Three clustering patterns among metabolic syndrome risk factors and their associations with dietary factors in Korean adolescents: based on the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey of 2007-2010

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Even though the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in adolescents is increasing, little is presently known about this syndrome in adolescents. This study aimed to cluster metabolic risk factors as well as examine the associations between identified patterns and nutrient intake using data from the Korean National Health Examination and Nutritional Assessment (KNHANES). SUBJECTS/METHODS: A total of 2,958 subjects aged 10 to 18 years along with both biochemical and dietary data information were obtained from KNHANES 2007-2010. Six components of metabolic syndrome were used to identify any patterns via factor analysis. Individuals were categorized into quartile groups according to their pattern score. RESULTS: Three clustering patterns with high loadings were identified and named as follows: 1) high blood pressure, 2) dyslipidemia, and 3) glucose abnormality patterns. The high blood pressure pattern showed high loadings of systolic and diastolic blood pressures, the dyslipidemia pattern showed high loadings of triglyceride and HDL-cholesterol levels, and the glucose abnormality pattern showed high loadings of fasting blood glucose levels. Intakes of fat and riboflavin were significantly decreased, whereas those of sodium and niacin were significantly increased across the quartiles in the dyslipidemia pattern. No nutrient intake except that of thiamin was significantly associated with the high blood pressure or glucose abnormality pattern. CONCLUSION: Our findings show that metabolic syndrome risk factors in the Korean adolescent population are characterized by three distinct patterns, which are differentially associated with dietary factors. Characterizing metabolic risk factors and providing specific dietary guidelines for target groups are important.

프로테오믹스를 이용한 내분비계 교란물질 환경독성 연구 (Proteome in Toxicological Assessment of Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals)

  • 환경오염이 심각해짐에 따라 국내외적으로 환경에 대한 관심이 고조되고 인체에 해를 끼치는 환경요인으로부터 방어하기 위한 많은 노력들이 기울여지고 있다. 특히 내분비계장애물질이 생식기능과 면역기능을 약화시키고, 행동 이상을 일으키며, 암 발생률을 높인다는 점이 밝혀지기 시작하면서 많은 연구들이 발표되고 여러 가지 방법들이 내분비계장애물질과 더불어 환경분야연구에 응용되어왔지만 단백질을 대상으로 연구하여 유전자기능을 연구하는 프로테오믹스(proteomics) 연구를 접목시키려는 시도가 아직까지는 빈약하다. 프로테오믹스는 기능을 갖는 단백질들의 발현을 종합적이고 정량적으로 측정하는 가장 직접적인 수단이고, 질병, 약물투여, shock 등 생물학적인 동요(perturbation)에 의하여 변하는 단백질들의 발현양상의 변화를 정확하게 관찰할 수 있으며, 생체내 유전자발현의 궁극적인 양상을 규명할 수 있고, 또한 유전자, 단백질 및 질병간의 연결고리를 제공한다. 기존의 biomarker는 다른 질병 표지자와 연관성이 높아 직접적인 유해물질 노출 위험도를 정확히 판정하기 어렵다. 따라서 대량발굴탐색(high-throughput screen-ing)이 가능한 2차원 전기영동 분석과 MALDI-TOF 또는 protein chip array와 SELDI-TOF에 의한 단백질 분자구조 분석기술 및 이들을 지원하는 생물정보학(bio-informatics)의 발전을 이용하여 환경독성 연구에 이용 할 수 있는 표적단백질(biomarker)발굴에 적절한 이용이 가능할 것이다.

