In this study, aerodynamic characteristics of a horizontal axis wind turbine (HAWT) were evaluated and discussed in terms of measured data in existing onshore wind farm. Five wind turbines (T1, T2, T3, T4 and T5) were selected, and hub-height wind speed, $U_D$, wind turbine power output, P and turbine rotational speed, ${\Omega}$ data measured from these turbines were used for evaluation. In order to obtain characteristics of axial flow induction factor, a, power coefficient, $C_p$, thrust force coefficient, $C_T$, thrust force, T and tangential flow induction factor, a', Blade Element Momentum (BEM) theory was used. According to the results obtained, during a year, probability density of turbines at a rotational speed of 16.1 rpm was determined as approximately 45%. Optimum tip speed ratio was calculated to be 7.12 for most efficient wind turbine. Maximum $C_p$ was found to be 30% corresponding to this tip speed ratio.
The purpose of this 3-D numerical simulation is to calculate and examine the complex 3-D stall phenomena on the rotor blade and wake distribution of the wind turbine. The flow characteristics of 500kW Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine (HAWT) are compared with the calculated 3-D stall phenomena and wake distribution. We used the CFX-TASCflow to predict flow and power characteristics of the wind turbine. The CFD results are somewhat consistent with the BEM (Blade Element Momentum) results. And, the rotational speed becomes faster, the 3-D stall region becomes smaller. Moreover, the pressure distribution on the pressure side that directly gets the incoming wind grows high as it goes toward the tip of the blade. The pressure distribution on the blade's suction side tells us that the pressure becomes low in the leading edge of the airfoil as it moves from the hub to the tip. However, we are not able to precisely predict on the power coefficient of the rotor blade at the position of generating complex 3-D stall region.

A preliminary design procedure for a multi-stage axial compressor is developed, which is based on the stage-stacking method. It determines the flow coefficient which gives rise to the design conditions required such as pressure ratio, mass flow rate and rotational speed for a given specific mass flow rate at inlet to a compressor. With this flow coefficient, blade radii, every stage and compressor performance characterics such as stage pressure ratio, adiabatic efficiency etc. are calculated by stacking each stage performance characteristics. It is shown that there is an optimum number of stage which results in the maximum of compressor overall efficiency for a given specific mass flow rate at inlet to a compressor. A test design was tried for three different geometric design constraints, and comparison with a previous study shows that present procedure could be used reliably in determining the number of compressor stage in preliminary design stage.
In this investigation, the aerodynamic performance evaluation of a 1MW class blade has been performed with the purpose of the verification of target output and its clear understanding of flow field using CFD commercial code, ANSYS FLUENT. Before making progress of CFD analysis the HERACLES V2.0 software based on blade element momentum theory was applied for confirmation of quick and approximate performance in the preliminary stage. The blade was designed to produce the target output of a 1MW class at a rated wind speed of 12m/s, which consists of five different airfoils such as FFA W-301, DU91-W250, DU93-W-210, NACA 63418 and NACA 63415 from hub to tip. The mechanical power by CFD is approximately 1.195MW, which is converted into the electrical power of 1.075MW if the system loss is considered to be 0.877.

A blisk with rotor shroud is usually adopted in LRE turbine to maximize its performance. However it experiences severe thermal load and resulting damage during engine stating and stop. Shroud splitting is devised to relieve thermal stress on the turbine rotor. Structural analysis confirmed the reduction of plastic strain at the blade hub and tip. However, split gap at the rotor shroud entails additional tip leakage and results performance degradation. In order to assess the effect of shroud split on the turbine performance, tests have been performed for various settings of shroud split. For the maximum number of shroud splitting, measured efficiency reduction ratio was 2.65% to the value of original shape rotor.

In this paper, three-dimensional multiblade row unsteady Navier-Stokes simulations at a hot streak temperature ratio of 2.0 have been performed to reveal the effects of rotor tip clearance on the inlet hot streak migration characteristics in low pressure stage of a Vaneless Counter-Rotating Turbine. The hot streak is circular in shape with a diameter equal to 25% of the high pressure turbine stator span. The hot streak center is located at 50% of the span and the leading edge of the high pressure turbine stator. The tip clearance size studied in this paper is 2.0mm(2.59% high pressure turbine rotor height, and 2.09% low pressure turbine rotor height). The numerical results show that the hot streak is not mixed out by the time it reaches the exit of high pressure turbine rotor. The separation of colder and hotter fluid is observed at the inlet of low pressure turbine rotor. Most of hotter fluid migrates towards the rotor pressure surface, and only little hotter fluid migrates to the rotor suction surface when it convects into the low pressure turbine rotor. And the hotter fluid migrated to the tip region of the high pressure turbine rotor impinges on the leading edge of the low pressure turbine rotor after it goes through the high pressure turbine rotor. The migration of the hotter fluid directly results in very high heat load at the leading edge of the low pressure turbine rotor. The migration characteristics of the hot streak in the low pressure turbine rotor are dominated by the combined effects of secondary flow and leakage flow at the tip clearance. The leakage flow trends to drive the hotter fluid towards the blade tip on the pressure surface and to the hub on the suction surface, even partial hotter fluid near the pressure surface is also driven to the rotor suction surface through the tip clearance. Compared with the case without rotor tip clearance, the heat load of the low pressure turbine rotor is intensified due to the effects of the leakage flow. And the numerical results also indicate that the leakage flow effect trends to increase the low pressure turbine rotor outlet temperature at the tip region.

This paper deals with the performance analysis and design of impulse turbine for OWC type wave energy plant. Numerical analysis was performed using a commercially-available software FLUENT. This parametric study includes the variation of several important parameters such as the number and shape of blades, hub ratio and tip clearance. Since parametric study at various flow coefficients requires considerable amount of computing tim, two-dimensional analysis was employed to find out optimum principal particulars in rather simple manner. Full three-dimensional calculation was also performed for several test cases to confirm the validity of two-dimensional approach. Up to the present stage, tentative result is well demonstrating the usefulness of 2-D analysis.
