  • The anti-coagulant activity of ilexoside D isolated from the roots of ilex pubescens Hook. et Am. was investigated in in vivo models of blood coagulation in rats. On oral administration, ilexoside D prolonged the bleeding time and the whole blood recalcified clotting time, but not the plasma recalcified clotting time. In vitor, ilexoside D did not affect the recalciffed clotting times of whole blood, platelet-rich plasma(PRP), and platelet-poor plasma(PPP), while in the presence of tissue factor the compound prologed the reduced proth-rombin times of whole blood, PRP and PPP in the dose-dependent manner. These results indicate that ilexoside D has the anit-tissue factor activity as well as the antithromobotic activity.

  • Background: A chest computed-tomography has become more prevalent so that it is more common to detect small sized pulmonary nodules that have not been found in previous simple chest x-ray. If those detected nodules are undersized or located in pulmonary parenchyma, it is difficult to accomplish a biopsy since it is vulnerable to explore them either grossly or digitally. Thus, in our hospital, a thoracoscopic pulmonary wedge resection was performed after locating a lesion by means of hook wire with CT-guided. Material and Method: 31 patients (17 males and 14 female patients) from December in 2006 to June in 2010 became our subjects; their 34 pulmonary nodules were subjected to the thoracoscopic pulmonary wedge resection after locating a lesion by means of hook wire with CT-guided. Also we analyzed a possibility of hook wire dislocation, a frequency of conversion to open thoracotomy, time consumed to operation after location of a lesion, operation time, post operation complication, and histological diagnosis of the lesion. Result: 12 of 34 cases were ground glass lesion, whereas 22 cases of them were solitary pulmonary lesion. The median value of the lesion was 8mm in size (range: 3 to 23 mm), while the median value was 12.5 mm in depth (range: 1 to 34 mm). The median value of time consumed from location of the lesion to anesthetic induction was 86.5 minutes (41~473 minutes); furthermore the mean value of operation time was 103 minutes (25~345 minutes). Intrathoracic wire dislocation was found in one case, but a target lesion was successfully excised. Open thoracotomy was performed in four cases due to pleural adhesion. However, there was no case of conversion to open thoracotomy due to failure to detect a target lesion. In histological diagnosis, metastatic cancer were found in 15 cases, which were the most common, primary lung cancer were in 9 cases, non-specific inflammation were in 3 cases, tuberculosis inflammation were in 2 cases, lymph nodes were in 2 cases, active tuberculosis were in 1 case, atypical adenomatous hyperplasia was in 1 case and normal lung parenchymal finding was in 1 case, respectively. Conclusion: In our hospital, in order to accomplish a precise histological diagnosis of ground-glass lesion and pulmonary nodules in lung parenchyma, location of pulmonary nodules were exactly located with hook wire under chest computed-tomography, which was followed by lung biopsy. We concluded that this was an accurate, minimally invasive and valuable method to minimize the complications and increase of cost of medical service provided.

  • One specimen of Epinephelus areolatus, belonging to the subfamily Epinephelinae of the family Serranidae, was collected by a hook from commercial longline fisheries in the coastal waters of Jeju Island, Korea. This species is mostly similar to E. chlorostigma, but the former is distinguished from the latter by having larger brown spots and a white posterior margin on the caudal fin. We propose a new Korean name "Dae-moon-ba-ri" for E. areolatus.

  • To develop the efficient numerical optimization method for the design of an airfoil, an evaluation of various methods coupled with two-dimensional Naviev-Stokes analysis is presented. Simplex method and Hook-Jeeves method we used as direct search methods, and steepest descent method, conjugate gradient method and DFP method are used as indirect search methods and are tested to determine the search direction. To determine the moving distance, the golden section method and cubic interpolation method are tested. The finite volume method is used to discretize two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations, and SIMPLEC algorithm is used for a velocity-pressure correction method. For the optimal design of two-dimensional airfoil, maximum thickness, maximum ordinate of camber line and chordwise position of maximum ordinate are chosen as design variables, and the ratio of drag coefficient to lift coefficient is selected as an objective function. From the results, it is found that conjugate gradient method and cubic interpolation method are the most efficient for the determination of search direction and the moving distance, respectively.

  • Recently K-Pop gained worldwide sensational popularity, no longer limited to the domestic pop music scene. One of the main causes can be that K-Pop mostly are "Hook Song" which has the "hook effect": a certain melody or/and rhythm is repeated up to 70 times in one song so that it hooks the ear of the listener. Also, visual effects by K-Pop dance group are supposed to contribute to gaining the popularity. In this paper, we propose a method which traces the changes of preference for Korean pop music according to the passing of time and investigates the causes using acoustic signal analysis. For this, experiments in acoustic signal analysis are performed on Korean pop music of from popular female singers in 1960s to those as of this date. Experimental results by applying acoustic signal processing techniques show that the periods discrimination is possible based on scientific evidences. Also, quantitative, objective and numerical data based on acoustic signal processing techniques are extracted compared with the pre-existing methods such as subjective and statistical data.

  • The National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDI) conducted a circle hook experiment to compare the catch rates of target and bycatch species between J hook and circle hooks in the tuna longline fishery of the Eastern Pacific Ocean, which is located between $9^{\circ}13'S-1^{\circ}36'N$ and $126^{\circ}00'-138^{\circ}21'W$. Sampling was conducted from September 20 to October 23, in 2006. In this survey, we collected shark data to obtain the ratio of fin weight to body weight of sharks. Overall, 413 sharks belonging to 9 species were caught on 62,464 hooks. The total weight of the sharks caught was 11,093 kg. The ratio of wet fin weight to body round weight of sharks by species ranged from 3.7% to 7.7%, while the mean was 5.4%. The total ratio of wet fin weight to the dry fin weight of sharks ranged 0.38 to 0.70 and the mean value was 0.53. The ratio of dry fin weight to the body round weight of the sharks was estimated to be 2.86%.
