  • Preservation of wooden architecture by means of synthetic resin, is physical and chemical work. Synthetic resins are using for consolidation and restoration of decayed members. Since 1978, synthetic resin became useful preservation of architectural heritage in Korea. The first object was Chimgyeru of Songgwang-temple in Suncheon city. In the 1980s, have begun the care of materials for conservation on the architectural heritage, it was influenced according to authenticity of UNESCO Venice charter's principle, in 1964. In Korea, preservation of wooden architecture by means of synthetic resin that is sing many kinds of epoxies. Among the specific types of epoxies are araldite XN1023, SV427, etc. The use of synthetic resin have merits and demerits in the restoration for architectural heritage. The merit is that it is more smaller change with new members during preservation work. But the demerit is an irreversibility of the epoxy resin. In 1999, 'ICOMOS International Wood Committee' recommend contemporary materials and techniques, should be chosen and used with the greatest caution. And preservation work should reversible, as possible as technically. Therefore, should be data continous for preservation of wooden architecture by synthetic resin. Because data is very important work about a preservation of wooden architecture by synthetic resin. And should be try to think about new materials and techniques instead of synthetic resin, in the long view.

  • The purpose of this study was to search the architectural forms including the residence plan and wooden structure and the measuring unit in building sites named Bang in Gyeong_Ju, the capiatal of Silla dynasty. It includes the following three historic sites: JaMaeJung-ji, the east district of HwangLyong-sa (S1E1) and InWang-dong historic site. Especially, the data from excavating and studying the east district of HwangLyong-sa were very precious and meaningful. The results were as follows: 1) There are individual characteristics at the sites of JaMaeJung-ji, the east district of HwangLyong-sa and InWang-dong. 2) It is assumed that the builldings of the east district of HwangLyong-sa had most various types of plan and various types of wooden structures. 3) There were various types of wooden structures like as symmetrical or asymmetrical style, regular columnar or irregular columnar style and a third purlin location or a forth purlin location. 4) This study also showed there's a high probability that buildings at Bang sites had been built by the Tang dynaty scale. In Silla dynasty, there was similar tendency to BackJe Dynasty in the way that measuring unit changed according to the times.

  • The purpose of this study is to reveal the development process of modern repair systems in the Korean peninsula. Sasungjeon, one of the main buildings of Jangansa temple located in Geumgangsan, was repaired from 1941 to 1944. It was the very last restoration work of historic wooden architecture performed during the Japanese colonial era. This work was delayed multiple times because of insufficient materials and human resources. The Bureau of Education(學務局), which was in charge of repair work, understood that the problems of the repair system and suggested reorganizing the system as a solution. This study examined the repair work of Sasungjeon as a background of the bureau's suggestion and considered this suggestion as an attempt to transform the repair system.

  • The DIABUTSU hotel was built first in Korea and we know that the hotel was built in 1888. However, it has many questions. This study was conducted to uncover the truth. Non-text media in the study is useful to take advantage of the media. However, it is not used in Korea. I prefer that study by Non-text Media. The findings, DIABUTSU hotel was built in 1884. It was Japanese-style two-story wooden building. HORI was hospitality there and many foreigners stayed. Underwood, Appenzeller and Carles were this hotel and they recorded about the hotel in 1885. We know that three story building was the first hotel. But this is wrong in fact. The first hotel is Japanese-style wooden building built in 1884.

  • This study aims to find the conservation and regeneration plan in terms of preserving and utilizing old wooden houses, regenerating existing buildings, and developing idle land for old dwellings located outside the southern gate of Cheongju, Korea. In the preservation and utilization of old houses, three places in the block where wooden houses clustered are created as conservation houses, and are conversed as cafes, workspaces, and homestays along with the preservation of individual houses. In the regeneration of existing buildings, the street landscape was improved through extension and renovation, new construction after demolition, and exterior renovation for one or two-story buildings facing the roadside. In the development of idle land, it reflects the layout method and open yard space corresponding to the path and orientation of the old house, and the mass was varied and segmented to resolve the medium scale. Accordingly, considering the context, landscape, and environmental aspects of the historical downtown, the development of old dwellings in downtown should shift from a uniform high-rise apartment project-oriented approach to a gradual and continuous regeneration direction.

