  • The condensation heat transfer coefficients of R-22 and R-410A in a small diameter tube were investigated. The main components of the refrigerant loop consist of a receiver, a variable-speed pump, a mass flowmeter, an evaporator (preheater), and a condenser (test section). The test section consists of smooth, horizontal copper tube of 3.38 mm outer diameter and 1.77 mm inner diameter. The refrigerant mass fluxes varied from 450 to $1050\;kg/(m^2s)$ and the average inlet and outlet qualities were 0.05 and 0.95. The main results were summarized as follows : the condensation heat transfer coefficient also increases with increasing mass flux and quality. The condensation heat transfer coefficient of R-410A was slightly higher than that of R-22. Most of correlations proposed in the large diameter tube showed significant deviations with experimental data except for the ranges of low quality and low mass flux.

  • The objective of this study is to provide the information on the techniques of manufacturing and experiment in small scale modeling of precast concrete(P.C.)large panel structures. The adopted scale was 1/5th 4types of experiments were performed : material tests for model concrete and model reinforcement, compressive test of horizontal joint, shear test of vertical joint and cyclic static test of 2-story subassemblage structure. Based on the experimental results, the following conclusions are drawn: (1)Model concrete may have in general larger compressive strength than expected. (2) Model reinforcement can show less ductility if the annealing processes were performed without using vaccuum tube. (3) Failure modes of horizontal and vertical joints were almost same for both prototype and model. But the strength of model appears to be higher than required by similitude law. (4)Hysteretic behavior of 1/5 scale subassemblage model can be made quite similar to prototype's if the ductility of model reinforcement and compressive strength of model concrete could be representative of those of prototype.

  • Horizontal two-phase flow pressure drop within rectangular channels with small gap heights have been examined experimentally. The gap heights range from 0.4mm to 4mm corresponding to aspect ratios(the channel height divided by the width) from 0.02 to 0.2. Water and air were used as the test fluids with the superficial velocity ranges being 0.03-2.39m/s and 0.05-18.7m/s, respectively. The experimental results In rectangular channels were compared with the Lockhart-Martinelli correlation, which are widely used for conventional round tube. The Lockhart-Martinelli correlation turned out to be Inappropriate to represent the present experimental data. In this respect, considering the aspect ratio and gap-height effects, an empirical correlation on two-phase flow pressure drop was proposed. The proposed correlation successfully covers the bubbly, plug, slug and annular flow regimes.

  • Condensing heat transfer coefficients of R-22 and R-134a were measured in smooth, horizontal copper tubes with inner diameters of 1.77mm, 3.36mm, and 5.35mm, respectively. The experiments were conducted in the closed loop, which was driven by a magnetic gear pump. Data are presented for the following range of variables : mass velocity from 200 to 500kg/$m^2$.s and quality from 0 to 1.0. The heat transfer coefficients in the small diameter tubes (ID < 7mm) were observed to be strongly affected by various diameters and the heat transfer characteristics in the small diameter tubes differed from those in the large diameter tubes. Heat transfer coefficients in the small diameter tubes are higher than those in the large diameter tubes at the same experimental condition. It was found that some well-known previous correlations(Shahs correlation and Cavallini-Zecchins correlation) were not suitable for small diameter tubes.

  • Flow condensation heat transfer coefficients (HTCs) of R22, R410, Propane (R290) were measured inside a horizontal 9 hole aluminum multi-channel flat tube. The main test section in the refrigerant loop was made of a 0.53m long multi-channel flat tube of hydraulic diameter of 1.4 mm. Refrigerant was cooled by passing cold water through an annulus surrounding the test section. Data were obtained in qualities of $0.1\~0.9$ at mass flux of $200\~400kg/m^2s$ and heat flux of $7.3\~7.7kW/m^2$ at the saturation temperature of $40^{\circ}C$. All popular heat transfer correlations in single-phase subcooled liquid flow and flow condensation originally developed for large single tubes predicted the present data of the multi channel flat tube within $25\%$ deviation when effective heat transfer area was used in determining experimental data. This suggests that there is little change in flow characteristics and patterns when the tube diameter is reduced down to 1.4 mm diameter range. Hence, a modified correlation based on the present data was proposed which could be applied to small diameter tubes with effective heat transfer area. The correlation showed a mean deviation of less than $20\%$ for all data.