폐금속광산 지역 농작물섭취경로의 인체위해도 산정을 위한 생물농축계수와 토양분석방법에 관한 연구 (Study on Soil Extraction Methods for the Human Health Risk Assessment of Crop Intake Pathway around Abandoned Metal Mine Areas)

  • Generally, the contribution of crop-intake pathway (CIP) is remarkable in human health assessment (HHA) of heavy metal contamination. Although the crop exposure concentrations (Cp) should directly be used for calculating the average daily dose (ADD) of CIP, the soil exposure concentration (Cs) multiplied by soil-crop bio-concentration factor (BCF) has frequently been used instead of using Cp values. Thus, the BCF values are significant in the HHA, and care should be taken to ensure the reasonable acquisition of BCF values. Meanwhile, the BCF values are known to be significantly affected by analytical methods. Nevertheless, they have been calculated from the concentrations of soil and crop analyzed by only one method: total digestion (aqua regia extraction). For this reason, this study was initiated to seek appropriate soil analysis methods for effective computation of the ADD of CIP. The concentrations of 5 metal contaminants (As, Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn) in 127 soil samples obtained from 4 abandoned metal mine areas were analyzed by several methods including total digestion and partial digestions using 0.1/1 N HCl, 1M $NH_4NO_3$, 0.1 M $NaNO_3$, and 0.01M $CaCl_2$. The heavy metal concentrations in 127 crop samples (rice grains) were analyzed by total digestion as well. Using the concentrations of soils and crops, the BCF values of each contaminant were calculated according to the kind of soil extraction methods applied. Finally, the errors between Cp and $C_s{\times}BCF$ were computed to evaluate the relevance of each method. The results indicate that the partial extraction using 0.1 N and 1 N HCl was superior or equivalent to total digestion. In addition, the 0.1M $NaNO_3$ method combined with total digestion is recommended for improving the reliability of BCF values.

수도권 대기 중 입자상 물질로 인한 건강부담 추정과 불확실성 (Uncertainty and Estimation of Health Burden from Particulate Matter in Seoul Metropolitan Region)

  • It is well known that exposure to high level of PM (particulate matter) can adversely affect human health. However, little is known about health burden of PM considering the relationship, exposed level of PM, and health level in local communities. And, there is scarcely methodical assessment of uncertainty for application to policies of these assessment results. The scope of this study is divided into two parts: firstly to estimate the death burden of PM10 (particulate matter less then $10{\mu}m$ in diameter) in Seoul metropolitan region, and secondly to evaluate potential uncertainties in these estimates. To estimate the death burden of PM10 in Seoul metropolitan region from 2005~2010, we firstly assessed the relationship between daily mean PM10 and daily death counts in Seoul from 2000~2010, and calculated the death burden of PM10 using BenMAP (Environmental Benefits Mapping and Analysis Program). After that, we identified and characterized uncertainties to substantially influence the results of death burden. The daily mortality risk was increased 1.000227 times (p-value/0.001) associated with $1{\mu}g/m^3$ increase of daily mean PM10 for all ages population, Seoul. And, death burdens of PM10 in Seoul metropolitan region were estimated from 5.51 in 2005 to 5.12 in 2010 per 100,000 people. Finally, we categorized context, model, and input uncertainty and characterized these uncertainties in three dimensions (i.e. location, level, and nature) using uncertainty typology. In our study, we argue that uncertainties need to be identified, assessed, reported and interpreted in order for assessment results to adequately support decision making, such as the establishment of air quality standards based on health burden of air quality.

국내 일부학교 건축물의 실내공기질 평가 (The Assessment of Survey on the Indoor Air Quality at Schools in Korea)

