suggest the need for periodic close monitoring of this novel swine H3N2 influenza virus from a public health perspective.
