  • As current manufacturing processes require high spindle speed and precise machining, increasing accuracy by reducing volumetric errors of the machine itself, particularly thermal errors, is very important. Thermal errors can be estimated by many empirical models, for example, an FEM model, a neural network model, a linear regression model, an engineering judgment model, etc. This paper discusses to make a modeling of thermal errors efficiently through backward elimination and fuzzy logic strategy. The model of a thermal error using fuzzy logic strategy overcomes limitation of accuracy in the linear regression model or the engineering judgment model. It shows that the fuzzy model has more better performance than linear regression model, though it has less number of thermal variables than the other. The fuzzy model does not need to have complex procedure such like multi-regression and to know the characteristics of the plant, and the parameters of the model can be mathematically calculated. Also, the fuzzy model can be applied to any machine, but it delivers greater accuracy and robustness.

  • This paper presents the thermal characteristics analysis of a high-speed HMC(horizontal machining center) with spindle speed of 30,000rpm and fried rate of 40m/min. The spindle speed is achieved by introducing angular contact ball bearings, oil-jet lubrication method, oil jacket cooling method, and so on. The spindle system is a motor-separated type composed of the main spindle and sub-spindle which are mechanically connected by the flexible coupling. The spindles are supported by two front and rear bearings, and the built-in motor is located between the front to and rear bearings of the sub-spindle. The thermal analysis model of HMC is constructed by the finite element method, and the thermal characteristics in the design stage are estimated based on temperature distribution and heat flow under the various testing conditions related to spindle speed and feed rate.

  • MascMC system is one of the MMC system module which performs measuring and checking of machined workpieces on the machine tools. Accuracy of the MascMC was compensated for developing a reliable measuring system by measurement error calibration. Reference gauges, ring gauges, block gauges, squares, spheres and cylindrical squares, were used for error identification and compensation. .+-. 10 .mu. m accuracy with 95% confidence interval was confirmed on the vertical and the horizontal machining center through the large number of experiments.

  • The objective of this study is to estimate and to compensate far the volumetric error of a workpiece influenced by the geometric error of a machine tool. In this paper, the volumetric error is defined and the error synthesis model is presented. Then, the volumetric error of workpiece is calculated and compared through the simulation, and a new tool-path is generated to compensate for the error in the post-processor of CAM system using the error synthesis model. By this method, the error is compensated without modification or replacement of a machine tool being in use.

  • This paper presents an indirect method for on-line measuring the cutting forces in contour NC milling processes by using the current signals of the servo drive motors. A Kaluman filler is used for estimating each of the load torques to the x, y-axis servo motors of a horizontal machining center. Then, the load torque induced by the friction force in the guidewayis estimated and subtracted from the total extermal torque, thus resulting in the load torque induced by the cutting force. A series of experimental works on the circular interpolated contour milling process shows good agrement between the cutting forces measured by the dynamometer and those estimated by the method presented in the paper.

  • If the on-line cutting conditions (e.g. speed, feedrate, radial and axal depth of cuts) can be identified in an end milling process, much information about cutting forces will be estimated from the cutting force model. Therefore, those estimated conditions can be applied to monitoring and control areas. In this paper, a real-time estimation algorithm for radial and axial depth of cuts is studied in end milling using the averaging cutting forces per tooth. The analytical estimation models of depth of cuts are derived from the geometric cutting force model. The validity of the estimation models is verified on a horizontal machining center through the experiments in various cutting conditions.

  • In this paper a CAD-based optimal design system is introduced and applied to optimal design of machine tool structures. The system is designed to reduce manual interfacing effort. All the design activities such as selecting design variables, making FE meshes and FE analysis are integrated on a parametric CAD program. A user can easily select design variables by clicking a CAD model. To enhance the robustness and versatility, this system uses the finite difference method for the design sensitivity analysis. By taking a practical example of the design of the column of a horizontal machining center, it is shown that the software system is efficiently usable in industry establishing the goal of minimizing user intervention between various analysis and optimization activities.
