  • The hardness of laser weldments has been predicted by using several carbon equivalent equations and estimation models. In this study, authors extended the model to boron steel sheets which are adopted for the hot press forming process. four kinds of boron steels with the strengths from 1500 MPa to 1900 MPa were considered and the hardness profiles of weldments was measured from the experiments of this study and the references. The traditional "Kaizu" equation could predict the hardness with an accuracy of -4.9% error although the Kaizu equation does not consider the boron content. Modified carbon equivalents were suggested by adding a term as like 5B or 14B into the Kaizu equation, and it could improve the accuracy of the prediction model.

  • Among the various manufacturing processes of composites, the tape lay-up process of thermoset prepreg has many advantages compared to autoclave or hot press forming. It has a high potential to process automation and continuous fabrication .. Fiber placement developed as a logical combination of filament winding and automated tape placement to overcome some of the limitations of each manufacturing method. Fiber placement uses a compaction device to apply direct contact between the incoming materials in the fiber placement head and Heat is added to the materials at the nip point of the compaction roller. This paper will discuss property of thermoset composite as compaction and heat effect in Automated fiber placement

  • The formed tool is used to machine the unique shape of rubber seal for geometrical shaping and reduction of cutting time. The bearing rubber seal produced by hot press forming has complex geometry for the complex geometrical shape to prevent leakage of lubricant oil and influx of the dust effectively. Because it is difficult to machine the unique shape exactly by the conventional tool, the formed tool is used in machining mold of the seal. In this paper, It is performed for selection of the formed tool to investigate cutting edge wear, cutting force, and surface quality. Also, an efficient high precision machining is proposed on the experiment data.

  • Aspheric polymer lens fabrication using isothermal compression molding is presented in this paper. Due to increasing definition of an image sensor, higher precision is required by a lens which can be used as a part of an imageforming optical module. Injection molding is a factory standard method for a polymer optical lens. But achievable precision using injection molding has a formidable limitation due to the machining of complex mold structure and melting and cooling down a polymer melt under high pressure condition during forming process. To overcome the precision requirement and limitation using injection molding method, isothermal compression molding is applied to fabrication of a polymer optical lens. The fabrication condition is determined by numerical simulations of temperature distribution and given material properties. Under the found condition, the lens having a high precision can successfully be reproduced and does not show birefringence which results often in optical degradation.

  • The effect of exit temperature on the thickness of recrystallization layer during Al extrusion process was investigated. The recrystallization layer of an extruded Al alloy is an important feature of the product in a wide range of applications, particularly those within the automotive industry. The thicker recrystallized layer in the Al alloys can give rise to a number of problems including reduced fatigue resistance and orange peel during cold forming. But the interaction of extrusion process variables with the thickness of recrystallization layer is poorly understood, and there is limited information available regarding the role of the main hot extrusion variables. Using the 3650 US ton extrusion press, this paper describes the effect of the main process variables such as billet temperature, ram speed, and exit temperature on the thickness of recrystallization layer for the A6XXX Al alloy.

  • A tailor welded blank (TWB) is a welded blank comprised of two or more sheets with different properties - thickness, strengths or formabilities. TWBs are applied to the body panels to reduce weight and cost of the part. In this research, ultra high strength steel and high ductility steel were joined and laser tailor welded blanks were implemented. Yb:YAG laser welding tests were conducted with various welding conditions, and mechanical and geometrical characteristics of weldments were evaluated.

  • As GA (Hot dip galvannealed steel sheet) has good corrosion resistance, weldability and paintability as well as excellent formability, it's demand is rapidly increasing for automotive panels. The GA coated layers are composed of several kinds of brittle Fe-Zn Metallic compounds which are susceptible to powdering during the press forming, however, very careful controls of manufacturing conditions such as galvannealing heat-treatment or bath composition are essential to meet with the required quality of automotive use. In this study the required characteristics of automotive panel are practically surveyed in detail and the appropriate manufacturing conditions of galvannealing or bath composition have experimentally investigated by using the various analyzing and simulating equipments. The result in this study indicated that the corrosion resistance at the cut edges was improved by increasing of coating weight and decreasing of thickness of sheet steels.

  • In this paper, we describe a new method to form polymer thin films, in which carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are homogeneously distributed so that they can strengthen the mechanical property of resulting polymer film. To do so, we first homogeneously mixed CNTs with polymer in a DMF solvent. With the assistance of ultrasonic nebulizer, the polymer/CNT solution was then aerosolized into micro-sized droplets and finally turned into solidified polymer/CNT composite particles by gas-phase drying process. As the results of SEM and TEM analysis, CNTs were found to be homogeneously immobilized in the polymer matrix particles due to rapid drying process in the gas phase. For comparison purpose, (i) the polymer/CNTs composite particles prepared by aerosol processing method and (ii) polymer/CNTs sheets prepared by simple solution-evaporation method were employed to form polymer/CNTs composite thin films using a hot press. As the result, the aerosol processing of composite particles was found to be a much more effective method to form homogeneously distributed-CNTs in the polymer matrix thin film.

  • To study the stress concentration factors (SCFs) of concrete-filled tubular Y-joints subject to in-plane bending, experiments were used to investigate the hot spot stress distribution along the intersection between chord and brace. Three concrete-filled tubular chords forming Y-joints were tested with different reinforcing components, including doubler-plate, sleeve, and haunch-plate reinforcement. In addition, an unreinforced joint was also tested for comparison. Test results indicate that the three different forms of reinforcement effectively reduce the peak SCFs compared with the unreinforced joint. The current research suggests that the linear extrapolation method can be used for chords, whereas the quadratic extrapolation method must be used for braces. The SCF is effectively reduced and more evenly distributed when the value of the axial compression ratio in the chord is increased. Furthermore, the SCFs obtained from the test results were compared to predictions from some well-established SCF equations. Generally, the predictions from those equations are very consistent for braces, but very conservative for concrete-filled chords.
