  • Horizontal cooperation is seen as an effective way to raise a competitive advantage in logistics and transportation. However, there are many logistics enterprises still operating individually instead of cooperating. This research aims to investigate the factors influencing the decision of horizontal cooperation by surveying a large sample of Vietnamese logistics companies. This study employs 161 logistics companies to examine correlations between potential factors and horizontal collaboration. The structural equation model (SEM) was used to test the conceptual model and the relationships among variables. The findings revealed that information sharing was the most important predictor of 161 supply chain providers' horizontal collaboration decisions, which resulted in increased profitability or service quality. Besides, trust in partners was found to be positively related to the degree of horizontal cooperation among logistics companies. Finally, the finding of this research is that reputation had a positive effect on the strategy of horizontal cooperation. Our findings suggest that SME managers should be concerened about their information sharing, their reputation as well as their trust in partners if they would be invited in cooperation with another firm to increase service quality, performance, and competitive advantage.

  • The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of factors hampering innovation on firm's R&D cooperation. We classify the obstacles to innovation into lack of money and information, and also distinguish between horizontal cooperation and vertical cooperation. We argue that different obstacles have a differential effect on the types of R&D cooperation. We examined the hypotheses using KIS (Korea Innovation Survey) data. The results show that deficiency of information is positively related to both vertical and horizontal cooperation, however, lack of money is not related to firm's R&D cooperation. Based on these findings from Korean manufacturing firms, the implications of the results and future research directions are discussed.

  • This study is to investigate the relationships between R&D collaboration and competitive advantage in Korean international venture firms from the perspective of resource-based theory, organizational learning and network theory. The R&D collaboration is divided into vertical cooperation within the value chain and horizontal cooperation beyond value chain. The first key finding from empirical analysis is that both vertical and horizontal R&D collaborations have significantly positive impacts on technology based competitive advantages. The vertical R&D collaboration has more impacts on competitive advantages than horizontal R&D collaboration. This suggests that R&D collaboration with purchasers and suppliers plays a greater role for venture organizations' competitiveness. Second, the potential knowledge based absorption capacity and mutual goodwill trust also work significantly to reinforce the positive influences of R&D collaboration to the competitive advantage. This implies that mutual trust between partners participating in collaboration and absorption capacity within venture organizations would strengthen the effectiveness of R&D cooperation. This study provides the practical implications that the performance and effectiveness of R&D collaboration may rely on the nature of cooperation partners and internal organization capability.

  • This paper presents a precision method to calculate the electric field density of mountain area using digital terrain elevation data(DTED). Generally we calculate the electric field density of a point adding a direct field density and horizontal reflection field density between two points. In this paper, we consider a vertical reflection field density from vertical surface near the wave propagation line between transmitter and receiver. The vertical reflection electric field have different propagation path and polarization from a horizontal reflection field. And the total electric field density adding horizontal field density and vertical reflection value is more accurate than a direct path electrical field density or direct field density adding a horizontal reflection field density.

  • Recently, the safety of the coal-mining tunnels has been improved greatly, but accidents occur continually. Most tunnel support failures occur because the fish plate part that connects the I-beams is unable to withstand ground pressure. In the case of XX coal mine, the arch part of tunnel support bends to the upper direction. In such a case, excessive horizontal load as well as vertical load acts on the tunnel support. Horizontal load is caused by the sudden loosing of underground rock mass or the leakage of underground water, so it is fairly complex to predict horizontal loading on a tunnel support. To predict the horizontal load on this component is defined as the problem that determines the horizontal load conditions in wedges of tunnel support. This is an optimization problem in which maximum bending stress and horizontal load are considered by an objective function and design variables, respectively. Therefore, in this study, design of experiments and optimization algorithm were applied to identify the horizontal load in tunnel support.

  • This paper proposes a new method that detects the intersection points of handwritten Hangul strokes using run-length. The method firstly finds the strokes' width of handwritten Hangul characters using both horizontal and vertical run-lengths, secondly extracts horizontal and vertical strokes of a character utilizing the strokes' width, and finally detects the intersection points of the strokes exploiting horizontal and vertical strokes. The analysis of both the horizontal and the vertical strokes doesn't use the strokes' angles but both the strokes' width and the changes of the run-lengths. The intersection points of the strokes become the candidated parts for phoneme segmentation, which is one of main techniques for off-line handwritten Hangul recognition. The segmented strokes represent the feature for handwritten Hangul recognition.

  • A horizontal dust collector is used in a large wind-volume grain dryer. In this study, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) was used to analyze the flow characteristics inside the dust collector, including the effects of wear on the conical hub on the dust collection performance. Recently, a horizontal cyclone dust collector was developed with a conical hub and fixed vanes at the inlet of the dust collector to generate swirl flow to separate foreign matter from the air. The dust collector is relatively small in size and easy to install, and it has a relatively low back pressure, which does not require any additional power. However, there are problems with a back pressure problem and dust deposition that are caused by the shape of the horizontal dust collector. To solve these problems, the flow characteristics were studied with internal shapes of the dust collector using three-dimensional flow analysis.

  • The RAR (Reinforced Abutment for Railways) is an economical abutment to reduce the settlement of a transitional zone and horizontal displacement of an abutment by constructing backfill before the abutment. In this paper, the performance of the RAR depending on the pile installation was evaluated using 2D (Dimensional) finite element analysis and compared with the existing abutment (with 5 rows pile). Numerical analysis showed that increasing pile installation is more effective in reducing horizontal displacement and earth pressure than settlement of the transitional zone. The horizontal displacement and earth pressure of the RAR was approximately 26~37% and 59~83% compared to the existing abutment by changing the pile installation. More pile installation led to a greater reduction of the horizontal displacement and earth pressure of the RAR. In addition, the horizontal earth pressure of RAR is influenced considerably by the reinforcement, pile, foundation, and stiffness of the ground.

  • The horizontal shear capacity when the flange of a steel girder is replaced with 80 MPa concrete is important for its structural safety. In this study, 6 specimens with different interface conditions were designed and fabricated based on the Limit State Design Code on Korean Highway Bridges and static tests were performed to measure the horizontal shear capacity. Not only the resistance factors of the stud shear connector, concrete and reinforcement, but also the surface conditions of the casing concrete and spacing of the horizontal shear reinforcements were used as the experimental variables. The experiments showed that the interfaces between the steel girder and the concrete flange have stronger joint performance than those between the concrete flange and deck slab. To ensure the composite action in the plastic zone, the conservative horizontal shear reinforcement is more important than the roughness in the concrete face.

  • This paper proposes a new stroke extraction algorithm for phoneme segmentation, which is one of main techniques for off-line handwritten Hangul recognition. The proposed algorithm extracts vertical, slant, and horizontal strokes from phonemes using run-length. The run-length of vertical or slant strokes becomes the width, and also the number of horizontal run-lengths the width. After extracting horizontal strokes from phonemes, the algorithm links two continuous vertical or slant stokes with run-lengths of the strokes' width to represent the features of a character. The extracted strokes can be utilized to recognize a character, using template matching of strokes, which is being adopted in on-line handwritten Hangul recognition.
