  • This paper deals with the static analysis of axially functionally graded rectangular plates. It is assumed that the flexural rigidity of the plate varies exponentially along one of the plate's in-plane dimensions. Both an analytical approach and a numerical method are utilized to solve the problem. The analytical solution is obtained by using the Green's function method. To employ this approach, the adjoint boundary value problem is established. Then, exact solutions for deflection of the plate for different boundary conditions are found. In another way, a finite element formulation for the problem is developed. In order to demonstrate the validity of the Authors' formulation, the results obtained via both mentioned schemes are compared with each other for functionally graded plates and with results of previously published works for homogeneous plates. The effect of plate parameters on the response of the plate is also investigated. To remind the research background, a brief review on the application of Green's function method in plates' analysis and functionally graded plates is also presented.

  • The present paper seeks to investigate propagation and reflection of waves at free surfaces of homogeneous, anisotropic and rotating micropolar fibre-reinforced medium with voids. It has been observed that, in particular when P-wave is incident on the free surface, there exist four coupled reflected plane waves traveling in the medium; quasi-longitudinal displacement (qLD) wave, quasi-transverse displacement (qTD) wave, quasi-transverse microrotational wave and a wave due to voids. Normal mode Analysis usually called harmonic solution method is adopted in concomitant with Snell's laws and appropriate boundary conditions in determination of solution to the micropolar fibre reinforced modelled problem. Amplitude ratios which correspond to reflected waves in vertical and horizontal components are presented analytically. Also, the Reflection Coefficients are presented using numerical simulated results in graphical form for a particular chosen material by the help of Mathematica software. We observed that the micropolar fibre-reinforced, voids and rotational parameters have various degrees of effects to the modulation, propagation and reflection of waves in the medium. The study would have impact to micropolar fibre-reinforecd rotational-acoustic machination fields and future works about behavior of seismic waves.

  • In this study, a two-dimensional thermoelastic problem under hyperbolic heat conduction theory with an internal heat source is considered. The general solution for the temperature field, stress components and displacement field are obtained using the reduced differential transform method. The stress and displacement components are obtained using the thermal stress function in the reduced differential transform domain. All the solutions are obtained in the form of power series. The special case with a time-dependent laser heat source has been considered. The problem is considered for homogeneous material with finite rectangular cross-section heated with a non-Gaussian temporal profile. The effect of the heat source on all the characteristics of a material is discussed numerically and graphically for magnesium material taking a pulse duration of 0.2 ps. This study provides a powerful tool for finding the solution to the thermoelastic problem with less computational work as compared to other methods. The result obtained in the study may be useful for the investigation of thermal characteristics in engineering and industrial applications.

  • In this article, the buckling and free vibration of multi-directional FGM sandwich plates are investigated. The material properties of FGM sandwich plates are assumed to be varying continuously in the in the longitudinal, transverse and thickness directions. The material properties are evaluated based on Voigt's micro-mechanical model considering power law distribution method with arbitrary power index. Equations of motion for the buckling and vibration analysis of multi-directional FGM sandwich plate are obtained based on refined shear deformation theory. Analytical solution for simply supported multidirectional FGM sandwich plate is carried out using Navier's solution technique. The FGM sandwich plate considered in this work has a homogeneous ceramic core and two functionally graded face sheets. Influence of volume fraction index in the longitudinal, transverse and thickness direction, layer thickness, and geometrical parameter over natural frequency and critical buckling load of multi-directional FGM sandwich plate is investigated. The finding shows a multi-directional functionally graded structures perform better compared to uni-directional gradation. Hence, critical grading parameters have been identified which will guide researchers in selecting fabrication routes for improving the performance of such structures.

