Biotoxins for Cancer Therapy

  • In recent times, a number of studies have provided evidence that biotoxins present great potential as antitumor agents, such as snake venom, bee venom, some bacteria toxins and plant toxins, and thus could be used as chemotherapeutic agents against tumors. The biodiversity of venoms and toxins make them a unique source from which novel anticancer agent may be developed. Biotoxins, also known as natural toxins, include toxic substances produced by plants, animals and microorganisms. Here, we systematically list representative biological toxins that have antitumor properties, involving animal toxins, plant toxins, mycotoxins as well as bacterial toxins. In this review, we summarize the current knowledge involving biotoxins and the active compounds that have anti-cancer activity to induce cytotoxic, antitumor, immunomodulatory, and apoptotic effects in different tumor cells in vivo or in vitro. We also show insights into the molecular and functional evolution of biotoxins.

On the Characteristics of MSE-Optimal Symmetric Scalar Quantizers for the Generalized Gamma, Bucklew-Gallagher, and Hui-Neuhoff Sources

  • The paper studies characteristics of the minimum mean-square error symmetric scalar quantizers for the generalized gamma, Bucklew-Gallagher and Hui-Neuhoff probability density functions. Toward this goal, asymptotic formulas for the inner- and outermost thresholds, and distortion are derived herein for nonuniform quantizers for the Bucklew-Gallagher and Hui-Neuhoff densities, parallelling the previous studies for the generalized gamma density, and optimal uniform and nonuniform quantizers are designed numerically and their characteristics tabulated for integer rates up to 20 and 16 bits, respectively, except for the Hui-Neuhoff density. The assessed asymptotic formulas are found consistently more accurate as the rate increases, essentially making their asymptotic convergence to true values numerically acceptable at the studied bit range, except for the Hui-Neuhoff density, in which case they are still consistent and suggestive of convergence. Also investigated is the uniqueness problem of the differentiation method for finding optimal step sizes of uniform quantizers: it is observed that, for the commonly studied densities, the distortion has a unique local minimizer, hence showing that the differentiation method yields the optimal step size, but also observed that it leads to multiple solutions to numerous generalized gamma densities.

19세기 의방서 의휘(宜彙)의 구성과 내용 (Study on Contents of Medical Text YiHui Written in 19th Century)

  • YiHui(宜彙) is medical book written in 19th century. It's author is known as an intellectual. His pen name is GumLiSanIn(錦里散人). YiHui is a important book to show us medical treatment in Chosun-Korea 19th century. We purposed to analyze contents of YiHui and organize its Historical meanings. For that, we studied about GumLiSanIn. Then we explained contents of each chapter of this book. YiHui - title of book means gathering important treatment. Like that, this book contains a lots of skills and prescriptions origined from classic Chinese and Korean medical books. Many methods of this book are invented by practitioners who played an active part in the folk. Furthermore, its treatments is very simple and its hurbs is getatable to be used easily. Yihui inherits the tradition of Hyangyak that is local herb medicine of Chosun.
