Future of Virtual Reality and Metaverse in Hospitality and Tourism Management: An Industry Perspective

  • Digital transformation plays a critical role in making hospitality and tourism organizations create new business processes and customer experiences. The hospitality and tourism industry thrives on creating unique experiences by offering exceptional and innovative customer services through innovative digital technologies. Thus, this study provides an overview of the current use of these technologies in the hospitality industry and their potential advantages and opportunities. In particular, the metaverse and immersive virtual reality (VR) technology are gaining popularity in the hospitality industry, offering new opportunities for innovation and driving core values. This study discusses the current use of VR and metaverse and potential advantages and opportunities for researchers and practitioners in the hospitality and tourism context. Thus, we provide suggestions and implications for hospitality and tourism industry stakeholders to increase core values and business performance and create sustainable competitive advantages over other market players through VR and metaverse.

Strangers and Hospitality in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (메어리 셸리의 『프랑켄슈타인』에 나타난 이방인과 환대의 문제)

  • This paper explores the issue of strangers and of hospitality in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, based on Kant's concept of hospitality as "the right of a stranger" and on Derrida's discussion of hospitality. It first examines the similarities between the domestic relations within the Frankenstein family and Frankenstein's relation to the monster: an effort to create unity out of a multiplicity of elements, and what can be called a "debt economy." Then, reading the animation scene of the monster as a version of the advent of a stranger, it deals with the question of hospitality. More specifically, the arrival of Clerval immediately follows the animation of the monster because it effectively dramatizes the paradox that there is no hospitality without hostility. The opposition and the apposition between hospitality and hostility are also seen in the De Lacey family's welcoming Safie and rejecting the monster. Frankenstein's failure and the De Lacey family's failure to welcome the monster show that hospitality as "right" exemplified by Kantian hospitality does not apply to a stranger like the monster who has neither name nor relation and who is categorized into what Derrida terms "an absolute other." This paper also looks at Safie's problematic subversion against her father, which loses its subversive charge in the context of racial relations between Turkish Mahometans and European Christians. Safie's father looms large in the context of the issue of hospitality because his episode suggests that the category of race causes hospitality to malfunction.

Study of Hospitality Security (Hospitality Security의 학문적 고찰)

  • Safety is considered as a very important factor when tourists select tourist spots, which means that the desire for safety in the tourism industry is very high. Therefore, a specialized field for the safety of the tourism industry is necessary. Already, there are staff members who are responsible for safety in various tourism sectors, but they have been led through knowledge based on work experience without professional education. In order to train specialists who are responsible for the safety of the tourism industry, research in related fields is indispensable, and universities in charge of research and education systematically construct surveys of related fields, and through experts I have to train. In the field meaning tourism security, there is Hospitality Security. Hospitality means 'to hospitality', 'to be entertaining', Hospitality Industry is used to cover the tourism industry in its exhaustive sense. Security is a term that refers to safety and security. Therefore, Hospitality Security which the two meanings together, that is, korean word hospitality security, tourism security can be said. Already in the US experts in the field of Hospitality Security explained the importance through related books. Currently in Korea, well-known tourism related universities operate subjects in the Hospitality field, and the security field also manages subjects at several universities. So, We collected the subjects managed at each university, analyzed them, and selected subjects of Hospitality Security. If the results of research through continuous research accumulate, the value as academic will be further increased, and it will be possible to have a role responsible for the safety of the tourism industry by producing experts accordingly.

Green Growth and Sustainability: The Role of Tourism, Travel and Hospitality Service Industry in Korea

  • Purpose - The study investigates the influence of tourism and hospitality industry on economic growth and CO2 emissions. Research design, data, and methodology - In the empirical analysis, unit root tests, cointegration test and vector error correction model regression using time series data of South Korea from the first quarter of 1970 to the third quarter of 2010 are performed to examine the long-run equilibrium relationship and short-run dynamics among the tourism and hospitality industry, CO2 emissions, economic growth and other industry sectors. Results - Results indicate that a long-run equilibrium relationship exists among these variables. Furthermore, the tourism and hospitality industry and CO2 emissions have high significant positive effect on economic growth. The tourism and hospitality industry in Korea, in turns, shows a high significant positive impact on economic growth while the industry sector incursa high significant negative impact on CO2 emissions. Conclusions - The tourism and hospitality industry in Korea may havebeen prompted by several factors such as accelerated process of technological innovation or energy and environmental policies. These findings suggest that the effectively managed tourism and hospitality sector in Korea has resulted in both economic growth and a reduction in CO2 emissions.

