  • Recently, newly built apartments in Korea are provided various home automation (HA) systems based on information technology(IT) for residents' safer, healthier and more convenient living. However, the residents in these digital apartments are often not able to use the home automation systems effectively because of lack of their IT knowledge, attitude, or education. However, there are few researches have been done to find out the HA systems' real problems with regard to residents' aspects who use those systems everyday. The purpose of this study was to find out residents' current uses, satisfaction level and existing problems of HA systems by residents' POE. The findings of this study will give useful information to digital home construction companies to provide user-friendly digital home services for increasing users' satisfaction. One distinctive apartment equipped with home automation systems located in Seoul was selected for in-depth personal interview. The researcher developed a survey instrument and collected the data from 58 residents in January, 2007 who had been living there for more than a year. The results of the study found that critical problems were existed in several systems and they caused a lot of dissatisfaction from the residents. Also, some residents do not use several systems although they need to use them due to the burden of maintenance fee. Further detail findings and suggestions of this study were discussed.

  • Today, residential facilities is planned and built based on modular architecture. In the modular housing, sizes and locations of spaces like rooms, kinchin, and bathrooms can be changed from-time-to-time. Therefore, current home automation systems based on predesigned and fixed system with wired sensors can not be suitable for the modular housing. As a result, a new concept-based homw automation system is required which is able to adopt varying home environment. Since the change of spaces will change the number of and types of necessary sensors, the home automation system enables to detect automatically and naturally the added or removed different types of wireless sensors and provides home automation services. In this paper, a home automation system is studied and implemented which can adopt varying space environment by detecting automatically added or removed sensors and provide new user interfaces for displaying sensing information.

  • In this paper, a digital home electric overload alarm system based on DSP for smart home automation which can minimize electrical fire damage caused by an home electrical overload was made experimentally. To verify the validity of the home electrical overload alarm technology, an electric overload alarm performance evaluation system which can artificially generate the electrical overloads was designed, developed, and constructed, and the effectiveness of the overload alarm developed by the overload test was verified. In particular, an overload test EMTP model based on EMTP-RV was developed, and simulation and measurement results obtained from the overload test were compared, and the reliability of overload performance verification results was confirmed.

  • This study proposes the method seeking out the user needs for the home automation systems which are one of the compositions of digital home. The findings are as follows. (1) The designing of digital home should be based on the residents' daily life and the their needs for the future house prior to the digital technology, (2) The IT Apartments recently developed in Busan set up the safety and security system and the automatic ventilation system mostly. (3) The residents are more concerned of the safety and security and the comfortable interior environment than convenience and entertainments. (4) The residents have diverse needs for the home automation systems according to their age, residential experience and occupation.

  • In this paper, we describe multifunction switch using micro-controller. Nowadays adaptation of automation technology in home and factory is increased rapidly. Utilization of computer is inevitable for implementation of home and factory automation. Accordingly interface technology between user and computer is needed. We present multifunction switch, which provides interface technology for implementation of automation system. And we can use this independently because micro-controller is loaded in this switch. Consequently we can apply this technology simply to the home and factory automation system using sequence control. Also we can apply this technology to various kinds of automation system independently and complexly.

  • This paper is about the architectures of an extensible and scalable home automation system which is based on instant messaging. The extensibility is the most important feature of the system because there are very diverse appliances at home and they can be added or replaced with other products frequently. For the extensibility, we propose façade architecture for communication, distributed agent architecture for the system, layered architecture for agents, and bridge architecture for wrapping existing facilities. Using these architectures, we reduce the system complexity and get the extensibility to add new products with least cost. Furthermore, we also introduce our prototype system and show that it is extensible.

  • As the number of elderly increased rapidly every year, many elderly still choose to stay independent despite of difficulties and challenges faced in their daily routine. Elderly has desperate needs for support for their living. Internet of Things helps to support and improve elderly's life in many ways to meet the needs and requirements. Home Automation Control (EHAC) is a research based system that support elderly with controlled automation solution that control and operates various home electrical appliances based on the measurement of heart pulse rate and environment temperature. This paper works on EHAC system to evaluate the performance of the system in elderly's daily routine. This paper presented experiments conducted with approach of IoT testing and discussion on analysis of the results.

  • This paper proposes to integrate WAP(Wireless Application Protocol) with Bluetooth to implement a home automation system. One of the most important benefits of the proposed approach is the elimination of the problem of limited distance of Bluetooth as less than 10 meter. With WAP providing a data link between the Internet and a mobile phone and embedded WEB camera through Bluetooth, we can control various home appliances whenever and wherever we want. The hardware and software design issues for implementing such system are discussed and a pilot home automation system is implemented.
