  • The recent technical trend in hot rolling of steel can be described as process and product technologies which have been progressed with modern mill equipment and computers. Precise gauge and width control can be achieved by up-to-date control methods such as AGC and AWC systems. Roll benders and various shape control systems enabled high quality flatness and crown control. Mills can produce higher tensile materials by new process based on process metallurgy. The use of high speed steel rolls and on line roll grinders make the schedule free rolling easier which results in cost saving. Process itself goes toward continuous and simple flow type which has lower operation. Endless rolling and strip casting are examples of the trend. Materials with higher tensile strength and various functions have been developed in last years to meet the customer's needs and this trend will continue.

  • This paper proposes a looperless tension control algorithm which is robust to disturbance and tensional variation in rolling process using SVR(Support Vector Regression). Hot rolling process which is global technology to coil steel after continuous finishing process for welded bars followed by roughing mill process, becomes hot issue. Finishing mill process not only makes it possible to produce ultra thin steel strip(0.8 mm) but enhance the quality of terminals of coil, which increases the productivity due to faster process. Constant tension control between stands in hot rolling process is essential to enhance the quality of steel. Sensorless tension control is under research by some advanced companies to replace the conventional tension control method because in continuous finishing mill process, it is impossible to install the looper used in conventional control system. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

  • To have high flatness quality of hot rolled strip in the hot strip finishing mill train, a new inter-stand tension profile measuring device of segmented looper roll type(coined as Flatness Sensing Inter-stand Looper, FlatSIL) and a new flatness control system have been developed in this study. The device measures the strip tension profile across the strip width and informs the strip wave pattern to new flatness control system where work roll bending mode to relieve the strip wave is determined. The existing automatic shape control system which uses laser type shape-meter installed at the outlet of the last finishing mill stand strip tension between down coiler and last finishig mill since the latent wave concealed by the strip tension between down coiler and last finishing mill stand cannot be measured by the laser distance-meter. Thus the existing shape control system is not able to control the flatness through the full strip length. The new flatness control system, however, works for full strip length during strip rolling as far as the tension profile measuring device and work roll bender are on. With the new flatness control system, work roll bender is automatically controller to minimize the latent wave of the running strip and the flatness quality as well as strip travelling stability has been noticeably improved from strip head through body to tail.

  • A new steel-making process, strip-casting, is introduced. The strip-casting is a new technique making the thin steel strip from the molten steel directly without resorting to repetitive reheating and hot-rolling required in a conventional steel-making method. This paper derives the mathematical model of strip caster, proposes a control strategy for stable startup operation and a fuzzy decision making rule for automatic control mode change in strip-casting process.

  • This paper presents a new approach for the analysis of hot strip rolling processes. The approach is based on the finite element method and capable of predicting velocity field in the strip, temperature field in the strip, temperature field in the roll, and roll pressure. Basic finite element formulations for heat transfer analysis are described with emphasis on the treatment of numerical instability resulting from a standard Galerkin formulation. Comparison with the theoretical solutions found in the literature is made for the evaluation of the accuracy of the temperature solutions. An iterative scheme is developed for dealing with strong correlations between the metal flow characteristics and the thermal behavior of the roll-strip system. A series of process simulations are carried out to investigate the effect of various process parameters including interface friction, interface heat transfer coefficient, roll speed, reduction in thickness, and spray zone. The results are shown and discussed.

  • VCR is a back-up roll with a special contour which leads to the length of the contact line between back-up roll and work becones self adjustable in accordance with the width of the strip. The simulation of a finite element model and the on-line test at production mill demonstrate that the VCR roll may keep the crown of the roll gap relatively stable, and at same time, permit the rolling pressure to be adjusted over a wider range, and increase the effect of work roll bending on the roll gap. The VCR rolls have been successfully used at the first stands of two largest cold rolling mills in China, and on-line test has been done at a wide hot strip finishing train. The use of VCR roll has created favorable conditions for subsequent rolling passes and the achievement of better flatness quality.

  • Investigations of the fatigue damage of roughing mill roll and experimentally. By the computer simulation for analysing the stresses on the roll surface and experimental hot rolling, the following results were drawn : The crakcs observed on the roll surface were initiated thermally in the initial stage of the rolling and propagated by repeated thermal and bending stresses. The size of the roll surface cracks smaller than 4.87mm could avoid the occurrence of tiny scab, surface defect of hot steel strip. Since the size of surface cracks observed on the roughing mill roll was very small, the fatigue damage of roll surface was found not to be the major factor for the formation of the scab.

  • This paper studies on the new control algorithm for the mass-flow stabilization in strip head part of a hot strip mill. A new strip tension model in the strip head part is derived using the current deviation of two neighboring stands. The current deviation means a difference between a measured current and a lock-on current, where the lock-on current is set up when a strip tension or a looper angle reaches each target value or time is about 0.4sec, respectively. On the basis of the tension calculation model, a mill velocity of a backward stand is controlled to stabilize a strip mass-flow by PI control algorithm. Therefore, the mass-flow control for strip head part is executed from a metal-in time into a foreward stand till the looper works normally. It is known by the results of a computer simulation and an experiment that the proposed control algorithm is very effective in stabilizing the mass flow of the strip head part.

  • This paper proposes a precise mathematical model for the prediction of the variation of the roll force across a strip in cold rolling. It further describes the deformation characteristics of the strip using a 3-D finite element method. The different features of hot rolling and cold rolling through a 3-D finite element method are shown. The predicted roll force profile and tension profile are verified through comparison with the prediction from a 3-D finite element method.

  • According to the number of cold-rolled coils, the amount of roll wear and thermal expansion, and roll gap profile were calculated, by using the actual data from the finishing mill. Also, based on those data, the calculations of the deflection, the flattening, and the contact pressure of vwork rolls and backup rolls were made respectively. Specially, in the calculation of contact pressure, the numerical results were obtained not only during the normal rolling, but also during the abnormal rolling, by modeling mathematically the dynamic impact force which occurs when the head section of the strip is threading through rolls. With those results the growth of the fatigue region and the fatigue damage of rolls were predicted. Also the optimum roll-grinding depth was determined to maximize the roll life.
