  • In this paper, the optimum design of ultrasonic dry cleaning head was investigated. The transducer instead of mechanical dynamic structure was used to generate ultrasonic wave and the horn-shape amplifier was utilized to solve the energy decaying problem of ultrasonic wave with propagating it through the media. The analyses of ultrasonic wave and a fluid for the selected structure of a cleaning head were carried out using SYSNOISE and ANSYS simulators, respectively. Based on simulator results, the distance between a horn and the substrate of 4 mm and the horn diameter of 10 mm were determined to maximize the energy of ultrasonic waves. The cooling structure was also considered to reduce the heat from the transducer and the horn. The equivalent circuit for the fabricated horn was deduced from HP4194A impedance/gain/phase analyzer and the frequency of an ultrasonic wave of 20.25 kHz was confirmed using the parameters of the equivalent circuit.

  • In this paper, a novel design method for an ultra-wide band TEM horn antenna is proposed on the basis of parallel plate waveguide theory. A principle of TEM modes generation is analyzed and the characteristics of this antenna are experimentally investigated. The proposed TEM horn antenna has an exponentially tapered structure to increase matching bandwidth. Also, the designed TEM horn has shortened length but increased aperture so that the bandwidth for cutoff frequency is increased. The measured result show that the proposed TEM hem antenna has the frequency band of 75 MHz to 1200 MHz for VSWR less than 2.0 and the bandwidth of the TEM horn becomes more than twice comparing to that of a linearly tapered TEM hem. It is anticipated that the manufactured antenna is applicable to UWB systems for impulse response measurement.

  • Most ultrasonic vibration cutting tools are operated at the resonance condition of the longitudinal vibration of the structure consisting of booster, horn and bite. In this study, a transverse vibration tool with beam shape is designed to utilize the vibration characteristics of the beam. Design point of the transverse vibration tool is to match the resonance frequency of the bite to the frequency of the signal to excite the piezoelectric element in the booster. The design process to match the natural frequency of the longitudinal vibration mode of the horn and that of the transverse vibration mode of the bite is presented. Dimensions of the horn and bite are searched by trend analysis through which the standard shapes of the horn and bite are determined. After the dimensions of each component of the cutting tool consisting of booster, horn and bite are determined, the assembled structure was experimentally tested to verify that true resonant condition is achieved and proper vibrational displacement are obtained to ensure that enough cutting force is generated.

  • In recent years, ultrasonic has been widely applied in measurement and industrial fields and its application range has been expanded as a result of continuous research and development. Wire Bonding Machine, an instrument fabricating semi-conductor, makes use of ultrasonic bonding method. In order to improve the currently used wire bonding machine using ultrasonic energy, technical accumulation is needed steadily through development of exciting device of ultrasonic composed of piezoelectic vibrator and horn. This study investigates the design conditions affecting the dynamic characteristics through the theoretical and experimental analysis of piezoelectric vibrator and horn, The study conducts separately the system identification of piezoelectric vibrator in time domain and the modal analysis of horn in frequency domain. In theoretical model, the integrated modeling is conducted via a combination of dynamic identification of piezoelectric vibrator and theoretical analysis of horn. Hence comparison is made for theoretical and experimental results of the dynamic characteristics of the ultrasonic transducer composed of piezoelectric vibrator and horn. Form the results of this study we develop the design technique of ultrasonic transducer using dynamic characteristic analysis and propose the possibility of ultrasonic welding considering the optimal condition of the natural frequency and vibration mode of horn.

  • This paper proposes a technique for improving the conventional conical horn antenna for the X-band frequency using metamaterial on a wire medium structure. The main idea of this research is the application of the wire medium metamaterial to the conical horn's aperture for the enhancement of the horn's gain; this is done without changing the antenna's dimensions. The results show that the wire medium structure can increase the gain of a conventional conical horn antenna from approximately 17.7 dB to 20.9 dB (an increase of approximately 3.2 dB). A prototype antenna was fabricated, and its fundamental parameters including its reflection coefficient ($S_{11}$), radiation patterns, and directive gain were measured. The simulated and measured results were very good. The wire medium structure of the proposed antenna improved the radiation pattern, enhanced the directivity, increased the gain, and reduced the side lobe level using a simple integrated wire medium structure.

  • In this paper, a 0.6~6GHz quad-ridge horn antenna which can be used for the antenna measurement of 5.8GHz WiFi system from lowest frequency band of mobile LTE (Long Term Evolution) is designed and implemented. The quad-ridge horn antenna has quadruple ridges of exponential function, a back-short and a cavity. Based on this structure, we design the cavity size, ridge gap and feed gap to have broadband characteristics. For implementation, the plates material of aluminum and copper are used for the horn and four ridges, respectively. And the insulator supports are used to maintain the gap between ridges. By measurement, antenna has the gain of 6.2~13.35dBi with the return loss of less than -6dB (under VSWR 3 : 1) in the entire design band. The results of this study can be widely used to the antenna studies on the mobile communication including low frequency band of LTE, the EMI measurement and the standard calibration measurement.