  • Recently, indoor air quality (IAQ) in workplace, residential environments and schools has been concerned of people, scientists and related the public, and has recognized the health effects related to indoor air pollution. Therefore, this study was performed to investigate the characteristics of IAQ in 55 kindergartens, elementary school, middle schools, and high schools from June, 2004 to May, 2005 in Korea. We measured indoor air pollutants($PM_{10},\;CO_2$, HCHO, total bacteria colony(TBC), CO, radon, TVOCs, asbestos, and $O_3$), and physical factors(noise, temperature, relative humidity, and illumination) with necessary of management for IAQ in school. We classified into 5 kinds of the school by period since building completion, <1 year, 1-3 years, 3-5 years, and 5-10 years. The concentration of pollutants and the level of physical factors compared with standards and guidelines of IAQ on the Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Health and Welfare, and the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development. The major results obtained from this study were as follows. Temperature, relative humidity and illumination among the physical factors did not exceed the standards, but noise exceeded it. Asbestos and $O_3$ did not detect in surveyed classrooms. CO, TBC, TVOCs, and HCHO in kindergartens, TBC in elementary schools, TBC, TVOCs dnd HCHO in middle schools, and HCHO in high schools detected the standards. This study is conducted as a part of efforts to provide a foundational data for further relative researches on management of IAQ of school. Therefore, we suggest that country plan for management of IAQ in school should be established through long-term and continuous investigation for assessment on IAQ in school and health risk assessment for students.

위험평가모형($TrophicTrace^{(R)}$)을 이용한 가상 해양오염퇴적물의 쥐노래미와 인체 영향 예비평가 (Potential Human Health and Fish Risks Associated with Hypothetical Contaminated Sediments Using a Risk Assessment Model ($TrophicTrace^{(R)}$))

  • 본고에서는 현재 시행중인 해양오염퇴적물질 관리용 유해화학물질 정화지수($CI_{HC}$)를 대상으로, $CI_{HC}$은 동일하나 유해 물질별 함량이 다른 해저퇴적물들이 같은 생물위험을 보이는가를 판단하려 하였다. 이를 위해 5개의 가상 오염퇴적물을 설정하고, 퇴적물 위험평가를 위한 트로픽트레이스 모형($TrophicTrace^{(R)}$ model)을 이용하여, 이 가상 퇴적물이 쥐노래미(Hexagrammos otakii)에 대해 미치는 생물위험을 최대무작용량에 기반한 독성지수(NOAEL TQ)와 최소작용량에 기반한 독성지수(LOAEL TQ)로 평가하였다. 쥐노래미에 대한 NOAEL TQ의 합계는 5개 가상 오염퇴적물에서 0.69~1.54의 범위였고, LOAEL TQ의 합계는 0.111~0.261로 약 2배 이상의 차이가 났다. 이는 퇴적물 유해물질 환경기준이 해양저서무척추동물군집에 대한 영향만을 고려하고 사람으로 연결되는 식용의 쥐노래미에 대한 영향을 반영하지 않기 때문으로 사료된다. 인체에 대한 비발암위험지수(HI) 값은 PCB의 경우 9.8~47.1로 매우 위험한 것으로 나타났다. PCB의 발암위험도는 5개 퇴적물에서 $39{\sim}190{\times}10^{-5}$으로 높게 나타났으며 As의 경우에도 $8.1{\sim}18.0{\times}10^{-5}$으로 높게 나타났다. 유해화학물질정화지수가 8로 동일한 5개 가상 오염퇴적물에서 비발암위험지수(HI) 및 발암위험도가 서로 매우 다르게 나타난 것은 각 오염물질별로 인체에 악영향을 미치는 정도가 다르기 때문이다.

부산 연근해 저서어류 체내의 미량금속 분포 특성과 잠재적 인체 위해성 평가 (Distribution and Potential Human Risk Assessment of Trace Metals in Benthic Fish Collected from the Offshore of Busan, Korea)