  • The application of Green's function in calculation of flow characteristics around submerged and floating bodies due to a regular wave is presented. It is assumed that the fluid is homogeneous, inviscid and incompressible, the flow is irrotational and all body motions are small. Two methods based on the boundary integral equation method (BIEM) are applied to solve associated problems. The first is a low order panel method with triangular flat patches and uniform distribution of velocity potential on each panel. The second method is a high order panel method in which the kernels of the integral equations are modified to make it nonsingular and amenable to solution by the Gaussian quadrature formula. The calculations are performed on a submerged sphere and some floating spheroids of different aspect ratios. The excellent level of agreement with the analytical solutions shows that the second method is more accurate and reliable.

  • We have analyzed collected photoelectric light curves for light variations of SW Lac. The method of Fourier analysis was adopted to quantify the light variation from season to season. We found the linear relation between the Fourier coefficient, B1 and the magnitude difference between two maxima. The total light of the system has been decreased as much as 0m.04 during approxiamately 20 years time interval. Photoelectric parameters including spot parameters for all light curves were obtained by the method of the Wilson and Devinney differential correction in order to secure the variations of parameters from season to season. SW Lac, not like RS CVn type stars, required to adjust all parameters as well as spot parameters for a reasonable fit to the observations of each epoch. A surface temperature of cooler star is one of the most sensitive parameters to affect a shape of light curve of SW Lac. We conclude that the shape of light curve of SW Lac varies even during one season as well as season to season. The light curve is mainly caused by inhomogeneous surface temperature due to strong chromospheric activity of the system.

  • A numerical comparison or predictions by limit equilibrium analysis and 3n analysis is presented for slope/pile system. Special attention is given to the coupled analysis based on the explicit-finite-difference code, FLAC. To this end, an internal routine (FISH) was developed to calculate a factor of safety for a pile-reinforced slope according to shear strength reduction technique. The case of coupled analyses was performed for stabilizing piles in slope in which the pile response and slope stability are considered simultaneously and subsequently the factors of safety are compared to uncoupled analysis (limit equilibrium analysis) solution for a homogeneous slope. Based on a limited parametric study, it is shown that in the free-head condition the factor of safety in slope is more conservative for a coupled analysis than for an uncoupled analysis and a definitely larger value represents when piles are installed in the middle of the slopes and are restrained in the pile head.

  • We investigated a solution-driven Yttrium Tin Oxide (YSnO) film that was imprinted using a parallel nanostructure as a liquid crystal (LC) alignment layer. The imprinting process was conducted at the annealing temperature of 100℃. To evaluate the effect of this process, we conducted surface analyses including atomic force microscopy (AFM). During imprinting, the surface roughness was reduced, and anisotropic characteristics were observed. Planar LC alignment was observed at a pretilt angle of 0.22° on YSnO film. Surface anisotropy induced by imprinting method forces LC to align along the direction of the parallel nanostructure, which is an alternative to conventional polyimide treated using a rubbing process.

  • The present article is concerned about the study of disturbances in a homogeneous nonlocal magneto-thermoelastic medium under the combined effects of hall current, rotation and two temperatures. The model under assumption has been subjected to normal force. Laplace and Fourier transform have been used for finding the solution to the field equations. The analytical expressions for conductive temperature, stress components, normal current density, transverse current density and displacement components have been obtained in the physical domain using a numerical inversion technique. The effects of hall current and nonlocal parameter on resulting quantities have been depicted graphically. Some particular cases have also been figured out from the current work. The results can be very important for the researchers working in the field of magneto-thermoelastic materials, nonlocal thermoelasticity, geophysics etc.

  • The present investigation deals with the thermomechanical interactions in an orthotropic thermoelastic homogeneous body in the context of fractional order theory of thermoelasticity due to time harmonic sources. The application of a time harmonic concentrated and distributed sources has been considered to show the utility of the solution obtained. Assuming the disturbances to be harmonically time dependent, the expressions for displacement components, stress components and temperature change are derived in frequency domain. Numerical inversion technique has been used to determine the results in physical domain. The effect of frequency on various components has been depicted through graphs.
