  • A numerical formulation is developed to solve the linear three-dimensional hydrodynamic equations which describes wind induced flows in a homogeneous shelf sea. The hydmdynamic equations are at the outset separated into two systems. namely, an equation containing the gradient of sea surface elevation and the mean flow (external mode) and an equation describing the deviation from the mean flow (internal mode). The Galerkin method is then applied to the internal mode equation. The eigenvalues are determined from the eigenvalue problem involving the vertical eddy viscosity subject to a homogeneous boundary condition at the surface and a sheared boundary condition at the sea bed. The model is tested in a one-dimensional channel with uniform depth under a steady, uniform wind. The analytical velocity profile by Cooper and Pearce (1977) using a constant vertical eddy viscosity in channels of infinite and finite length is chosen as a benchmark solution. The model is also tested in a homogeneous, rectangular basin with constant depth under a steady, uniform wind field (the Heaps' Basin of the North Sea scale).

  • A preconditioned numerical method for gas-liquid to-phase flow is applied to solve cavitating flow. The present method employs a density based finite-difference method of dual time-stepping integration procedure and Roe's flux difference splitting approximation with MUSCL-TVD scheme. A homogeneous equilibrium cavitation model is used. The method permits simple treatment of the whole gas-liquid two-phase flow field including wave propagation, large density changes and incompressible flow characteristics at low Mach number. By this method, two-dimensional internal flows through a venturi tuve and decelerating cascades are computed and discussed.

  • A numerical model of refrigerant flow through a capillary tube is developed, which considers the effects of underpressure for vaporization, kinetic energy, and roughness of capillary tube. The numerical model is based on homogeneous flow assumptions for the two-phase flow region. A characteristic chart of HFC refrigerants flow through capillary tubes and correction factor chart of geometry and relative roughness of capillary tube to select a proper capillary for refrigerating machines using alternative refrigerants is presented by this numerical model.

  • An experimental study was carried out to measure frictional pressure drop in flow boiling to deionized water in a microchannel having a hydraulic diameter of $500{\mu}m$. Tests were performed in the ranges of heat fluxes from 100 to $400kW/m^2$, vapor qualities from 0 to 0.2 and mass fluxes of 200, 400 and $600kg/m^2s$. The frictional pressure drop during flow boiling is predicted by using two models; the homogeneous model that assumes equal phase velocity and the separate flow model that allows a slip velocity between two phases. From the experimental results, it is found that the two phase multiplier decreases with an increase in mass flux. Measured data of pressure drop are compared to a few available correlations proposed for macroscale and mini/microscale. The homogeneous model well predicted frictional pressure drop within MAE of 29.4 % for the test conditions considered in this work.

  • Homogeneous and isotropic turbulence (HIT) with no mean flow is a very useful type of flow for basic turbulence research. However, it is difficult to generate HIT in the lab. In this study, we implemented HIT in a confined box through synthetic jet actuators using sub-woofer speakers. Characteristics of HIT are varied depending on the strength of the jets. We used 2D PIV to measure the velocity field. Turbulence statistics such as homogeneity, isotropy ratio, turbulence kinetic energy, dissipation rate, Taylor microscale, Kolmogorov scale, and velocity correlation coefficient were calculated. Most of the turbulence statistics increased exponentially according to the strength of the jets, and the Taylor Reynolds number reached up to 185.

  • A process of 3-D particle image velocimetry, called here, as '3-D stereo PIV' was developed for the measurement of a section field of 3-D complex flows. The present method includes modeling of camera by a calibrator based on the homogeneous coordinate system, transfromation of oblique-angled image to transformed image, identification of 2-D velocity vectors by 2-D cross-correlation equation, stereo matching of 2-D velocity vectors of two cameras, accurate calculation of 3-D velocity vectors by homogeneous coordinate system and finally 3-D animation as the post processing. In principle, as two frame images only are necessary for the single instantaneous analysis of a section field of 3-D flow, more effective vectors are obtainable contrary to the previous multi-frame vector algorithm. An experimental system was also used for the application of the proposed method. Three analog CCD cameras and an Argon-Ion Laser(300mW) for illumination were adopted to capture the wake flow behind a bluff obstacle.

  • In this paper, some numerical methods recently developed for gas-liquid two-phase flows are reviewed. And then, a preconditioning method to solve cavitating flow by the author is introduced. This method employs a finite-difference Runge-Kutta method combined with MUSCL TVD scheme, and a homogeneous equilibrium cavitation model. So that it permits to treat simply the whole gas-liquid two-phase flow field including wave propagation, large density changes and incompressible flow characteristic at low Mach number. Finally, numerical results such as detailed observations of the unsteady cavity flows, a sheet cavitation break-off phenomena and some data related to performance characteristics of hydrofoils are shown.

  • Cavitation causes a great deal of noise, damage to components, vibrations, and a loss of efficiency in devices, such as propellers, pump impellers, nozzles, injectors, torpedoes, etc., Thus, cavitating flow simulation is of practical importance for many engineering systems. In this study, a two-phase flow solver based on the homogeneous mixture model has been developed. The flow characteristics around an axisymmetric cylinder were calculated and then validated by comparing with the experimental results in the cavitation water tunnel at the Korea Ocean Research & Development Institute. The results show that this solver is highly suitable for simulating the cavitating flows. After the code validation, the cavity length with changes of water depth, angle of attack and velocity were obtained.. Cavitation inception was also calculated for various operational conditions.

  • The present work aims to report the consequences of Darcy-Forchheimer medium in flow of Cross fluid model toward a stretched surface. Flow in porous space is categorized by Darcy-Forchheimer medium. Further heat transfer characteristics are examined via thermal radiation and heat generation/absorption. Transformation procedure is used. The arising system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations is solved numerically by means of shooting method. The effects of different flow variables on velocity, temperature, concentration, skin friction, and heat transfer rate are discussed. The obtained outcomes show that velocity was enhanced with the increase in the Weissenberg number but decays with increase in the porosity parameter and Hartman number. Temperature field is boosted by thermal radiation and heat generation; however, it decays with the increase in the Prandtl number.

  • In this study, numerical analysis of solid-liquid two-phase flow was conducted as a preliminary step to analyze the flow characteristics of drilling fluid using the commercial CFD code, ANSYS CFX 14.5. The homogeneous model and separated flow model were used to simulate solid-liquid two-phase flow phenomena. In the separated flow model, Gidaspow's drag force model was applied with the kinetic theory model was applied for solid particles. The validity of the numerical model used in this study was verified based on the published experimental results. Numerical analysis was carried out for volume fractions of 0.1 to 0.5 and velocities of 1 to 5 m/s in a horizontal tube with a diameter of 54.9 mm and a length of 3 m. The Pressure drop and volume fraction distribution of solid particles were confirmed. The pressure drop was predicted using the homogeneous model and separated flow model within the MAE of 17.04 % and 8.98 %, respectively. A high volume fraction was observed in the lower part of the tube, and the volume fraction decreased toward the upper part. As velocity increased, variations in volume fraction distribution at varying heights were decreased, and the numerical results predicted these flow characteristics well.
