  • This study evaluates the permeability of cement-based composites, which are a mix of polyolefin fibers and silica fume. Test results indicate that permeability increases as the water/cementitious ratio increases. Silica fume in cement-based composites produced hydrated calcium silicate and filled the pores. However, permeability decreased as the addition of silica fume increased. Specimens containing polyolefin fibers also provided higher permeability resistance. The polyolefin fiber length did not have a significant effect on permeability. The decrease in the permeability is mainly due to the addition of silica fume and lower water/cementitious ratio. Addition of fibers marginally decreases the permeability. Incorporating polyolefin fiber and silica fume in composites achieved more significant decreases in permeability. The correlated test results reveal the interrelationship between them.

  • A lipopeptide extract of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens BACY1 (BLE) was found to induce cell death in human oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) cell lines, SCC4 and SCC25, in this study. The results of MTT assay showed that BLE inhibited OSCC cell proliferation in a dose-dependent manner. BLE was also effective in increasing the sub-G1 phases. Furthermore, when membrane damage in SCC4 cells treated with BLE was monitored by LDH assay, release of LDH was significantly increased. The protein and mRNA levels of pro-apoptotic Bax, and caspase-3 were up-regulated by BLE. Taken together, these results suggest that BLE induces apoptosis and then inhibits the cell proliferation of human OSCC cells.

  • Background: To investigate the value of ultrasound elastography (UE) in the differentiation between benign and malignant enlarged cervical lymph nodes (LNs). Methods: B-mode ultrasound, power Doppler imaging and UE were examined to determine LN characteristics. Two kinds of methods, 4 scores of elastographic classification and a strain ratio (SR) were used to evaluate the ultrasound elastograms. Results: The cutoff point of SR had high utility in differential diagnosis of benign and malignant of cervical lymph nodes, with good sensitivity, specificity and accuracy. Conclusion: UE is an important aid in differential diagnosis of benign and malignant cervical LNs.

  • To determine the infectivlty and maturity of nletacercanae of Parqgonimur westermani after keeping at low temperature for a long period, 45 mice and 45 rats were each infected with 20 metacercariae which were kept at $4^{\circ}C$ for 8 to 234 days. The worm recovery in mice increased with age of worm and reached a peak of 32% at 41-50 days and then decreased with age. The rate In rats first decreased to a lowest point of 6% at 71-100 days and then Increased with age. In 42 infected mice and 41 infected rats, 187 immature worms (183 tiny and 4 Juvenile ones) and 190 worms (164 tiny, 19 Juvenile and 7 mature ones) were recovered respectively. Two wormcysts with eggs only and 8 empty wormcysts were also found In the rats. In addition, the frozen metacercanae can still develop to mature worms in SD rats.

  • We have successfully used the low-pressure BioWare gene gun, developed for gene transfer in animal cells, for plant tissues. The BioWare device is easy to manipulate. Just 50 psi helium pressure was sufficient to transfer foreign genes into the aleurone layer and embryo of maize without causing tissue damage in the impact area. As shown by expression signals from invasive histochemical ${\beta}-glucuronidase$ (GUS) activity, the foreign reporter gene expressed well in bombarded tissues. This successful GUS-transient expression extends the application of this low-pressure gene gun from animal cells to plant tissues.
