In a gas engine based cogeneration system, heat is recovered from two parts, which are jacket water and exhaust gas. The heat from the jacket water is often recovered by a plate type heat exchanger and used for the room heating and/or hot water supply. Depending on the operating conditions of engine and heat recovery system, there should be imbalance in the flow rate and supply pressure between engine and heat recovery side of the heat exchanger. The imbalance cause the deformation of the plate, which affects the pressure drop characteristics. In the present study, the pressure drop inside the heat exchanger has been investigated in a 1/5 scaled test rig and compare with the experimental correlations, which are used for the design.

Simulation was conducted using TRNSYS to evaluate the thermal performance of a facility. This facility has a condensing-type heat exchanger which is able to recover the latent energy for the purpose of reducing the heating energy in winter. The boiler and chiller are selected based on the annual peak loads and controlled to maintain the facility at the set temperature of 14~$17^\circ{C}$. Supplied energy by the boiler and recovered energy by the heat exchanger were calculated as a function of number of pass through heat exchanger, kind of fuel and hot water velocity. Simulation results show that about 20% of the total heating load can be recovered by the heat exchanger and the amount of latent heat is increasing with the number of pass. This means that the efficiency of the waste energy recovery system can be increased by using a condensing-type heat exchanger rather than a traditional sensible heat exchanger.
Most researches done on heat pumps have been on heat pumps for refrigeration, cooling and heating. There is therefore the need for more research on hot water heat pumps, especially for high temperature. Even though the cascade heat pump cycle has a great potential more efficient hot water generation even at low evaporating temperatures, it has been researched least for this purpose. In this study, the heating performance of a variable speed cascade heat pump was investigated by varying operating conditions. For the same heating capacity values, it was found that increasing the low stage compressor speed was more suitable for enhancing the performance of the system to get a higher temperature.
The utilization of unused energy is important because it can afford to offer a chance to increase energy efficiency of a heat pump system. One of the promising unused energy sources is river water. It can be used as a heat source in both heating and cooling effectively with its superior features as a secondary working fluids. In this study, the performance of a 5HP heat pump system using river water as a heat source is investigated by both experiment and simulation. According to system simulation results, performance improvement of condenser seems more effective than that of evaporator for better $COP_H$. The serial connection is also preferred among several methods to improve plate type heat exchanger performance. The experimental results show that the hot water of $50{\sim}60^{\circ}C$ can be acquired from water heat source of $5{\sim}9^{\circ}C$ with $COP_H$ of $2.7{\sim}3.5$.
Recently, in order to prevent increasing energy usages in the international community, many countries have attempted to develop the innovative renewable energy systems. Among the renewable energy systems, Ground source heat pump(GSHP) system which supply the heating, cooling and hot water in the building has been attracted by its stability of heat production and high efficiency. However, the initial drilling costs become very expensive and the construction period takes longer the other systems, because GSHP system needs more than 100 m depth drilling. In this study, in order to reduce initial costs of the GSHP, the building integrated geothermal system using the horizontal heat exchanger was developed. The heating and cooling load in the standard housing model was calculated by a simulation and the system design capacity in the high-rise apartment was decided by the total load. Based on the system design capacity, the high-rise apartments were applied to a BIGS and vertical GSHP system and there are analyzed about initial costs. In the result, the initial cost of BIGS could reduce 24% of the initial cost of the vertical GSHP system.
Condensing gas boiler units may make a big role for the reduction of energy consumption in heating industries. In order to decrease the energy consumption of a condensing gas boiler unit, the effective operations and controls of the system are necessary. In this study, mathematical models of a condensing gas boiler system were developed and programmed in order to predict dynamic behaviors of the system. These include dynamic models for a blower, a gas valve, a pump, a burner, a boiler heat exchanger, and a hot water heat exchanger. Control algorithms for the control of a gas valve, a blower, and a pump were also assumed. Simulation results showed good predictions of the dynamic phenomena of a boiler system. Therefore, the simulation program developed for this study may be effectively used for the development of control algorithms of the boiler system.
Floor panel heating system using hot water is the primary heating system of domestic residential building. This paper presents the results of performance analysis of the heat pump system with air source evaporator and single unit dual sink(SUDSk) condenser. The heat exchanger combines two separated condensers into a single condenser and the object of the SUDSk condenser is to release energy to dual sinks, i.e. air for air heating system and water for panel heating system in one single unit. Simulation program is developed for single unit dual source(SUDS) SUDSk heat pump system and some experimental data are obtained and compared with simulation results. Differences of heating capacity and COP in dual source operating mode are 7% and 8% respectively. Simulation results are in good agreement with test results. Therefore, developed program is effectively used for design and performance prediction of dual source dual sink heat pump system with SUDS evaporator and SUDSk condenser.
The present study concerns the annual performance evaluation of a hybrid-renewable energy system with geothermal and solar heat sources for hot water, heating and cooling of the residential buildings. The hybrid energy system consists of ground source heat pump of 2 RT for cooling, solar collectors of $4.8m^2$, storage tank of 250 liters and gas fired backup boiler of 11.6 kW. The averaged coefficients of performance of geothermal heat pump system during cooling and heating seasons are measured as 4.1 and 3.5, respectively. Also solar fraction for hot water is measured as 35 percent. Overall, the results shows that the hybrid-renewable energy system satisfactorily operated under all climatic conditions.
