A Study on the Filling Imbalances between Multi-Cavity in Hot-Runner Mold (핫러너 금형에서 다수 캐비티 사이에 발생하는 충전불균형에 관한 연구)

  • Recently plastic parts are molded for the purpose of mass production in multi-cavity system. Therefore, designer is usually designing mold that has geometrically balanced runner lay-out for filling balance at each cavity. Although, mold is manufactured with geometrically balanced runner lay-out, there are actually filling imbalances in the cavities. These filling imbalances phenomenon are caused by complicated interaction between melt and mold. In this study, based on previous studies for filling imbalances in cold-runner mold, filling imbalances in hot-runner mold were investigated by CAE and injection molding experiments. ABS and PMMA as amorphous polymer, PA as crystalline polymer were used to compare the filling imbalances. There were different results of CAE and experiment. The filling imbalances decreased as injection rate increased without regard to kind of resins and were lower than the one of cold-runner.

  • For mass production of plastics, injection molds have multi-cavities. However, filling imbalance between cavity to cavity always has occurred in multi-cavities mold, and this has caused low quality of plastics part. In this study, the closed-loop-control system which can control temperature of hot manifold and nozzle in hot runner mold for filling balance has been suggested, and a series of experiment about difference of filling time and weight in cavity-to-cavity was conducted. As a result of using closed-loop-control system, a remarkable improvement in reducing filling imbalance was confirmed.

However, even though geometrically balanced runner is used, filling imbalance have been observed. Filling imbalance could be decreased by modifying processing conditions such as injections rate, mold temperature, injection pressure, melt temperature that are related to shear, viscosity. In this study, a series of experiment was conducted to investigate filling imbalance variation when modifying runner layout and ploymer and to determine which processing condition influences as the primary cause of filling imbalance in geometrically balanced runner system. The filling imbalance was desreased up to result range of $3{\leq}DFI{\leq}8(%)$ by using a new runner system for balanced filling.

  • The paper presents our study of development for multi-cavity preform mold system which consists of hot runner system and valve gate. For this purpose, stretching blow molding process and preform injection process were simulated by Polyflow and Moldflow. Based on various results of the preform injection process analysis, process planning was established. The sectional thickness distribution of preform was optimized. Preform injection mold system was designed by these technical analysis data. Finally, 24-cavity preform mold system was successfully developed.

  • Plastic gears are more and more widely used in many industrial machine elements. Plastic gear has higher properties such as light weight, wear resistance, and vibration absorbing ability than metallic gears. But, in case of using an inaccurate plastic gear, its tooth breakage happen and fatigue life is shortened due to increase of applying load and temperature rising on the tooth flank. Inaccuracy of plastic gears such as pitch circle roundness and tooth profile generates vibration and noise. In this study, an internal plastic gears which is molded by a new injection mold structure are developed. The new mold structure is called the HR3P(hot runner type 3plate mold) that has an improved runner system in order to have good filling balance. As a result from this study, an internal gear with very accurate roundness was developed by using design of experiment.

  • A large plastic molding requires an injection molding with a large clamping force. However, it could not be prepared in the manufacturing at any time. In order to solve the problem, the injection molding analysis study was conducted on the back cover of 55 inch LED TV. The study compared the case of applying the existing flow system such as hot runner, the improvement of the hot runner lay-out and the precise control of the gate operation time, From the results of using the improved flow system, it was found that the welding and the clamping force were considerably improved as compared with before the improvement. In particular, the clamping force was reduced by 50% compared with before the improvement.