  • 본 연구는 부산연근해에서 서식하는 저서어류 체내의 미량금속에 의한 인체 위해 영향을 정량적으로 평가하기 위하여 수행되었다. 부산의 용호부두 인근에서 채취 된 4종의 식용저서어류 넙치, 우럭, 쥐치, 밑달갱이 조직내의 미량금속(trace metals)의 함량을 ICP-MS를 이용하여 분석하였다. 그리고 이를 토대로 어류섭취를 통한 미량금속의 인체 노출량을 파악하고, 이로 인한 잠재적 인체 위해도 평가를 수행하였다. 4종의 어류 조직 내 미량금속의 평균함량은 Li, Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Pb이 각각 $0.005{\pm}0.009$, $0.77{\pm}0.30$, $0.29{\pm}0.34$, $0.49{\pm}0.14$, $15.96{\pm}2.52$, $10.62{\pm}4.67$, $0.001{\pm}0.002$, $0.045{\pm}0.06mg/kgdw$으로 나타났다. 이 지역에서 채취된 어류의 섭취로 인한 표준체중(60 kg)의 국민에 대한 노출평가 결과 Cu, Zn은 PMTDI (provisional maximum tolerable daily intake)의 0.0032, 0.054-0.18%, As, Cd, Pb는 PTWI (provisional tolerable weekly intake)값의 13, 0.0041, 0.020%로 나타나 합동식품첨가물전문가위원회(The Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives, JFCFA)에서 권고하는 각원소의 제한섭취량에 비하여 매우 낮은 수준이었다. 그리고 독성(비발암)위해도 평가 결과는 모두 HI (hazard index)지수가 1 이하로 장기간 섭취하여도 안전한 것으로 나타났으며, 4종의 모든 어류섭취로 인한 As의 노출로 인한 초과 발암 위해도도 10만명 당 1명 이하로 나타나 역시 장기섭취로 인한 발암 확률도 무시할 만한 수준인 것으로 나타났다.

아연도금공정의 안전성평가 (A Study on the Safety Assessment of Zinc Plating Process)

  • There are now the plating process that have many hazardous factor cause of the using numerous noxious chemical and bad working environments. The purpose of the study is to make a selection of suitable safety evaluation method that can analyze and righteously find with numerous hazardous factor of the plating process. And another purpose is to systematically adjust the risk of plating process by comprehension of the role of process, equipment, and source material. Therefore, these studies are carried out in the following three investigations of this report. The first research understands the injurious human health and environment by analyzing hazardous material based on the MSDS. To evaluate the safety of process and compartment, the second research is proposed the security secure counterproposal by using the FMEA and the HAZOP. The final research is devoted to systematically analyze the hazard by applying for reasonable guide word and doing the HAZOP for hazardous factor in specific process.

  • Nanomaterials (NMs) find widespread use in different industries that range from agriculture, food, medicine, pharmaceuticals, and electronics to cosmetics. It is the exceptional properties of these materials at the nanoscale, which make them successful as growth promoters, drug carriers, catalysts, filters and fillers, but a price must be paid via the potential toxity of these materials. The harmful effects of nanoparticles (NPs) to environment, human and animal health needs to be investigated and critically examined, to find appropriate solutions and lower the risks involved in the manufacture and use of these exotic materials. The vast number and complex interaction of NM/NPs with different biological systems implies that there is no universal toxicity mechanism or assessment method. The various challenges need to be overcome and a number of research studies have been conducted during the past decade on different NMs to explore the possible mechanisms of uptake, concentrations/dosage and toxicity levels. This review article examines critically the recent reports in this field to summarize and present opportunities for safer design using case studies from published literature.

화학물질 우선순위선정 시스템에서 고려되는 노출.독성인자 비교연구 (Comparative Study of Exposure Potential and Toxicity Factors used in Chemical Ranking and Scoring System)

  • Chemical Ranking and Scoring (CRS) system is a useful tool to screen priority chemicals of large body of substances. The relative ranking of chemicals based on CRS system has served as a decision-making support tools. Exposure potential and toxicity are significant parameters in CRS system, and there are differences in evaluating those parameters in each CRS system. In this study, the parameters of exposure potential, human toxicity, and ecotoxicity were extensively compared. In addition the scoring methods in each parameter were analyzed. The CRS systems considered in this study include the CHEMS-1 (Chemical Hazard Evaluation for Management Strategies), SCRAM (Scoring and Ranking Assessment Model), EURAM (European Union Risk Ranking Method), ARET (Accelerated Reduction/Elimination of Toxics), and CRS-Korea. An comparative analysis of the several CRS systems is presented based on their assessment parameters and scoring methods.
