Liquid-liquid extractions by use of microporous hollow fiber modules are fast compared with conventional extraction equipment because of the large surface area per volume. In these modules, the extractant and feed can be contacted at high speed and two flows are completely independent, so there are no problems with loading and channeling. In this paper, it was investigated the extraction selectivities for liquid-liquid extraction of Fe(II) and Ni(II) from dilute aqueous solution into TOA (tri-n-octylamine) and EHPNA (bis(2-ethylhexyle)hydrogenphosphite) as organic extractants by using the hydrophobic hollow fiber module. To determine the rate controlling step for mass transfer in hollow fibers, we also examined the effect of inside and outside flow rates of the hollow fiber module. From these experiments, we identified for the extraction of system with high partition coefficient in hydrophobic hollow fibers, mass transfer in the inside aqueous feed dominated the overall mass transfer, and in this paper, correlation between $K_w$ and $v_t$ was obtained as $K_w{\frac{d}{D}}=6.22\(\frac{d^2v_t}{LD}\)^{1/3}$ On the other hand, for the system with low partition coefficient, the resistance in the inside of hollow fibers was much less than membrane resistance because the extraction was not simple in the micropore. Thus, for systems with high partition coefficients, hydrophobic hollow fibers would be a better choice.
The use of the lung assist device (LAD) would be well suited for acute respiratory failure (ARF) patients, combining the simplicity of mechanical ventilation with the ability of extracoporeal membrane oxygenators (ECMO) to provide temporary relief for the natural lungs. This study's specific attention was focused on the effect of membrane vibration in the LAD. Quantitative experimental measurements were performed to evaluate the performance of the device, and to identify membrane vibration dependence on blood hemolysis. We tried to decide upon excited frequency band of limit hemolysis when blood hemolysis came to through a membrane vibration action. The excited frequency of the module type 5, consisted of 675 hollow fiber membranes, showed the maximum gas transfer rate. We concluded that the maximum oxygen transfer rate seemed to be caused by the occurrence of maximum amplitude and the transfer of vibration to hollow fiber membranes. It was excited up to $25{\pm}5$ Hz at each blood flow rate of module type 5. We found that this frequency became the 2nd mode resonance riequency of the flexible in blood flow. Blood hemolysis was low at the excited frequency of $25{\pm}5$ Hz. Therefore, we decided that limit hemolysis frequency of this LAD was $25{\pm}5$ Hz.
Hollow fiber membrane using CTA polymers were prepared by the phase separation method for the separation and purification of biogas and the hollow fiber gas separation membrane modules with the effective surface area of 0.17 $m^2$ were prepared. The pure gas permeation properties of membrane modules for methane, oxygen and carbon dioxide were measured. The permeance of $CO_2$ and $CH_4$were 0.46 GPU and 18.52 GPU, respectively, therefore, the high $CO_2$/$CH_4$ selectivity of 40.4 was obtained. The separation and purification test for 4 different simulated mixed gases were carried out after the pure gas test and the gas concentration and flux of the permeate at the various stage-cut were measured from the 1 stage, 2 stage, and 3 stage cascade of membrane modules. In the 1 stage test, the concentration of $CH_4$ increased as the increase of the stage-cut, while the $CH_4$ recovery efficiency ratio decreased. In the 2 stage test, the $CH_4$ recovery efficiency ratio increased compared to the 1 stage. The 3 stage test was employed to reduce the loss of $CH_4$ in biogas and the result showed less than 5% of $CH_4$ recovery loss.

As the membrane gas separation technology grows, various models were developed by numerous researchers to describe the separation process. In this work, the counter-current model was compared thoroughly with experimental data. Experimentally, hollow fiber membrane using CA module was prepared for the separation of biogas. The pure gas permeation properties of membrane module for methane, nitrogen, oxygen, and carbon dioxide were measured. The permeance of CO2 and CH4 were 25.82 GPU and 0.65 GPU, respectively. The high CO2/CH4 selectivity of 39.7 was obtained. the separation test for three different simulated mixed gases were carried out after pure gas test, and the gas concentration of the permeate at various stage-cut were measured from CA membrane module. Results showed that the experimental data agreed with the numerical simulation. A mathematical model has implemented in this study for the separation of biogas using a membrane module. The finite difference method (FDM) is applied to calculate the membrane biogas separation behaviors. Futhermore, the counter-current model can be considered as a convenient model for biogas separation process.

