  • For investigation of the Korean ciliate fauna, two oxytrichid ciliates, Histriculus histrio (Muller, 1773) and Sterkiella thompsoni Foissner, 1996, were collected from freshwater and brackish waters in South Korea, respectively. These two ciliates are reported for the first time in Korea. Descriptions were based on observations of live and silver stained specimens. Diagnoses of these species are as follows. Histriculus histrio: body is approximately $190{\times}85\;{\mu}m$ in size, almost ellipsoidal in shape, posterior part rather thin and very translucent. Cortical granules are absent. Both marginal rows are almost confluent at the posterior end. Six dorsal kineties are present. Sterkiella thompsoni: body is approximately $140{\times}50\;{\mu}m$ in size. Body margins are usually in parallel. Cortical granules are absent. Invariably, four dorsal kineties are present. Two caudal cirri are located on the dorsal surface. Three ellipsoidal macronuclear nodules are present.

  • The oxytrichid ticks collected from the cultivated field in Yonchon-gun, Misan-myon Kyonggi-do near Seoul, Korea and the moss-covered soils on the old castle walls in Namhansansons, Kwansiu-gun, Kyonggi-do near Seoul, Korea were Identified as Histriculus cavicola (Kahl, 19351 and H. muscorum Kahl, 1932. These two species were redescribed with illustrations. The description was based on the obsenration of living specimens, protarsol impregnated specimens and biometric analysis. These are reported for the first time from Korea and distinguished from the other congeneric species by the following characteristics: the former has 4 macronuclei, 4 micronuclei, 5 transverse cirri and rather inconspicuous marginal cirri, while the latter, 2 macronuclei, 2 micronuclei, 4 transverse cirri and conspicuous marginal cirri, respecitvely.

  • Five hypotrichs inhabiting the representative aquatic and terrestrial habitats of Chindo Island, Strongylidium muscorum, Gonostomum affine, Histriculus cavicola, H. muscorum, Steinia quadrinucleata are discovered from Chindo Island. Of these, two species, Strongylidium muscorum Kahl, 1932 and Steinia quadrinucleata Dragesco and Njine, 1971 are newly recorded from Korea.

  • The present study was performed to elucidate the distribution of protozoans according to the actual conditions of soil pollution around Ulsan industrial complexes, Korea. Samples were collected from the top-soils of 13 localities in eight times during the period from 16 April 1994 to 14 January 1995. As a result of this study, total 11 species of hypotrichous ciliated protozoa were identified and analyzed. These hypotrichs are 6 species of stichotrichine hyporichs ( Keronopsis sp., Pseudourostyla sp., Hoiriiticha syivatica, Hipiosticha multistylata, Hoios-ticha sp. and ParuroleFitus sp.) and 5 species of sporadotrichine hypotrichs (Oxyricha sp., Steinla sp., Histriculus cavicola, Hemisincirra sp. and Gonostomum auiili). Of these 11 species, 4 species (Keronopsis sp., Pseudourostyla sp., Holosticha sp. and Hemisincirra sp.) are reriorted for 1%e first time from Korea. All the sampling localities could be grouped in three zones by the cluster analysis with the abundance and distribution of protozoans. This result is approximately coincide with the ionation by the concentration of heavy metals.

Of these, two species of eonostomum affine (Stein, 1859) and fupfotes muscicofc Kahl, 1932 are newly recorded from Korea. The total seven species are listed and two newly recorded species from Korea are redescribed with illustrations.
