The concentration levels of gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) in ambient air have been investigated from a monitoring station located in Yang Jae district of Seoul, Korea for a long-term period covering 1997 through 2002. The mean concentration of Hg, if computed based on its hourly measurement data for this six-year period, was $5.32\pm3.53 ng m^{-3} (N = 27,170)$. The inspection of the diurnal distribution patterns indicated the presence of notably high concentration levels during nighttime relative to daytime (e.g., the mean hourly value as high as $9 ng m^{-3}$ in winter nighttime). When divided seasonally, the highest mean of $6.12 ng m^{-3}$ was also observed during winter followed by spring, fall, and summer. The results of our analysis confirmed the relative dominance of winter (seasonally) or nighttime (diurnally), while exhibiting a complicated trend on a long-term basis. Examination of our data over a different temporal scale consistently indicated that dynamic changes in Hg concentrations occurred through time in line with changes in the strength and diversity of the source processes. It is thus acknowledged that the presence of unusually high Hg levels is the consequence of intense man-made activities, while such signatures can vary in a competitive manner.
Indoor radon has been known as one of the notorious carcinogens. However, a safe environmental criterion of radon has not yet been established in Korea, The main objectives of this study were to study concentration distributions of radon, to trace radon sources in subways, and to obtain a strategy for radon reduction in Seoul metropolitan area. Radon concentrations had been extensively determined by several steps. The first step was to survey radon levels in all of 83 subway stations from October to November in 1991. The second step was to select 40 out of 83 stations and then to study seasonal variations in 1991 and 1992. The third step was to monitor radon levels by hourly-basis plans. The fourth step was to seek a radon reduction strategy by altering ventilation at Ankuk station where had the highest radon concentration during the first measurement step. Each underground floor in the station was divided into 10 sites to measure hourly radon variations. The final step of the study was to measure radon concentrations in groundwater that is one of the possible main sources radon place. The result of the various measuring approaches showed short-and long-term radon variation and indicated radon reduction schemes.
Atmospheric concentrations of radon had been continuously observed in Seoul, Korea since December 1999, as a tracer for long-range transport of air pollutants from China continent to Korea. In order to study radon as a tracer of long-range transport, it is important to know information about the atmospheric distribution and variation of radon concentration and its time variation. Atmospheric radon concentration are measured with electrostatic radon monitor(ERM) at Hanyang University located in Eastern area of Seoul. Air sample is taken into a vessel of ERM, and alpha particles emitted by radon daughters $Po^{218}$ are detected with ZnS(Ag) scintillation counter. Hourly mean concentrations and hourly alpha counts are recorded automatically. The major results obtained from time series observation of atmospheric radon were as follows : (1) The mean of airborne radon concentration in Seoul was found to be $7.62{\pm}4.11\;Bq/m^3$ during December $1999{\sim}January$ 2002. (2) The hourly variation of radon concentrations showed the highest in 8:00AM ($8.66{\pm}4.22\;Bq/m^3$) and the lowest in 3:00AM ($6.62{\pm}3.70\;Bq/m^3$) and 5:00AM ($6.62{\pm}3.39\;Bq/m^3$). (3) the seasonal variation of radon concentrations showed higher during winter-to-fall and lower during summer-to-spring. (4) Correlation between airborne radon concentration and the meteorological factors were -0.21 for temperature, 0.09 for humidity, -0.20 for wind speed, and 0.04 for pressure. (5) The mean difference of airborne radon concentration between Asian dust ($5.36{\pm}1.28\;Bq/m^3$) and non-Asian dust ($4.95{\pm}1.49\;Bq/m^3$) phenomenon was significant (p=0.08). We could identify time series distribution of radon concentration related meteorological factors. In addition, radon can be considered a good natural tracer of vertical dispersion and long-range transport.
This study was conducted to investigate the characteristics of surface ozone concentration and occurrence of high ozone concentration using hourly ozone, nitrogen dioxide and meteorological data for 1997~1998 in Pusan coastal area. Monthly mean ozone concentration was the highest at Dongsamdong in Spring(35.4ppb), at Kwangbokdong in Fall(25.1ppb) and the lowest Dongsamdong(22.2ppb) and Kwangbokdong(16.0ppb) in Winter. Relative standard deviation indicating clearness of observation site was 0.42 at Dongsamdong and 0.49 at Kwangbokdong that is similar to urban area. The diurnal variation of ozone concentration of Dongsamdong and Kwangbokdong showed maximum at 1500~1600LST and minimum 0700~0800LST that typical pattern of ozone concentration. In ozone episode period(Sept. 10~15, 1998), diurnal change of ozone concentration was very high, and ozone concentration was related to meteorological parameters such as temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, cloud amount and radiation on a horizontal surface. During the episode days peak ozone concentrations are much higher than the normal values, wind speeds are always lower, and solar radiation is high with the exception of the September episode.