In this study transmembrane pressure (TMP) was measured with respect to operational time by applying the sinusoidal flux continuous operation (SFCO) for the hollow fiber membrane. The hollow fiber module which has $100cm^2$ of effective area and $0.45{\mu}m$ nominal pore size was submerged in the activated sludge solution of MLSS 5,000 mg/L. The critical permeate flux was measured as $26.6L/m^2{\cdot}hr$ by the method of continuous flux step change. TMPs of the filtration/relaxation (FR), FR with backwashing (FR/BW) and SFCO modes were measured. The SFCO mode was more effective than FR and FR/BW modes below the critical permeate flux such as 15, 20 and $25L/m^2{\cdot}hr$. However, the FR/BW was confirmed as more effectively fouling controlled mode than SFCO mode above the critical permeate flux.
A theoretical and experimental study made in order to determine the performance of mem-brane contactors in water carbonation is presented. In particular on the basis of experimental results pre-viously obtained it has been derived an expression in which the effect of some parameters as temprera-ture water and CO₂ flow rate CO₂ pressure trans-membrane pressure on the performance of the process is taken into account. The study refers to hollow fiber membrane contactors used for the experimental tests. The main scope has been to verify if by membrane contactors it is possible to reach the same de-gree of water carbonation as by trditional methods (1-5 g/1) and to derive for the module used a cor-relation able to describe the performance of the process at several operating conditions. The high CO₂ removal observed confirms the interesting potentialties of membrane contactors also in gas streams purification.

Rapid backpulsing to reduce membrane fouling of hollow fiber ultrafiltration module (polyacrylonitrile with 50000 l'vlWCO, 1.4 rom OD and 0,9 mm ID) was studied with latex solutions. Values estimated by a theoretical model were compared with the ones obtained from the systems with or without backpulsing, Specific Cake resistance, time consUmt for cake growth, diffusion coefficient, and the rate constants of fnur fouling models; the complete, intermediate. standard blocking and cake filtration were calculated to obtain the theoretical values. High frequency backpulsing gave net increase of fluxes by 40~120%. Fluxes predicted by the model were in good agreement with experimental ones within 14% error bound, The optimum backpulsing strength was acquired at 20% in the ranges of 20~40% strength and the optimum frequcncv was acquired at 2 Hz in the ranges of 0.67~3 Hz.

We prepared composite membrane which was made with polysulfone supported hollow fiber membrane coated with Hyflon AD to eliminate $CO_2$ gas from mixed-gases which were generated in DME manufacturing processes. The performance of module about simulated flaring gas was measured by using manufactured composite membrane. 1-stage evaluation result shows $CO_2$ concentration was below 3% at 1.2 MPa and at Stage cut 0.24 above. In addition $CO_2$ removal rate and $CH_4$ recovery rate was 80% respectively at the same condition. 2-stage evaluation result shows, when the $CO_2$ concentration of product gas was fixed at 5%, recycled $CO_2$ at stage cut 0.074 had the same concentration as the feed gas and the recovery rate of $CH_4$ was 99% at the moment.

In this study, a novel bioreactor system using a submerged hollow fiber membrane module (so called hollow fiber membrane bioreactor, HFMB) was applied to investigate feasibility and biodegradation capacity of the system for the treatment of gaseous toluene. First an abiotic test was conducted to determine the mass transfer coefficient, showing the value was similar to that obtained from a diffuser system using fine bubbles. Second, in the presence of toluene-degrading microorganisms, the HFMB was operated at different inlet toluene loading rates of 50, 100, $500\;g/m^3/hr$, and overall removal efficiencies were maintained in the range of $70{\sim}80%$. In addition, elimination capacities(EC) were increased up to $800\;g/m^3/hr$, which was substantially higher than maximum ECs for toluene reported in the biofiltration literature. Consequently, the HFMB was considered as an alternative method over other conventional VOC-treating technologies.
