  • Modernization of cities and housing in Malaysia is a reflection of the history of the establishment of colonial trading ports for worldwide maritime trade and exchange. In cosmopolitan cities, new housing typology appeared from the influence of various ethnic immigrants and with the fusion of traditional Malay housing characteristics. This study is to focus on classifying the housing typologies of Malaysia which were formed through the modernization process of cities. The typologies of modern housing in Malaysia can be classified into two categories. The first category is the 'transformation of traditional housing'. The representative typology of this group is the ubiquitous shophouse. The shophouse was originally brought in by the Chinese immigrants from the south coast of China and transformed into the Malaysian urbanscape. The other typology is a detached-house known as the bungalo, which was the housing style combining the Malay traditional timber house and European palazzo. The second category is the 'modern urban housing typology'. Modern urbanization after the independence from the British in 1957 required the maximum utilization of land. To accommodate new social and economic needs, the new typologies were developed in the form of medium-density terrace houses (row houses) and high-density apartment. In the suburban areas, the British terrace house was adopted and developed into unique Malaysian terrace house and semi-detached house based on the British system of land sub division. In premium area of the city, luxurious housing type in the form of high-end condominium is one of the popular housing for upper middle-class and high-class society.

  • This study explores the typology of the urban detached houses in the new housing quarters that were created in the process of Seoul's urbanization in the aftermath of the Korean War. It analyzes and compares the urban tissue and space allocation set when the new urban residential areas were organized according to different methods of production. Based on the comparative analysis of housing built in the same time of 1960s, this study aims to deduce why a specific urban detached housing type was selected as an influential housing prototype and how this spread in later generations. Case study sites selected for this study include: the new Urban Hanok towns of Yongdu-dong, filled with mass Urban Hanoks built by housing developers; the single-family detached housing district of Myunmok-dong, filled with individual dwellings built by private builders; and the housing complex of detached houses in Suyu-dong, developed by government-sponsorship during the early 1960s. Each case examines the following: first, the difference in housing typology allocation according to urban tissue; second, the difference in spatial composition and arrangement within plots. As a result, it was found that differences in typology occur depending on which of the social, cultural, economic and technical factors was preferentially considered in forming urban tissue and allocating buildings in each residential area.

Especially, In this study housing unitplans were in 6 groups such as flexible type, cabin type, free open plan, Raumplan, functional 2-story type and corridor type categorized. And they were analyzed how deeply technological development, architectural design perceptions as well as functional aspects had on the planning of floorplans reflected. As a result, in the housing exhibitions various architectural ideas presented the "Zeitgeist" not only such as improvement of physical environment of housing, but also such as rationalization, standardization, functionalization, normalization of housing architecture. • The purpose of the study is to verify the effect of the Domus type on the modern housing-typology. This article specifies conceptual architectural typology through studying housing types and the changes by comparing experimental results over time since the ancient to the modern times. To successfully establish the purpose of this article, I cited Saussure's verbal methodology of system and representation along with Deleuze's philosophical cause of differentiation and repetition. Also adopting Aldo Rossi's architectural theory of typology, I established theory of housing continuation and alteration. I will compare and analyze particularly the Domus type, Adolf Loos's M$\ddot{u}$ller house, Luis Barragan's house, Le Corbusier's Villa Sovoye, and Mies van der Rohe's Three court house. And I research on the difference between architectural representation of hall and courtyard in modern housing. This research looks to emphasize historical comprehension and practical application of architectural history through housing studies.

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the rationale behind the transformation process of unique shophouse spatial organization in Phnom Penh. We selected 20 representative shophouses located in the Chinese district of Phnom Penh according to construction period. A qualitative study methodology was applied and field surveys were conducted that included interviews with residents, photographs, sketches, measurements, collecting historic photos, and cataloging maps. Selected cases were analyzed in terms of: basic house data, urban block analysis, and unit analysis. Cases were then classified into two types: private courtyard shophouse (PCS) and shared courtyard shophouse (SCS). PCS refers to shophouse typology that maintains most of the characteristics of early shophouses while being transformed into a modern multi-story apartment within a limited one bay plot. However, SCS refers to shophouses adapted from the indigenous forms of PCS that evolved into a multi-storey and multi-family housing typology that includes features that might have been adapted from Western apartment buildings such as sharing a big courtyard, staircase and corridors. We conclude that shophouses in Phnom Penh have positively adopted a Western building typology, adapted it to local traditions, and finally formulated a new building type that represent indicators of a modernization process gradually accepted by society.

  • Small apartment housings in Korea are dissatisfied due to the growing areas and changing lifestyle of the residents. Many of them currently confronted with slum areas and kinds of housing stock accumulated much more in Korean contexts. An extention of the existing small houses could be an adaptation model to the increasing requirement standards of the house residents. The new model could support diverse identification of the dwelling model in a settlement and many residents could be satisfied with the settlement. This paper deals with the unification typology of two dwelling units to one in order to remodel existing small apartment houses on the 15-pyung areas (N type) constructed by Korea National Housing Corporation in Naju. The proposed type of the merging of the dwellings remove concrete panel walls, make a path through balcony and attach a living areas to the front of the houses in order to make a circulation between the dwellings. A stair hall can be located in-between or inside the merged houses. It can also enhance privacy against conflictive activities in a house and possibly provide space appropriate for three-generation living. It can be devided for the multi-family use. Finally, the merging types of two dwelling units into one can be used as a device to get rid of the monotonous characteristics and gain diversity in the declining stock housing.