Purpose of this study is to find out proper means of estimating the urinary mercury excretion in the normal individuals. Whole void volume was collected every 2 hours beginning from 6 o'clock in the morning until 6 o'clock next morning. Mercury excretion in each urine specimen was measured by NIOSH recommended dithizone colorimetric method (Method No.: P & CAM 145). Urinary concentration of mercury was adjusted by two means: specific gravity of 1.024 and a gram of creatinine excretion per liter of urine comparing the data with the unadjusted ones. Mercury excretion in 24-hour urine specimen was calculated by adding the amounts measured with the hourly collected specimens of each individual. Statistical analysis of the urinary mercury excretion revealed the following results: 1. Frequency distribution curve of mercury excreted in urine of hourly specimens was best fitted to power function expressed in the form of $y=ax^b$. Adjustment of the urinary mercury concentration by creatinine excretion was shown to be superior($y=1674x^{-1.52},\;r^2=0.95$) over nonadjustment($y=2702x^{-1.57},\;r^2=0.92$) and adjustment by specific gravity of 1.024($y=4535x^{-1.66},\;r^2=0.93$). 2. Both log-transformed mercury excretion in hourly voided specimens and mercury excretion itself in 24 hour specimens showed the normal distributions. 3. The frequency distribution of mercury adjusting the urinary concentration of mercury by creatinine excretion was best fitted to a theoretical normal distribution with the sample means and standard deviation than those unadjusted or adjusted with specific gravity of 1.024. 4. Average urinary mercury excretions in 24-hour urine specimen in an individual were as follows: a) Unadjusted mercury excretion mean and standard deviation : $$18.6{\pm}13.68{\mu}gHg/l$$. median : $$16.0\;{\mu}gHg/l$$. range : $$0.0-55.10\;{\mu}gHg/l$$. b) Adjusted with specific gravity mean : $$20.7{\pm}11.76\;{\mu}gHg/l{\times}\frac{0.024}{S.G-1.000}$$ median : $$20.7\;{\mu}gHg/l{\times}\frac{0.024}{S.G-1.000}$$ range : $$0.0-52.9\;{\mu}gHg/l{\times}\frac{0.024}{S.G-1.000}$$ c) Adjusted with creatinine excretion mean and standard deviation : $$10.5{\pm}6.98\;{\mu}gHg/g$$ creatinine/l median : $$9.4\;{\mu}gHg/g$$ creatinine/l range : $$0.0-26.7\;{\mu}gHg/g$$ creatinine/l 5. No statistically significant differences were found between means calculated from 24-hour urine specimens and those from hourly specimens transformed into logarithmic values. (P<0.05).

In order to assess the chronic impact of tropospheric ozone on vegetation in the Seoul metropolitan area, it is necessary to quantify ozone exposure. Two ozone indices commonly used to relate ozone exposure to injury of vegetation were calculated. SUM06(SUM of hourly concentrations at or above 0.06 ppm) and AOT40(Accumulated exposure Over a Threshold of 40 ppb) which are widely used as ozone indices in the US and Europe were calculated based on hourly ozone concentrations in 5 areas of Seoul and 5 cities of Kyunggido during 1990~1997. Most SUM06 levels were 1~5ppm.hr, however several areas in Northern and Eastern Seoul reached about 5~7 ppm.hr in 1996~1997. AOT40 values were as high as 17~24 ppm.hr. Although measured SUM06 levels would not be expected to significantly impact vegetation, the overall ozone index, as well as annual average, 95th, and 99th percentile have increased continuously over the last 8 years. Often, ozone concentrations are lower in cities where there is a significant NOx concentration, than in outlying rural agricultural areas where NOx scrubbing is not as important. Concentrations greater than 40 ppb, which can cause chronic ozone toxicity to vegetation, were found mostly in the summer and constitutued about 5~15% of total hourly ozone cocentrations.
Sediment yields from Imha watershed were simulated during 1993-2008 using Hydrologic Simulation Program-Fortran (HSPF). Using observed daily stream flow for 2004-2008 and hourly suspended solid concentration for three events during 2006, HSPF was calibrated and validated at the sites of Imha and Youngyang for stream flow and Dongchun and Jangpachun for sediment yield. The calibration and validation results represented high model efficiency for simulating daily stream flow and hourly suspended solid. The determination coefficients of calibration and validation were 0.90 and 0.81 for daily stream flow, and 0.91 and 0.86 for monthly stream flow, respectively. Based on model tolerances for calibration and validation of stream flow, HSPF performance for simulating stream flow represented 'very good'. The determination coefficients of calibration and validation were 0.94-0.96 and 0.95 for hourly sediment yields, respectively. The average yearly sediment yield during 1993-2008 was 122,290 ton/year and most of sediment yield (77 % of total yield) were generated from June to August. The calibrated HSPF simulated well the movement of water and eroded soil within Imha watershed.
[ $NO_2$ ] concentration characteristics of Busan metropolitan city was analysed by statistical method using hourly $NO_2$ concentration data$(1998\~2000)$ collected from air quality monitoring sites of the metropolitan city. 4 representative regions were selected among air quality monitoring sites of Ministry of environment. Concentration data of $NO_2$, 5 air pollutants, and data collected at AWS was used. Both Stepwise Multiple Regression model and ARIMA model for prediction of $NO_2$ concentrations were adopted, and then their results were compared with observed concentration. While ARIMA model was useful for the prediction of daily variation of the concentration, it was not satisfactory for the prediction of both rapid variation and seasonal variation of the concentration. Multiple Regression model was better estimated than ARIMA model for prediction of $NO_2$ concentration.
Mixing zone characteristics of the wastewater effluents discharged from an ocean outfall have been investigated using an outfall mixing zone analysis method. This analysis was applied to Sokcho ocean outfall case and was used to simulate the concentration distribution of wastewater effluents. Hourly concentration distributions of outfall effluent discharges were averaged for the period of 15 days. The results show that near-field dilution was relatively high with the dilution of 130 for the winter season.
