Falling film heat transfer analyses with aqueous lithium bromide solution were performed to investigate the transfer characteristics of the copper tubes. Finned (knurled) tube and a smooth tube were selected as test specimens. Averaged generation fluxes of water and the heat flux were obtained. As the film flow rate of the solution increased, the generation fluxes of water decreased for both tubes due to the fact that the heat transfer resistance increased with the film thickness. The effect of the enlarged surface area at the knurled tube was supposed to be dominant at a small flow rate. The generation fluxes of water increased with the increasing degree of tube wall superheat. Nucleate boiling is supposed to occur at a wall superheat of 20K for a smooth tube, and at 10K for a knurled tube. The increased performance of the knurled tube was supposed to mainly come from the effect of the increased heating surface area.

Large diameter tubes have been used until comparatively lately. However, small diameter tubes are largely used because of their high efficiency in heat transfer and low cost, recently. This study focuses on the experimental research of the heat transfer coefficients during evaporation process of R-22 and R-134a in small diameter tubes. The evaporation heat transfer coefficients were measured in smooth horizontal copper tubes with ID 1.77, 3.36 and 5.35 mm. The evaporation heat transfer coefficients in the small diameter tubes (ID <7 mm) were observed to be strongly affected by the size of tube diameters and to differ from those of general predictions in the large diameter tubes. The heat transfer coefficients of ID 1.77 mm copper tube were higher by 20 and 30 % than those of ID 3.36 mm, ID 5.35 mm copper tubes respectively. Also, it was found that it was very difficult to apply some well-known previous predictions (Shah's, Jung's. Kandlikar's and Oh-Katsuda's correlation) to small diameter tubes. Based on the data, the new correlation is proposed to predict the evaporation heat transfer coefficients of R-22 and R-134a in small diameter tubes.
Heat pumps are used for air-conditioning systems in commercial buildings, schools, and factories because of low operating and maintenance costs. These systems use the earth as a heat source in heating mode and a heat sink in cooling mode. Ground heat exchangers are classified by a horizontal type and vertical type according to the installation method. A horizontal type means that a heat exchanger is laid in the trench bored in 1.2 to 1.8 m depth. And a vertical type is usually constructed by placing small diameter high density polyethylene tube in a vertical borehole. Vertical tube sizes range from 20 to 40 mm nominal diameter. Borehole depth range between 100 and 200 m depending on local drilling conditions and available equipment. In this study, to evaluate the performance of single u-tube with bentonite grouting, single u-tube with broken stone grouting and double n-tube bentonite grouting of vertical ground heat exchangers, test sections are buried on the earth and experimental apparatus is installed. Therefore the heat transfer performance and pressure loss of these are estimated.

Single-phase heat transfer coefficients and pressure drops of R-718 were measured in smooth, horizontal copper tubes with inner diameters of 3.36 ㎜, 5.35 ㎜. 6.54 ㎜ and 8.12 ㎜, respectively. The experiments were conducted in the closed loop, which was driven by a magnetic gear pump. Data are presented for the following range of variables : Reynolds from 1000 to 20000. Single-phase heat transfer coefficients increased by 10∼30 % as the inner diameter of tube was reduced and it was found that a well-known previous correlation, Gnielinski's correlation was not suitable for the small diameter tubes. But the pressure drop in the small diameter tubes have been shown slightly deviations with Blauius' correlation. Based on an analogy between heat and mass transfer. the new heat transfer correlation is proposed to predict the experimental data successfully.

The heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of R718 flowing in smooth horizontal copper tubes with inner diameter of 3.36 mm, 5.35 mm, 6.54 mm and 8.12 mm were investigated. The test section is a counterflow heat exchanger with refrigerant flowing in the inner tube and water flowing in the annulus. Experiments were peformed for the flowing range of variables : Reynolds number (1000 to 20000), mass flow rate of brine (450 kg/h) and refrigerant temperature (5$0^{\circ}C$). The main results were summarized as follows : (1) The heat transfer coefficient of 3.36 mm ID was about 10% to 30% higher than that of 5.35 mm, 6.54 mm and 8.12 mm ID, and the heat transfer coefficients for small diameter. tubes are about 20% to 27% higher than these predicted by Gnielinski. The new correlation is proposed to predict the experimental data. (2) As a result of comparison with correlation prosed by Blasius. the deviation of the experimental data slightly increased as the tube diameter decreased. (3) The ratio of heat transfer to friction factor (j/f) correlated by all experimental data increased as the tube diameter decreased.