Do Firm Characteristics and Industry Matter in Determining Corporate Cash Holdings? Evidence from Hospitality Firms

  • The study investigates a recent surge of cash literature by using a sample of hospitality firms to gain a new understanding of corporate cash holdings. Past literature states that there is a substantial variation of liquidity across industry groups. Existing literature predominantly refers to US-listed firms and focus on either hotels or restaurants and not the hospitality industry as a whole. Therefore, we provide a comparative study of cash holdings behaviour between hospitality and non-hospitality firms from an emerging market context. Using a sample of public listed hospitality firms from 2002 to 2013, dynamic panel regression techniques are used to study the relationships between firm characteristics and cash levels. Also, the non-parametric Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney test was carried out to examine the time and sectoral differences in cash holdings. In addition, the panel regression techniques are used to investigate the relationships between firm characteristics and level of corporate cash holdings. The results reveal that firm characteristics do matter in hospitality firms. We find that firm size, capital expenditures, and liquid assets substitutes are negatively related to cash level. The results support trade-off theory and the pecking order theory. This study incrementally explains the cash holdings behaviour of hospitality firms in emerging market.

Online Platform Experience: Enhancing Customer Engagement and Loyalty in the Hospitality Industry (온라인 플랫폼 경험: 호스피탈리티 고객 인게이지먼트 및 로열티 향상 방안)

  • This study aims to develop a conceptual framework linking antecedents and consequences of online platform experience in the context of hospitality businesses. In doing so, an introduction to online platform experience in the hospitality industry was made, and environmental stimuli, that is, enablers of online platform experience were identified: information, entertainment and relation. Additionally, the theoretical review attempted to explain how customers are likely to be engaged in, and to be loyal to, the hospitality organizations' provisions in the context of online platforms. When presenting the theoretical model, a Stimulus-Organism-Response paradigm was employed to propose the hypotheses predicting positive online platform experience, which seems to derive from internally provoked cognition and affection within individuals, leading to behavioral consequences. This model is expected to be applicable to the online context, where hospitality businesses tend to adopt the concept of gamification and to implement associated loyalty programs. Finally, theoretical and practical implications, along with potential avenues of future research, were discussed.

  • The impacts that AI and robotics systems can and will have on our everyday lives are already making themselves manifest. However, there is a lack of research on the ethical impacts and means for amelioration regarding AI and robotics within tourism and hospitality. Given the importance of designing technologies that cross national boundaries, and given that the tourism and hospitality industry is fundamentally predicated on multicultural interactions, this is an area of research and application that requires particular attention. Specifically, tourism and hospitality have a range of context-unique stakeholders that need to be accounted for in the salient design of AI systems is to be achieved. This paper adopts a stakeholder approach to develop the conceptual framework to centralize human values in designing and deploying AI and robotics systems in tourism and hospitality. The conceptual framework includes several layers - 'Human-human-AI' interaction level, direct and indirect stakeholders, and the macroenvironment. The ethical issues on each layer are outlined as well as some possible solutions to them. Additionally, the paper develops a research agenda on the topic.

  • Substantial growth in the economy and extensive use of natural resources has become a major issue in the modern world. Organizations have started to worry about the environment and are beginning to invest in and practice green strategies. Companies should be responsible for the environment and use sustainable methods to run their businesses. The main purpose of this study is to explore the conceptual approach to Green Human Resource Management (GHRM) practices and Corporate Environmental Responsibility (CER) in the hospitality industry. The theoretical framework of GHRM practices such as green recruitment, green selection, green training and development, green performance appraisal, green reward and compensation, and corporate environmental responsibility have been comprehensively studied for this purpose. Green Human Resource Management in the hospitality sector is a less studied and rarely implemented phenomenon. The integration of GHRM and CER along with green competitive advantage and green supply chain management in hospitality is new concept in hospitality industry. Study suggests that Corporate environmental responsibility (CER) and Green Human Resource Management (GHRM) have a significant role in the hospitality industry. However, for sustainable development of tourism and hospitality, this concept should be capitalized with necessary research and development.

  • This study examines the awareness of the curriculum of the cabin service major students at 2 year colleges through the CIPP (Context, Input, Process, Product) evaluation model and an empirical analysis on how their awareness affects Service Orientation and Service Hospitality. It was proven that the CIPP evaluation model has a positive effect on the satisfaction of their department, and also has a meaningful effect on Service Hospitality and Service Orientation statistically. However, the satisfaction of their department itself is not associated with the increase of Service Orientation and Service Hospitality so it negatively affected them. Moreover, both the Service Management program(Process) and Service Attitude(Product) have a meaningful effect on Service Hospitality, and Service Hospitality also has a meaningful effect on Service Orientation. So it resulted in a casual relationship among them. As a result, it is desperately necessary to promote an educational environment that will increase the satisfaction of the department and help students to become flight attendants. It is also necessary to increase awareness of the Service Management program(Process) and Service Attitude(Product).
