  • This paper proposes a shot change detection algorithm by using frame segmentation and the object changes among moving blocks. In order to detect the rapid moving changes of objects between two consecutive frames, the moving blocks on the diagonal are defined, and their histograms are calculated. When a block of the current frame is compared to the moving blocks of the next frame, the block histograms are used and the threshold of a shot change detection is automatically adjusted by Otsu's threshold method. The proposed algorithm was tested for the various types of color or gray videos such as films, dramas, animations, and video tapes in National Archives of Korea. The experimental results showed that the proposed algorithm could enhance the detection rate when compared to the studied methods that use brightness, histogram, or segmentation.

  • We propose a new content-based image retrieval using a representative color histogram and directional pattern histogram that is adaptive to the classification characteristics of the image blocks. In the proposed method the color and pattern feature vectors are extracted according to the characteristics o: the block classification after dividing the image into blocks with a fixed size. First, the divided blocks are classified as either luminance or color blocks depending on the saturation of the block. Thereafter, the color feature vectors are extracted by calculating histograms of the block average luminance co-occurrence for the luminance block and the block average colors for the color blocks. In addition, block directional pattern feature vectors are extracted by calculating histograms after performing the directional gradient classification of the luminance. Experimental results show that the proposed method can outperform the conventional methods as regards the precision and the size of the feature vector dimension.

  • As smart environment is spread out in our living environments, the needs of an approach related to Human Computer Interaction(HCI) is increases. One of them is head pose estimation. it related to gaze direction estimation, since head has a close relationship to eyes by the body structure. It's a key factor in identifying person's intention or the target of interest, hence it is an essential research in HCI. In this paper, we propose an approach for head pose estimation with pre-defined several directions by random forest classifier. We use canny edge detector to extract feature of the different facial image which is obtained between input image and averaged frontal facial image for extraction of rotation information of input image. From that, we obtain the binary edge image, and make two accumulated histograms which are obtained by counting the number of pixel which has non-zero value along each of the axes. This two accumulated histograms are used to feature of the facial image. We use CAS-PEAL-R1 Dataset for training and testing to random forest classifier, and obtained 80.6% accuracy.

  • A new tongue examination model by using color analysis according to the taste division of tongue. The proposed system consists of a tongue image acquisition in a predefined template, taste region segmentation, color distribution analysis and abnormality decision of tongue by color analysis using Hue-Saturation histograms and the part of a mobile application service. We divided 4 basic taste(bitter, sweet, salty and sour) regions and performed color distribution analysis targeting each region under HSI(Hue Saturation Intensity) color model. To minimize the influence of illumination, the histograms of H and S components only except U are utilized. Using the analyzed results, the abnormality is discriminated by the criteria of the histogram range of normal tongues. Finally, a self tongue diagnosis system which can be used anytime and anywhere on mobile environment.

  • Image enhancement algorithm aims to improve the visual quality of low contrast image through eliminating the noise and blurring, increasing contrast, and raising detail. This paper proposes adaptive dynamic range linear stretching(ADRLS) algorithm based on advantages of existing methods. ADRLS method is focused on generating sub-histograms of the majority through partitioning the histogram of input image and applying adaptive scale factor. Generated sub-histograms are finally applied by linear stretching(LS) algorithm. In order to validate proposed method, it is compared with LS and histogram equalization(HE) algorithm generally used. As the result, the proposed method show to improve contrast of input image and to preserve distinct characteristics of histogram by controlling excessive change of brightness.

  • Content-based image retrieval is the research of images from database, that are visually similar to given image examples. Gabor functions and Gabor filters are regarded as excellent methods for feature extraction and texture segmentation. However, they have a disadvantage not to perform well in case of a rotated image because of its direction-oriented filter. This paper proposes a method of extracting local texture features from blocks with central interest points detected in an image and a rotation invariant Gabor wavelet filter. We also propose a method of comparing pattern histograms of features classified by VQ (Vector Quantization) among images.

  • The accuracy of inflow into tunnel estimates depends largely on how well permeability is characterized. But, the average of the packer test results will always underestimate the upper end of the permeability range, and therefore underestimate the inflow. Taking an average of the test results always underestimates inflow because the average permeability does not really exist. The distribution of packer-test data may not accurately reflect permeability, however, due to the limits of the test method and the luck of the field investigation. These discrepancies may be overcome by using Raymer(2001)'s log-normal plots and Heuer(1995)'s histograms of the data to develop a permeability model that will be used in lieu of the data to calculate inflow. Furthermore, the influence on the inflow is examined by the geological characteristics based upon the hundred times of packer test OO tunnel project.

  • In this paper, we propose a framework that automatically suggests emotion using emotion analysis method based on facial expression change. We use Microsoft's Emotion API to calculate and analyze emotion values in facial expressions to recognize emotions that change over time. In this step, we use standard deviations based on peak analysis to measure and classify emotional changes. The difference between the classified emotion and the normal emotion is calculated, and the difference is used to recognize the emotion abnormality. We match user's emotions to relatively relaxed emotions using histograms and emotional meshes. As a result, we provide relaxed emotions to users through images. The proposed framework helps users to recognize emotional changes easily and to train their emotions through emotional relaxation.

  • The purpose of this study is to estimate evapotranspiration and its spatial distribution using NOAA-AVHRR data. Evapotranspiration phenomena are exceedingly complex. But, factors which control evapotranspiration can be considered that these are reflected by conditions of the vegetation. To evaluate the vegetation condition as a fixed quantity, the NDVI(Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) calculated from NOAA data is utilized. In this study, land cover classification of the Korean peninsula using property of NDVI is performed. Also, from the relationship between evapotranspiration and NDVI histograms, evapotranspiration and its distribution of the Han River basin are estimated.