The present paper dealt with an experimental study of condensation heat transfer coefficients with refrigerant R-22, R-407C and R-410A, and was focused on pressure gradient and heat transfer coefficient in horizontal tube-in-tube heat exchangers using inner diameter of 4 mm, 3 mm and 2 mm in a 16.91 mm tube and length of 3,000 mm. Experiments were performed at inlet saturation temperature of 35 to $45^{\circ}C$ and mass flux ranges from 200 to $600 kg/m^2s$. The pressure gradient with inner tube diameter of 4.0 mm is higher 2.5 times than that of 8.0 mm. In tube-in-tube HEX, the pressure gradient of R-410A were lower than those of R-22 and R-407C. The condensation heat transfer coefficients increased with mass flux increase, but they decreased with saturation temperature increased. Condensation heat transfer coefficients of R-410A were a little higher than those of R-22 and R-407C. The condensation heat transfer coefficients of tube-in-tube HEX were about 40% higher than those of double tube HEX.

Falling film heat transfer analyses with aqueous lithium bromide solution were peformed to investigate the transfer characteristics of the copper tubes. Finned(knurled) tube and a smooth tube were selected as test specimens. Averaged generation fluxes of water and the heat transfer performances(heat flux, heat transfer coefficient) were obtained. The results of this work were compared with the data reported previously. As the film flow rate of the solution increased, the generation fluxes of water decreased for both tubes. The reason is estimated by the fact that the heat transfer resistance with the film thickness increased as the film flow rate increased. The effect of the enlarged surface area at the knurled tube was supposed to be dominant at a small flow rate. The generation fluxes of water increased with the increasing degree of tube wall superheat. Nucleate boiling is supposed to occur at a wall superheat of 20 K for a smooth tube, and at 10 K for a knurled tube. The heat transfer performance of the falling film was superior to pool boiling at a low wall superheat below 10 K for both tubes tested. The knurled tube geometry showed good performance than the smooth tube, and the increased performance was mainly came from the effect of the increased heating surface area.

The evaporation heat transfer and pressure drop of $CO_2$ in a small diameter tube was investigated experimentally. The experiments were conducted without oil in a closed refrigerant loop which was driven by a magnetic gear pump. The main components of the refrigerant loop are a receiver, a variable-speed pump, a mass flow meter, a pre-heater and evaporator(test section). The test section was made of a horizontal stainless steel tube with the inner diameter of 4.57 mm, and length of 4 m. The experiments were conducted at mass flux of 200 to 700 $kg/m^2s$, saturation temperature of $0^{\circ}C$ to $20^{\circ}C$, and heat flux of 10 to 20 $kW/m^2$ . The test results showed the evaporation heat transfer of $CO_2$ has great effect on more nucleate boiling than convective boiling. The evaporation heat transfer coefficients of $CO_2$ are highly dependent on the vapor quality, heat flux and saturation temperature. The evaporation pressure drop of C02 are highly dependent on the mass flux. In comparison with test results and existing correlations, correlations failed to predict the evaporation heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop of $CO_2$, therefore, it is necessary to develop reliable and accurate predictions determining the evaporation heat transfer coefficient and friction pressure drop of $CO_2$ in a horizontal tube.

An experimental study was carried out to make clear heat transfer characteristics in flow boiling of binary mixtures of refrigerants R134a and R123 in a uniformly heated horizontal tube. Experiments were run at a pressure of 0.6 MPa both for pure fluids and mixtures in the ranges of heat flux $10{\sim}50{kW/m}^2$, vapor quality 0~100% and mass flux 150-600 $kg/m^2s$. Heat transfer coefficients of mixtures were reduced compared to the interpolated values between pure fluids both in the low quality region where the nucleate boiling is dominant and in the high quality region where the convective evaporation is dominant. Total pressure drop during two-phase flow boiling in a horizontal tube consists of the sum of two components, that is, the frictional pressure drop and pressure drop due to acceleration. The frictional pressure drop is the most difficult component to predict, and makes the most important contribution to the total pressure drop. On the other hand, the acceleration pressure drop resulting from the variation of the momentum flux caused by phase change is generally small as compared to the frictional pressure drop. There is no significant difference in measured pressure drop between mixtures and pure fluids. The correlation of Martinelli and Nelson predicted most of the present data both for pure and mixed refrigerants within 30%.

The condensation pressure drop for pure refrigerants R-22, R-134a, and a binary refrigerant mixture R-410A flowing in a small diameter tube was investigated. The test section is a counterflow heat exchanger with refrigerant flowing in the inner tube and coolant flowing in the annulus. The test section consists of 1220 [mm] length with horizontal copper tube of 3.38 [mm] outer diameter and 1.77 [mm] inner diameter. The refrigerant mass fluxes ranged from 450 to 1050 [kg/(㎡$.$s)] and the average inlet and outlet qualities were 0.05 and 0.95, respectively. The main experimental results were summarized as follows : In the case of single-phase flow, the pressure drop of R-134a is much higher than that of R-22 and R-410A for the same Reynolds number. The friction factors for small diameter tubes are higher than those predicted by Blasius equation. In the case of two-phase flow, the pressure drop increases with increasing mass flux and decreasing quality. The pressure drop of R-134a is much higher than that of R-22 and R-410A for the same mass flux. Most of correlations proposed in the large diameter tube showed enormous deviations with experimental data. However, the correlation predicted by Honda et al showed relatively good agreement with experimental data for R-134.