  • We have focused on the building appearance according to the change of conservation policy and urban fabric in Bukchon, Seoul. The Urban Hanok, urban traditional housing type, had been evolved in modern contort from 1920's to 1960's, that is to say, many buildings(Urban Hanok) in Bukchon area has built up with a lot and road at the same time. But the change of conservation policy has an effect on the urban fabric and building(wooden structure, RC and brick building). Thus many types of building in Bukchon has undergone a various change. The purpose of this paper is to define a change factor of Bukchon buildings. Thus we need to pay attention to policy and urban fabric. We reached the result as follows. First, the change of architecture regulations according to the several policies(an aesthetic area, an altitude area for sky line restriction and so on) brought into building deformation and eventually the historic scenery of Bukchon has been spoiled. Second, the change of policy had an effect on the change of roads and lots. Buildings on a widen road and a united lot was built newly. But new buildings built up with a concrete or brick structure was not in harmony with the historic scenery of Bukchon area. Third, a development method of a large lot with lack prudence(disregarded a scale and size of lot) did damage to Urban hanok and urban fabric. With the understanding on the relationship of buildings, a urban fabric and a policy in Bukchon, we can define the identity and correspond with the urgent request for a the conservation of historic urban scenery In addition we can suggest the policy and the design guidelines for the reservation and rehabilitation for Bukchon, Seoul.

  • This study is to investigate the old buildings that have been built more than 50 years ago, targeting the areas of Seongan and Jungang-dong, the historic urban area of Cheongju. Their types and distribution characteristics are as follows. 1) First, the old buildings existing in downtown Cheongju account for 21.4% of 1,070 out of the total 5,000 buildings. Among them, wooden buildings before the 1950s accounted for 60% of them, resulting in severe aging. 2) Second, by use, 728 detached houses and 276 neighborhood living facilities account for 93.8% of the total, with 16 offices and 12 religious facilities. By structure, there are wood 65%, masonry 30%, and reinforced concrete 5% (54 buildings). By number of floors, the first floor 90%, the second floor 7.3%, and the third floor or higher 2.7% (30 buildings). The roof material is 51.6% of earthenware, followed by slate, cement, and slab. 3) Third, the old buildings are scattered all over the streets, and are concentrated in Namju-dong, Nammun-ro 1-ga-dong, Seoun-dong, and Sudong at the foot of Uamsan Mountain, a former refugee village. Also old buildings are distributed in Seoun-dong and Seokgyo-dong where hanok(korean traditional houses) are concentrated, in Namju and Nammunro 1 ga-dong blocks connected by alleys, and in cul-de-sac all over the place.

  • A one-story, wooden-frame, intermediate-bay model with Dou-Gon designed according to the Building Standards of the Song Dynasty (A.D.960-1279), was tested on a unidirectional shaking table. The main objectives of this experimental study were to investigate the seismic performance of Chinese historic wooden structure under various base input intensities. El Centro wave (N-S), Taft wave and Lanzhou wave were selected as input excitations. 27 seismic geophones were instrumented to measure the real-time displacement, velocity and acceleration respectively. Dynamic characteristics, failure mode and hysteretic energy dissipation performance of the model are analyzed. Test results indicate that the nature period and damping ratio of the model increase with the increasing magnitude of earthquake excitation. The nature period of the model is within 0.5~0.6 s, the damping ratio is 3~4%. The maximum acceleration dynamic magnification factor is less than 1 and decreases as the input seismic power increases. The frictional slippage of Dou-Gon layers (corbel brackets) between beams and plates dissipates a certain amount of seismic energy, and so does the slippage between posts and plinths. The mortise-tenon joint of the timber frame dissipates most of the seismic energy. Therefore, it plays a significant part in shock absorption and isolation.

  • In this thesis, the Development of Station Buildigs Design during last a hundred years in Korea is analyzed. From the early time to today, several posts of Office of Korean National Railroads have controlled the Station Buildings Design by Standard Drawings. Sometimes, private architects joined in designing the Stations, that have the value as historic architecture. Under the Japanese imperialistic rule, Japanese Officer designed all of the stations ; that can be classified 1) wooden compromise style, 2) renaissance style, 3) northern European house style, 4) general station by standard drawing, 5) Korean house style. 6) modernism style. Especially, Korean house style was not planned to commemorate the old Korean Architecture, but to beguile the Japanese tourists' monotony of the journey in Korea. After the Independence, the Station Buildings are grouped into 1) international style, 2) modernism style with traditional details, 3) Station Complex Buildings. In the future, design of the Railroad Station Building needs to be diversified to satisfy tourists' emotion.