  • Displacement is an important element for evaluating the stability and failure mechanism of hydraulic structures. Digital image correlation (DIC) is a useful technique to measure a three-dimensional displacement field using two cameras without any contact with test material. The objective of this study is to evaluate the behavior of stacked geotextile tubes using the DIC technique. Geotextile tubes are stacked to build a small-scale temporary dam model to exclude water from a specific area. The horizontal and vertical displacements of four stacked geotextile tubes are monitored using a dual camera system according to the upstream water level. The geotextile tubes are prepared with two different fill materials. For each dam model, the interface layers between upper and lower geotextile tubes are either unreinforced or reinforced with a cementitious binder. The displacement of stacked geotextile tubes is measured to analyze the behavior of geotextile tubes. Experimental results show that as upstream water level increases, horizontal and vertical displacements at each layer of geotextile tubes initially increase with water level, and then remain almost constant until the subsequent water level. The displacement of stacked geotextile tubes depends on the type of fill material and interfacial reinforcement with a cementitious binder. Thus, the proposed DIC technique can be effectively used to evaluate the behavior of a hydraulic structure, which consists of geotextile tubes.

  • PCV(Positive Crankcase Ventilation) system is designed to remove blowby gas. In this system, a PCV valve is attached in a manifold suction tube to control the flow rate of blowby gas which generates various operating conditions of an automotive engine. As this valve plays a crucial role, the demand in its design is high owing to the small size and high velocity. For this reason, a numerical investigation was carried out to understand both the spool dynamic motion and internal fluid flow characteristics. As a result, the spool dynamic characteristics(i.e. displacement, velocity, acting force), increase in direct proportion to the magnitude of the pressure difference and indicate periodic oscillating motions. Moreover, the velocity at the orifice region decreases according to the increase in differential pressure due to energy loss caused by the sudden decrease of flow area at the orifice region and the increase of flow volume in front of the spool head. Finally, the mass flow rate at the outlet decreases with the increase of spool displacement.

  • Recently, micro fin tube is widely used to heat exchanger for high performance. And, as the alternative refrigerants for R-22, hydrocarbons such as R-290, R-600 and R-600a are very promising because of their low GWP and ODP. Thus, R-290 was used as working fluid in this study. Most design of heat exchanger had been based on heat transfer characteristics of pure refrigerant although refrigerant oil exists in the refrigeration cycles. So, the influence of oil on heat transfer characteristics have to be considered for investigating exact evaporation heat transfer characteristics. But, this is an unresolved problem of refrigeration heat transfer. Therefore the influence of the refrigeration oil to the evaporation heat transfer characteristics of R-290 were conducted in a horizontal micro tin tube. The mineral oil was used as refrigeration oil. The experimental apparatus consisted of a basic refrigeration cycle and a system for oil concentration measurement. Test conditions are as the follows; evaporation temperature $5^{\circ}C$, mass velocity 100 $kg/m^2s$, heat flux 10 $kW/m^2$, oil concentration 0, 1.3, 3.3, 5.7 wt.%, and quality $0.07{\sim}1.0$. When refrigeration oil was entered, oil foaming was observed at the low quality region. And, very small bubbles were observed as quality was increased. Pressure drop and heat transfer coefficient increased as the concentration of refrigeration oil increased to 5 wt.%.. The performance index of heat exchanger was the highest near 3.3 wt.%.

  • In this study, we evaluate the thermal-hydraulic performance and economics of Printed Circuit Heat Exchanger (PCHE) according to the channel types and associated shape variables for the design of recuperators with Sodium-cooled Fast Reactors (SFRs). To perform the evaluations with variables such as the Reynolds number, channel types, tube diameter, and shape variables, a code for the heat exchanger is developed and verified through a comparison with experimental results. Based on the code, the volume and pressure drop are calculated, and an economic assessment is conducted. The zigzag type, which has bending angle of 80° and a tube diameter of 1.9 mm, is the most economical channel type in a SFR using CO2 as the working fluid. For a SFR using N2, we recommend the airfoil type with vertical and horizontal numbers of 1.6 and 1.1, respectively. The airfoil type is superior when the mass flow rate is large because the operating cost changes significantly. When the mass flow rate is small, volume is a more important design parameter, therefore, the zigzag type is suitable. In addition, we conduct a sensitivity analysis based on the production cost of the PCHE to identify changes in optimal channel types.