  • Recently, development of a cryogenic fluids storage tank for storing or transporting liquid hydrogen is actively in progress. In cryogenic fluids storage tanks, hydrogen evaporates due to the extreme temperature difference inside and outside the tank. As the mass of the cryogenic fluids changes with continuous vaporization, the fluids level also changes. Therefore, there is need for a method of accurately measuring the level change in the storage tank. In the case of general cryogenic fluids, it is difficult to accurately measure the level because the dielectric constant is very low. As a method of measuring cryogenic fluids level with low dielectric constant, it can be used an Millimeter wave (MM wave) FMCW radar sensor. However, the signal sensitivity is very weak and the level accuracy is poor. In this paper, the signal sensitivity is improved by designing the horn lens antenna of the existing 80 GHz FMCW radar sensor. Horn lens antenna is fabricated by FDM/SLA type 3D printer according to horn and lens characteristics. The horn is used to increase the signal gain and the lens improves the signal straightness. This makes it possible to measure the level of cryogenic fluids with a low dielectric constant.

  • Emulsion polymerization of octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (OMCTS) was conducted under ultrasonic irradiation. Two sources of ultrasound with different intensities and frequencies of 20 KHz and 40 KHz were used for horn and bath type reactor, respectively. A combined process of horn and bath was also investigated. The effectiveness of the reaction systems was investigated by measuring conversion as well as intrinsic viscosity of the products. The influence of reaction temperature and sonication time on the progress of sonochemical polymerization was examined. It was found that conversion of greater than 80% and high viscosity were achieved within a few minutes of sonication in a horn type reactor, however, conversion and viscosity showed maximum values depending upon the sonication time. In a bath type reactor where a relatively weak intensity was maintained, longer duration time of more than one hour of sonication was required to reach a high level of conversion and viscosity. Compared with the horn type system, the conversion and viscosity in the bath type reactor were increased along with the sonication time. When the polymerization was carried out in a combined system of horn and bath, the evolution of conversion and molecular weight was quite different from the other cases. For the given geometry of reaction system, acoustic analysis using a commercial software was carried out and the results were correlated with experimental observation.

  • Background: Partial nerve injury to a peripheral nerve may induce the development of neuropathic pain which is characterized by symptoms such as spontaneous burning pain, allodynia and hyperalgesia. Though underlying mechanism has not fully understood, sensitization of dorsal horn neurons may contribute to generate such symptoms. Nitric oxide acts as an inter- and intracellular messenger in the nervous system and is produced from L-arginine by nitric oxide synthase (NOS). Evidence is accumulating which indicate that nitric oxide may mediate nociceptive information transmission. Recently, it has been reported that NOS inhibitor suppresses neuropathic pain behavior in an neuropathic pain animal model. This study was conducted to determine whether nitric oxide could be involved in the sensitization of dorsal horn neurons in neuropathic animal model. Methods: Neuropathic animal model was made by tightly ligating the left L5 and L6 spinal nerves and we examined the effects of iontophoretically applied NOS inhibitor (L-NAME) on the dorsal horn neuron's responses to mechanical stimuli within the receptive fields. Results: In normal animals, NOS inhibitor (L-NAME) specifically suppressed the responses to the noxious mechanical stimuli. In neuropathic animals, the dorsal horn neuron's responses to mechanical stimuli were enhanced and NOS inhibitor suppressed the dorsal horn neuron's enhanced responses to non-noxious stimuli as well as those to noxious ones. Conclusions: These results suggest that nitric oxide may mediate nociceptive transmission in normal animal and also mediate sensitization of dorsal horn neurons in neuropathic pain state.

  • In this paper, the theoretical research and simulation using the Finite Element Method (FEM) to design and form a micro-pattern for an ultrasonic horn is described. The present method is based on an initial design estimate obtained by FEM analysis. The natural and resonant frequencies required for the ultrasonic tool horn used for forming the fine pattern were predicted by finite element analysis. FEM analysis using ANSYS S/W was used to predict the resonant frequency for the optimum technical design of the ultrasonic horn vibration mode shape. When electrical power is supplied to the ultrasonic transducer, it is converted into mechanical movement energy, leading to vibration. The RFID TAG becomes the pattern formed on the insulating sheet by using the longitudinal vibration energy of the ultrasonic tool horn. The FEM analysis result is then incorporated into the optimal design and manufacturing of the ultrasonic tool horn.
